Sorry for being late...I am sicker than a dog and have been off work all this week. Throat, lung, nose and ear infection has clobbered me. I'm making this short and sweet and then back to the couch I go with my tablet. Head on over to Wandering Through The Shelves to see what the others have picked. You can always join in as well...every Thursday a topic has been chosen and you pick 3 films that work with that topic. Here are my 3.....
1. THE BIG STORE-1942
This is a Marx Brothers film...need I say more? Yes, it takes place in a store where an evil man wants to kill the owners of the store but the grand Dame Margaret Dumont doesn't trust this evil doer and hires an inept P.I., played by Groucho Marx to find out what is going on. The antics are great as well as Harpo's playing of the harp. If you love the Marx Brothers, you'll love this.
2. IN THE GOOD OLD SUMMERTIME-1949
This is a musical remake of the film "Shop Around The Corner" starring Judy Garland and Van Johnson. She is hired in a music store when she is able to sell an instrument at a higher price than what it was labeled as. She and the main seller, played by Johnson, dislike each other and are always at odds but, unbeknownst to them, are secret pen pals who love each other. You know how it ends....it is an MGM musical after all but it is sweet and it is nice to see Buster Keaten in a very small role. This was the first role of Liza Minnelli, playing the daughter of Judy and Van at the very end of the film.
3. BAD SANTA-2003
Ok, this is a Christmas film but a foul mouthed one that actually has some wholesome ideas in it....if you look hard enough:) if you don't like debauchery, bad language and bad taste, then don't watch this, me....I love it! Yes, I hold my head up high. It stars Billy Bob Thornton as a derelict, alcoholic, foul-mouthed, sex obsessed sad sack who works with a midget/dwarf playing Santa and his merry elf for department stores during the holidays. When they know enough money has been collected by the store, they break in and, due to Santa's nimble fingers, crack the safe and make off the with money. The latest store sees Thornton's Santa really lose all his self-respect, while romancing a woman with a Santa fetish and helping out a fat, sad kid deal with bullies while his dad is in prison, mom is dead and grandma, played by Cloris Leachman, is in dementia land. Whew...long sentence...anyway this is very funny in my book and this is the last film that stars John Ritter before he died. He and Billy Bob Thornton were great friends and often appeared in movies together.
What would be your 3 picks? Do you like the trailers or find it too long and prefer to just see the posters?
One that I would select would be "The Devil And Miss Jones" (not "The Devil In Miss Jones") with Jean Arthur, Charles Coburn, Bob Cummings, and a host of other actors and actresses. Coburn owns a department store and gets wind that the workers are unhappy and trying to form a union, so he decides to go undercover (since nobody at the store has ever seen him) and find out the complaints and to see if he can do anything to forestall the unionizers (led by Bob Cummings). It's a very funny movie and has some wonderful actors. Here are the opening credits:
ReplyDeletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTCbyG1dPBk
Hahahaaa...yes not the porn version:) I haven't seen that film in such a long time thati need to rewatch it. It's a great film but many films with Jean Arthur are.
DeleteBad Santa!!! So much yes!
ReplyDeleteSorry you're so sick! Feel better real soon!
ReplyDeleteNice choices. I'm not a huge Marx Bros. fan, I usually like their films but have never understood the wild devotion of their more ardent fans. This is a perfect fit for the week and the boys antics are amusing.
While my favorite version of the story is The Shop Around the Corner Judy, Spring Byington and Buster Keaton make this one worth the time. While she wasn't wild about the script this is apparently the last time that a film starring Judy went smoothly and finished both on time and under budget. She's in great voice, her version of Meet Me Tonight in Dreamland is just meltingly beautiful.
I've avoided Bad Santa, it just looks so stupid but it's a fun inventive choice.
My three reach back a bit but they all came to me so easily this week.
Who’s Minding the Store? (1963)-Dog walker Norman (Jerry Lewis) loves the beautiful Barbara (Jill St. John) but Barbara’s from money, a fact Norman is unaware of. Her family owns a highly successful department store and her mother, Mrs. Tuttle (Agnes Moorehead) is determined to break them up. Norman goes to work in the store and tries to prove himself while Mrs. Tuttle’s minion, Mr. Quimby (Ray Walston) gives him ever more humiliating tasks. Typical Lewis comedy is a bit sweeter than usual and has a great cast.
The Devil and Miss Jones (1941)-Annoyed to hear workers at one of his stores are trying to form a union the world's richest man John P. Merrick (Charles Coburn) decides to check it out for himself. Going incognito he gets a job there on the hunt for what he sees as troublemakers but discovers instead that the employee’s grips are legitimate when he befriends Miss Mary Jones (Jean Arthur), another worker at the store. In time Merrick ends up carrying the flag for the workers to be treated decently…and maybe has found a love of his own. Played for laughs but with an underlying serious social tone.
