This ...is fun:) I joined a group where a film is picked on the 2nd Friday of each month, and one must watch it and give our review after. This month we each get to pick the film and another, from the group, has to watch the film. This was started by MOCK and The Armchair Squid and I saw this on Cherdo, By the Flipside's blog. This is a blog hop so I hope some can join in on the fun:)
I had a hard time in choosing which film to pick as I love so many. I love musicals and thought of picking one but my mind kept going back to this film by the great Alfred Hitchcock. I am not going to give too much away because, if anyone has not seen this film, then you must see it!
Stewart Granger plays the hero who is engaged to the beautiful Ruth Roman (she was on the Andrea Doria) but he has a slight problem....He is still married to his skanky wife played by the future Mrs. Tate from Bewitched. Robert Walker plays a man Stewart Granger meets on the train, and he does a superb performance! He should have won an Oscar for this role. No one knows who he is nowadays but back then, Robert Walker was known as the kindly boy next door. He was a role model of sweet, good-natured innocence- remember this when you watch the film.
I won't get into the moments of this film because I would give key parts away so you must watch it and then I will talk about it at a later date. Oh and Marion Lorne, the sweet Aunt Clara from Bewitched, gives a great nutty performance in this film as well.

A fine choice! I love Hitchcock and this one contains so many of his classic elements. I am also a tennis fan and unlike, say, baseball, there aren't a lot of movies to claim on behalf of tennis. But Strangers on a Train always makes the list.

DeleteI've never seen this one--although wasn't "Throw Momma from the Train" based on it? I should have seen this one INSTEAD of seeing that!

DeleteThis movie is iconic. I think its evergreen appeal may have something to do with the plethora of people who think about killing their spouses. Heh heh. ;)

DeleteNice review. I'm glad you liked this film. It's one of my favorites. I'm still a bit bothered by the spoof/remake "Throw Mama from the Train",but I guess that's my fault for watching it. What can I say, I was young.

DeleteI don't know if I've ever sat down to watch this one, but I do know all about it. Must remember to get through all of Hitchcock's films (although maybe not Family Plot).

DeleteI've seen parts of this movie and the parts I've seen are very intense. I had a crush on Robert Walker when I was a kid watching his old movies. My favorite was the one with the statue that came alive.

DeleteI've heard so much about this movie, yet I still haven't seen it. I have seen Throw Momma From The Train, and other spoofs, but nothing compares with the original Hitchcock classic. Farley Grainger appeared on One Life To Live, or one of the other ABC soaps in the 70's, and I remember my mom telling me how great he was in the

DeleteHitchcock is one of those filmmakers I got a headstart on when I was young, but have never gotten around to further exploring. Last one I caught was in college (North by Northwest).

It is great and I have so many favourite scenes-When Bruno meets Granger's wife (the glasses shot is superb. Bruno with the little boy and the balloon. Bruno in the tennis audience and that last scene with the carousel is amazing. You know that old man really did crawl under that fast moving carousel.
