My Film Choice is "What's Up Doc"
Some of you guessed last week's trivia film right! Congrats to you:) This means you have seen this film and what a film!! I love it!! The Mock and Armchair Squid have created a film society where, each month, we review a film. This is mine.
The answers to my questions are 1. Barbra Streisand who acts, sings and directs. 2. Great Screwball Comedy and 3. Introduces Madeline Kahn
This film came out in 1972, directed by Peter Bogdanovich and starring Ryan O'Neal, Barbra Streisand, Madeline Kahn (in her first film role) and great character actors, Kenneth Mars, Austin Pendleton, Liam Dunn, Mabel Albertson and the list goes on.
Bogdanovich is a lover of old Hollywood, the Silents, screwball classics and anything dealing with film. This film pays homage to the great screwball comedies of the 1930's but also has classic moments taken from the silent era especially when viewing the great chase scene near the end of the film.
It begins with a bag, no I am not talking about an old lady, but an actual bag-4 bags to be exact which are all the same but carry something completely different on the inside. One carries clothing, The other priceless jewels, the 3rd Top Secret documents and the 4th Howard Bannister's Igneous Rock formations. Howard is engaged to Eunice Burns played to the hilt by the brilliant Madeline Kahn but is pursued by Barbra Streisand who brings trouble in all forms. It was written by Buck Henry, David Newman and Robert Benton who should have received Oscars for their Screenplay. This film is listed in the 100 best all time best comedies from the American Film Institute (AFI).
I first saw this film when I was maybe 10 years old and would watch it every chance I could get. There are so many great scenes from the "Burnsie" scene, the Hotel room scene, the "charm" scene between Sorrel Brooke and Mabel Albertson" and the huge car chase scene in which this is the first time that stunt men got film credit and rightly so. In fact, the one guy in the back seat of the convertible was knocked out and could not remember doing the scene even years later.
My favourite scene "Dorilla St"-Poor Eunice is told that the party has been changed to this address. I remember my daddy laughing so hard when she went up those rickety steps that tears were in his eyes. So I hope some of you will give this film a look especially if you need a good laugh. Oh and because of this film, Mel Brooks hired Madeline Kahn and Liam Dunn for his film "Blazing Saddles"

It was a funny movie, my goodness look how young Madeline looks. Never would have guessed though.
ReplyDeleteSandy at Bridge and Beyond Announcing a Contest
She is young there and glad you saw it
DeleteOophs forgot, send me your email, maybe I can better illustrate how to do the signature in an email for you. Also tell me what you'd like your signature to say...your name, your blog name or both or something else?
ReplyDeleteOK I will do this and hopefully I will get it:)
DeleteHi, BB! Mrs. Shady #1 loved Barbra Streisand, her music and her movies, and we saw What's Up, Doc? upon its release in 1972. We also saw Barbra's previous picture The Owl and the Pussycat in 1970, and most of her other films including Funny Girl, The Way We Were, For Pete's Sake, Funny Lady, A Star is Born, The Main Event, Yentl and The Prince of Tides. We had both been wowed by director Peter Bogdanovich after seeing The Last Picture Show in 1971. Buck Henry is one of my favorite screenplay writers. In a theater at college, I binge watched The Graduate 5 times in a single day (and evening) and took extensive notes needed to compose an essay about the Mike Nichols film for a Mass Media class.
ReplyDeleteIt was fun playing this guessing game with you, Birgit, and I was tickled to realize that I had come up with the answer you were looking for. Have a great weekend, dear friend!
You did! I have seen all of her films vene yawntl except for "For Pete's Sake." Buck Henry is a class all his own and people have no clue who he is but he is big:) You must know The Graduate inside and out and can teach us a thing or 2 about this film. Always a pleasure to read your words
DeleteOK. So now I add this to my list of movies to see and books to read. I'm going to have to live another 50 years!
ReplyDeleteWell this film isn't long so you should take a look at this one
DeleteI have never seen this one- nor do I remember ever hearing of it. But- this post made me want to watch it. It sounds great and I can always use a good laugh. :)
ReplyDelete~Jess
Oh it is so funny! Well I think it is since comedy is subjective but I laugh and laugh
DeleteI remember seeing this movie, but it was long enough ago that I don't recall much of it.
ReplyDeleteTime to find it and watch it:)
DeleteNever even heard of this one before, that doesn't happen too often at my sea. Never knew about the first time stunt men got film credit either, full of new info today haha
ReplyDeleteOh this is a gem!! The list of sayings in this film and antics...just make me laugh now
DeleteI really liked this movie although I haven't seen it for many years. I loved Madeline Kahn in Blazing Saddles - which shows my puerile sense of humour!