Employees Entrance (1933)-Harsh pre-code tells the story of a soulless bastard (Warren William) and what he does as he ruthlessly oversees the running of a large department store during the depression. He thinks nothing of trading work for sexual favors, throwing people out of work who displease him, demeaning his employees sometimes to the point of suicide. A candid if unpleasant portrait of a contemptible man all the more vivid because of being produced just before the Hays Office would have made its production unthinkable.
Thank you...I am hoping to turn the corner soon. Will Ferrell movies are stupid, Bad Santa is a bit better than stupid actually but it is rude. I am a Marx Brothers fan but they are zany and you either love 'em or not. I just think Judy is the best and she always has a haunting sadness in her voice. I forgot about the Jerry Lewis film...that's a good one! I haven't seen The Devil and Miss Jones in so long but it is a brilliant choice. I haven't even heard f the last one but I'm going to find it on you tube and watch it as I don't think I can find it anywhere else. Thanks for showcasing this early film.
DeleteBad Santa was so twisted.
ReplyDeleteSorry the infection has taken over. Someone perform a healing, stat!
It is twisted and I love it. I'm on strong antibiotics and my spouse, Hitler, um I mean my loved one is making sure I don't talk at all.
DeleteNot the best Marx Brothers movie but still fun.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, not their best...Duck Soup holds that title but I love them at the Opera as well.
DeleteCareer Opportunities
ReplyDeleteGlengarry Glen Ross
Empire Records
Anyway, hope you get better soon.
I have seen Empire Records around a lot today. I don't know Career Opportunities but will look this up but know Glengarry and found it good but wasn't overwhelmed by it. Thanks..hope to feel better soon too.
DeleteHi, dear Birgit!
ReplyDeleteI am very sorry to learn that you are ill. Please take good care of yourself and get well soon.
I enjoy watching movie trailers and appreciated all three of these. I grew up watching Marx Brothers movies and You Bet Your Life. I don't remember The Big Store, however. Van Johnson was in countless movies I watched over the years but I don't think I ever saw Summertime. I haven't seen Bad Santa either, but I loved Billy Bob Thornton in Fargo and Cloris Leachman in The Last Picture Show and other projects. When I saw John Ritter in that trailer I immediately assumed it was one of his last performances.
As for recommended movies of this theme I immediately thought of Bundle of Joy, Mannequin and Career Opportunities.
I hope you feel better soon, dear friend BB!
Please add George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead and the 1986 sci-fi horror film Chopping Mall.
Delete...and Little Shop of Horrors (Jack Nicholson).
DeleteI am on strong antibiotics now so hopefully it will kick this illness right out. Thank you so much for your concern and I so appreciate it. I'm glad you like these trailers, I thought I would try something new. John Ritter didn't look well...did he? I love Little Shop of Horrors...such an inventive choice. Mannequin is silly but cute but don't know the others and will check them out. I won't look at the zombie flick or chopping mall...hahahaaa the last one kind of explains itself and sounds like a bad horror flick. I might go for bad horror but usually they give me nightmares
DeleteCareer Opportunities and Mall Rats came to mind. Bad Santa had its moments for me.
ReplyDeleteI have heard of Mall Rats but not Career Opportunities. I love Bad Santa
DeleteI love Bad Santa. I'm willing to check out the musical, but I'll likely skip The Marx Brothers flick. Find me a Three Stooges or an Abbott and Costello and we're in business.
ReplyDeleteI bet the 3 stooges made a film where they were in a store. Love Abbott & Costello also. I am one who likes these and always wished I could be in a pie fight.
Delete
ReplyDeleteOMG, You poor thing, you must be miserable. Have you been to the doctor? Hope you feel much better soon!
Sorry, haven't seen any of them:(
I have been to the Dr twice. Yesterday I went back to the walk in clinic to get a dr's note and he gave me inhalers plus a much stronger antibiotic. I haven't been kicked down this badly in a long time
DeleteBad Santa was a bit strong medicine for me. In the Good Old Summertime is a delightful musical.
ReplyDeleteBad Santa is so rude and crude so it isn't for everybody. I love musicals so I felt this was a good choice
DeleteI'm sorry you're unwell. I hope you recover quickly. I've seen 2 and 3. I admit unabashedly that I think Billy Bob Thornton is an excellent actor. Other movies with shops, stores, malls: Mall Rats, You've Got Mail, Clerks, Pretty Woman, First Wives Club. That's all I can think of at the moment.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
I have been off work for a week so hopefully I will now get better. Thank you so much for your well wishes. I like Billy Bob as well and think he is quite good. Clerks is one I was expecting to see everywhere but haven't. Pretty woman is a good one considering how she gets back at those hoity toity gals in the boutique.
