Mock Squid Soup Film Society-Ferris Bueller

This month we pick a film from the ever growing list that the others from the film society have already watched. This society is spearheaded by The Armchair Squid. Head on over to see what the others have picked and why not join? Come on..you know you want to:)

The film I chose to review is .....

FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF-1986

I love this film and rewatched it for this series because it was fun to watch. It just yells 1980's which I also love.  The plot is about a cool high school student who wakes one morning to a beautiful day and realizes that he just doesn't want to spend that day in school. He fakes his illness which his clueless parents believe completely because, in their eyes, he can do no wrong. His older sister knows better and is trying her best to catch him playing hooky... so is his principal. His girlfriend and his best friend join him in the day of fun. During the day you get to know the characters and even relate to them although less to Ferris and more with his best friend who is a hypochondriac with daddy issues.

The acting is quite good especially from Matthew Broderick playing Ferris and I love the cameo of
Frank Zappa as the car attendant who, with his friend, take the expensive car out for a joyride.

The music is great, so many great come from this movie(John Hughes wrote it in 6 days), great scenes (monotone teacher saying Bueller....Bueller...we all had a teacher like that) and I do love that scene when Ferris is on the float and inspires the city to sing and dance to Twist and Shout. By the way, the construction worker and window washer were just doing their jobs and decided to join in so John Hughes filmed them. Overall a fun film worth getting to know especially when his sister meets up with the principal...let's just say he gets a kick out of her. OK just watch the scene...it isn't long.

    1. Cool eh? Apparently, many in that scene were just people who decided to dance and Hughes kept them in.

  3. I love just about every movie Matthew Broderick ever made starting from Ladyhawk. He's such a cutie! He's perfect in this movie, like all the others. Thanks for featuring it! :)

    1. Yes, I remember him being interviewed and saying he enjoyed doing this small bit. I tried to look it up now to reconfirmed but couldn't find it. Still I do recall him discussing the movie and John Hughes being happy that he was in it.

    1. That is cool. Funny how a film or music or a book can change ones' life. That scene had many people who were just on the street dancing because of the music...how great is that!?

  16. When I'm stuck calling out roll, I will mutter Bueller...Bueller just for my own giggles.

I bought my brother a T-shirt with just the description of the movie once. One of his friends played in a band called Save Ferris. (They had some marginal success. Had a couple songs on the radio and appeared in another teen movie--10 Things I Hate About You.)

  17. I haven't seen this even though I always think it sounds good. I need to make an extra effort now. I think John could even be persuaded to watch it if he knew it involved Frank Zappa.

I enjoyed Ferris but I wasn't as wild about it as most folks were. It really was an iconic hit.

  19. John Hughes really knew how to write a film geared toward the teenager. Let's just say he was brilliantly writing YA before it was cool. The thing that I love, though, is that his movies stand the test of time because I STILL love this movie. I still think it's hilarious. Just reading this review makes me want to watch it again.

    1. You are so right that his movies don't really age at all. Except for the style that say '80's they are all great actually. Glad you liked my review

  20. And even better - Deadpool parodied it at the end of his film...

  23. Oh my gosh! I love so many 80s films and this one was no exception! It was just a fun movie to watch and wish you could be a participate in. Kinda like Breakfast Club. Good innocent fun. Totally far-fetched but most 80s films were and I think that's why I loved them so much! Great pick!

  24. Birgit, the 80s was not only a decade of good music, but good movies, too. I remember this movie and I believe it's available on Netflix. I may have to re-watch it. Thanks for the reminder!

  25. I love this movie. It never gets old. I think my favorite scene is Abe Froman the Sausage King of Chicago haha. Also the Art Institute scene with The Smith's song. So good.

  28. I remember the car, Ferrari I think. I simply couldn't believe my eyes when that beautiful machine got thrashed the way it did - what a waste. I nearly cried but Hollywood being what it is, it was obviously switched.

  29. Yes, I love this one too, it never fails to make me happy.