ReplyDeleteOh gosh yes! She is classic and briiliant. Time to dust this film off and see it again
DeleteMadeline Kahn is a great comedic actress, and I've loved everything of hers! (Esp "Blazing Saddles" and "Young Frankenstein") I remember "What's Up Doc" dimly from my childhood, and I have a lot of respect for Barbra. She's one talented lady!
ReplyDeleteShe was GREAT in Young Frankenstein (my favorite movie).
Delete"Taffeta, darling!"
I loved her in Young Frankenstein..."The Hair, the hair!" Her shashay to the bed after her hair went all Elsa Lanchester. Now is time to see her in "What's Up Doc" again
DeleteSince I guessed "Blazing Saddles," I obviously didn't know the answer. This makes more sense. I really thought the part about a bar fight spilling over into a Hollywood soundstage was a stretch. But, it was the best I had.
ReplyDeleteYup love that scene in "Blazing Saddles." Have you seen "What's Up Doc?" If not, you must take a gander at it-I place it very, very high on my comedy list
DeleteClueless with the guessing from last week and now I know why, I never saw the movie (but it does sound cute, will have to catch it sometime)
ReplyDeletebetty
Oh yes you will have to. It is so funny, not only the visual gags but the writing
DeleteI don't think I've seen this one! Adding it to my list.
ReplyDeleteThis is a must see:)
DeleteDon't think I remembered this film enough to pass the quiz, but have loved anything with Barbara Streisand in the past. It would be fun to see again!
ReplyDeleteOh it is so funny and I think you will love it
DeleteDefinitely one to revisit! Thanks for the tip, I'm going to see if I can find it on Netflix right now.
ReplyDeleteOh I hope you can find it and have a fun night watching this gem
DeleteI thought I had seen all of Barbara Streisand movies back then. Glad to know I haven't. I'll go stick it on my Netflix queue right now.
ReplyDeleteOh I hope you enjoy this film
DeleteOh dear, I haven't seen this one either. Sounds like loads of fun, though!
ReplyDeleteIt is tons of fun and I hope you watch it
DeleteYou have all certainly been adding to my must-watch list.
DeleteI saw this movie a long time ago and it was fun.
ReplyDeleteBut I would see any movie with Madeline Kahn in it.
cheers, parsnip
Perfect film to see again:) She is priceless in it
DeleteIt's been years since I saw it. And it was before I saw Bringing Up Baby, so I didn't quite get the whole screwball comedy thing. Yet. Now I do. But I did enjoy it when I saw it.
ReplyDeleteI love this film, well no kidding. I can watch it over and over again
DeleteOh - how delightful to see your choice, Birgit! I remember seeing this when I was about 15! I really must watch it now! My most memorable actor in this is Barbara Streisand - and I remember becoming obsessed with her for a short time. Soon after, I saw "A star is born" ..hmmm. :D I am going to see how I can get hold of this now. Best part is - the phrase "what's up doc" is a staple in our home through the generations.
ReplyDeleteI think it is time to see this film again
DeleteLoved that film. Thanks for the reminder of it so I can see about seeing it again. Classic Streisand. She is classy, I mean one of the most brilliant voices in entertainment but can be so zany.
ReplyDeleteGreat voice and liked her earlier film career than the more recent one
DeleteI saw this film once when I was younger, but I forgot. It's probably best to watch it again since I don't really remeber it. It's sounds wonderful. Thanks for sharing it.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny and hope you watch it
DeleteI love that movie. A movie we saw recently with Ryan and Tatum O'Neal was paper moon. It was from the 70's too. I love that old picture.
ReplyDeleteThat is another great movie that I love as well
DeleteI LOVED this movie so much, that I bought the book too! I was so happy seeing more photos of Ryan O'Neal. I had forgotten that this was Madeline Kahn's first movie. She's another hugely talented actress who died too young. I'll have to see if it's on NetFlix, as I'd really like to see it again. Great pic, Birgit!
ReplyDeleteJulie
All of the people seemed to be having a genuine fun time. I like to see this film and how they all were
DeleteThis is beautifull, i Love the old films too, thanks for your visit on my Blog, yes the stam is Romy Schneider, this us the Link, were i have by it Hope i can help you http://www.stempelbar.de/496512/stempelbar-stempelgummi-romy-Schneider, have a nice Day, wish Bettina
ReplyDeleteI shall look this up! Thanks
DeleteI saw this when it came out and loved it, but about the only thing I remember is Barbara's 'What's Up, Doc':)
ReplyDeleteThis film is a classic with so many great lines and scenes
DeleteI've never seen this, or even heard of it until now, but I loved Madeline Kahn. Such a funny, funny lady. So was Ryan O'Neal at the top of his acting game in this one? Like he was in Tough Guys Don't Dance?