DeleteHope you feel better soon! Haven't seen these three, but wouldn't Elf count as a movie that was in a store? I love that movie :)
ReplyDeletebetty
Oh yes...Elf is perfect! It is a funny movie. I'm still sick and sick of being sick
DeleteA Marx Brothers film I haven't seen! I've seen bits of the Judy Garland one. Maybe I'll sit through it all the way sometime now that I know it's a remake of The Shop Around the Corner. I don't care too much for Van Johnson. Hope you get better soon.
ReplyDeleteI can take Van Johnson in this. He isn't one of my favourites either because I always felt he was a bit smarmy. He always seemed to be one who liked to have an audience when he was being interviewed.
DeleteI've only seen Bad Santa, and I've picked it as well, because it's absolutely brilliant. Sure it's rude but it still is one of my favourite Christmas movies.
ReplyDeleteIt is so rude but it's one of my favourites and it is also one that is actually endearing since he helps the kid and the kid helps him.
DeleteMarx Bros movies are adorable! And I love anything with Judy Garland in it. That movie sounds like the Meg Ryan "You've Got Mail," doesn't it? I hope you recover very soon.
ReplyDeleteThe original movie is Shop Around the Corner with Jimmy Stewart and was remade as the musical I picked and was again remade as , yes, You've Got Mail
DeleteSo sorry to hear you're sick (and so very sick at that!). Feel better soon. I'm amazed you can even think of three films on this topic, because it seems hard to me. I can't think of three. Good job!
ReplyDeleteI am ill for sure and have been off work the whole week which makes me nervous. The antibiotics are doing wonky things to my head and dreams which are wild!
DeleteTrue, Bad Santa's not for everybody, but I loved it. John Ritter was great in his role, of course, and Tony Cox was hilarious.
ReplyDeleteJohn Ritter was priceless in this film and Tony Cox should be in mor films regardless of his size because he is so funny.
DeleteP.S. Hope you feel better soon!
DeleteThank you..I do too
DeleteBIRGIT ~
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to learn you've been under the weather. Hopefully you're now beginning to climb back on top of the weather again. (Does anyone really understand that expression?)
Like several other folks here, the first movie that popped into my mind was the great, classic 'THE DEVIL AND MISS JONES' (starring Charles Coburn, my all-time favorite character actor).
I've only seen it once, and that was ages ago, but I remember kinda liking the very low-key "bookstore" romance '84 CHARING CROSS ROAD'.
That's all I can think of at the moment.
FYI, if you're feeling up to trying it, Debbie (also in Canada) found that the following video worked for her. It's the same KEELY SMITH recording used in my BOTB.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5Ctr-fPYmQ
Hope yer gettin' better, my friend.
~ D-FensDogG
'Loyal American Underground'
I am still ill and doing nothing as per dr's orders. I love Charles Coburn:) The Devil and. MIss. Jones is such a great film...love Jean Arthur. I tried that link and for some reason, it didn't work for me and I do t know why
DeleteThinking about you and hoping you're soon better.
ReplyDeleteHugs
Thank you very much. I hope so too.
DeleteHope you are recovering, that sounds awful! Of these, I've only seen the Judy Garland one.
ReplyDeleteIt's not nice that's for sure.
DeleteSorry to hear you're not well. I hope you recover soon.
ReplyDeleteInteresting choices. I haven't seen any of them. High Fidelity might work for this category. We recently watched Hobson's Choice. That would fit, too.
I haven't seen either of these films but will look them up.
DeleteOpportunity Knocks! Terrible film. But it counts.
DeleteSo sorry you're so sick Birgit! Sounds miserable. I hope you're feeling better by now...
ReplyDeleteGreat movie trailers. Bad Santa sounds good!
Love the Marx Brothers...
Michele at Angels Bark
I'm still ill which sucks. Bad Santa is really great
DeleteWhile I haven't seen the first two, Bad Santa is a classic.
ReplyDeleteBad Santa is a fun one
DeleteI'm sorry you're sick. I hope by now you're feeling better.
ReplyDeleteI've seen the musical, but not the other two. The movie I immediately thought of was Who's Minding the Store? A favorite from childhood.