ReplyDeleteI don't know this film he was in but he is great in this film. They are all hilarious and i bet you will love it. Hope you see it
DeleteI was sad to see it wasn't available on Netflix streaming... but it IS available on Amazon Prime, so I added it to my to-watch list. :)
DeleteInteresting!! I've never heard of this one, but I love Barbara Streisand!!
ReplyDeleteCheck it out-it is great
DeleteI love all the actors in this...so I really need to see it!!!!
ReplyDeleteOh gosh you must! This is brilliant
DeleteI'd forgotten this film and how much I laughed during it. All I have to do is see Madeline Khan's face and I crack up. She's wonderful.
ReplyDeleteShe is priceless in this film and she got the part not even by an audition but by just talking to the director
DeleteI haven't seen this film before, but the premise makes it sound like a fun one to watch.
ReplyDeleteIt is fun and it brings to mind the screwball 30's and the classic silent comedies. In the opening scene when you see Barbra Streisand walk across the streets that is really her who almost gets hit twice by vehicles
DeleteIt's so sad Madeline Kahn is no longer with us. But I haven't seen this one! I saw The Main Event with Barbra Streisand and Ryan O'Neal when I was a kid. My grandmother took me to the movies to see it. I loved it but I think at that age, I was just fascinated with any movie!
ReplyDeleteThis was a follow up to their pairing of this film. I saw The Main Event but it is not as funny as this one. They made a good team
DeleteJust stopped by to say hey and that I'm thinking of you. Hugs.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much:)
DeleteYou're a whiz with the old-time classics, Birgit.
ReplyDeleteNow I'm remembering that I saw the Main Event at a drive-inn with my family. It was always fun going to those, and it usually meant I loved the movie - no matter the movie. In this case, I do remember enjoying the theme song.
I saw The Main Event in the theatre when it came out and it's good just not as good as What's Up Doc. You have to see this film
Deleteoops, drive-inn made sense somehow. But it's drive-in. Doh. =)
ReplyDeleteI like Drive-inn better:)
DeleteI've never seen this film. I really need to watch more old movies and classics. There's so many I haven't seen that I want to see.
ReplyDeleteOh I hope you can see this-It is a true gem
DeleteThe old Barbara Streisand was my favorite. The new, politically correct diva - not so much. No one, however, can deny that talent. What a voice.
ReplyDeleteDang it, Birgit...now I have to watch The Way We Were again!
I'm with you about the diva Streisand. I like her older self much better. I can't get through Yentl without yawning so I call it Yawntl. She has a great voice. The one scene where she is laying on the piano in "What's Up Doc" and starts to sing was not dubbed-she sang right then and there-great voice
DeleteGood morning, Birgit. Hope you have a pleasant, productive day:)
ReplyDeleteThank you! Same for you:)
DeleteThe Mock and Armchair Squid film society is a great idea. I've definitely got it on my bucket to do list. I can see why you enjoyed Whats Up Doc so much, Eunice and Howard are perfect for each other.
ReplyDeleteOh you should join. It's Bernsie and Howard that are a match that is the one who is not his wife and not his fiance. The one who is not his wife but his fiance is Eunice who ends up being with Austin Pendleton's character
DeleteHappy Wednesday, Birgit:)
ReplyDeleteHow have I not seen this movie??? I LOVE MADELINE KAHN (yes, I did need to shout that. That's how strongly I feel about it :) ) I need to watch this movie!!
ReplyDeleteYes you do! She is great in this and this part is what got her noticed by Mel Brooks. You will have to tell me what you think after you see this film
DeleteHave a good evening, Birgit:)
ReplyDeletehave a great weekend and a great friday
DeleteQuite a pedigree on this film! I must hunt it down!
ReplyDeleteHope you're enjoying your weekend to the max.
ReplyDeleteI keep popping back in for a new post, but decided to leave another comment anyway. Hope you're doing well, we're having a dreary Sunday it seems...
ReplyDeleteSandy at Bridge and Beyond
I saw this years ago. I can't even remember when. I may have to let it up again.
ReplyDeleteOh my! Seems like a lifetime ago that i watched this movie. Kahn looks like a child! Have to watch it again.
ReplyDeletehugs, Asha