I haven't seen Who's minding the Store since I was a kid...that would be a great pick
DeleteSure hope you're feeling much better today..this stuff you've described really knocks you for a loop. Never seen #1 (don't like the Marx brothers!) but #2 is a sweet favorite. They don't make movies like this now, (probably nobody but seniors would go see it! Always loved the lavish musicals). #3 is a possibility, sounds like it might be humorous if you overlook the language. My hubs likes Billy B...(loved Slingblade, I didn't!). Cloris Leachman always turns in a stellar performance. Feel better soon. Hugs & TFS
ReplyDeleteStill ill which sucks. Yup...either love the Marx Bros. or ya don't:) the musical is sweet and well done actually. I love Bad Santa but not sure if you would...you would have to see it
DeleteSick! That's not allowed in this beautiful summer season. So sorry. Get better soon.
ReplyDeleteAs to trailers. . .sometimes they're the best part of a film. I love seeing them.
Glad you like the trailers. Trying to get better
DeleteI did not know Billy Bob and John Ritter were buds.
ReplyDeleteHope you're resting.
They were great buddies and Billy Bob would often have John Ritter in his films
DeleteSo sorry you've been sick. Hope you are feeling much better now!
ReplyDeleteI am slowly getting better
DeleteHope you are feeling better! Being sick stinks!
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen any of these. The first movie that came to mind was Mallrats.
~Jess
I haven't seen Mallrats but heard about it
DeleteSorry you've been so sick!
ReplyDeleteMy three picks would be: High Fidelity (Jack Black makes this movie worth watching); Empire Records; and Mannequin--anyone else remember that movie?
Hope you feel better soon!
The first 2 are everywhere this week and I remember when Mannequin came out!
DeleteYey! The Max Brothers - although I haven't seen this one - still love the pick.
ReplyDeleteThey are so funny ...if you like them
DeleteI love Judy Garland and enjoy watching her films. To me, they are all classics. I recently watching A Star is Born. That's one one my favorites because I know what she was going through with her life then. So sad.
ReplyDeleteI noticed J.H.'s comment above and I remember Mannequin. That's a fun movie. :)
A Star is Born is excellent and she should have won the Oscar that year instead of Grace Kelly. I thought the press was horrible how they treated Judy as well. She had just given birth to her son and they expected her to win so they were all there and when she didn't they just left like she was a hot potato
DeleteI haven't seen the Marx Brothers movie, nor Judy Garland's, but I remember "The Shop Around the Corner". That was a good film! As for Bad Santa, we have it on DVD (the uncensored version) and watch it every Christmas season. What a hoot! ☺ It was also fun to see Lorelei Gilmore getting down and dirty.
ReplyDeleteHope you're feeling better, now. Sounds like you have it bad!
DeleteBad santa is great and we have the uncensored version as well. I am slowly getting better but it was a doosey of a cold and still is
DeleteSo sorry you've been sick. I hope you are feeling better this week.
ReplyDeleteI'm totally drawing a blank on any movie that fits this theme!
It's a hard one for sure. I am better than last week...blowing my nose big time
DeleteI'm probably the only person in the world didn't watch a lot of Groucho Marx:(
ReplyDeleteOne either loves The Marx Brothers or one doesn't
DeletePS How did work go?
ReplyDeleteWork was ok and back again. I am blowing my nose like no tomorrow and am quite tired. If I was home I think i would be sleeping. At least the infection is gone although still on the pills. All I want to do is sleep
DeleteHope you get to rest when you get home.
DeleteHugs
I'm sorry to hear you've been unwell Birgit, I've got some dilithium energy crystals, just give the word.
ReplyDeleteOh if they would work...I will have some:)
DeleteSorry to hear you're not feeling well, and that all of your face holes hurt. Get better soon, yeah?
ReplyDeleteAnd I haven't seen the first 2 (want to, love the Marx Brothers) but I have seen Bad Santa and make a point to see it every year for Christmas.
Up the face and body aches from the infection and bad cold....getting slowly better though. Bad Santa is a classic
DeleteOh hon, I hope your honey has been massaging your full body with Vick's, and that you're starting to feel MUCH better!
ReplyDeleteFun trio of movie picks.
He got sick too! So no body rubbing in any way:) He is already feeling better though which is good
DeleteI haven't seen any of these, Birgit — but Bad Santa sounds like something I'd enjoy (hehe). Hope you're feeling better now — and thanks so much for stopping over at Quiet Laughter yesterday! Do join Debbie's TMI hop; I'd love to read your answers :)
ReplyDeleteI plan to do this 25 things about moi. Bad Santa is a true hoot! I am slowing getting better which means I am heading in the right direction
DeleteI haven't seen any of these films. I do hope you are feeling better!!
ReplyDeleteI am getting there...slowly:)
DeleteYou surprise me every time! I like your first two picks - a little forgotten these days, definitely worth a mention. But with the tone you set in the first two, I definitely didn't see the third coming!
ReplyDeleteNever saw a Marx Brothers movie I didn't like. Well, except for that one with their older brother, Karl, "A Day at the Gulag."
ReplyDeleteI've always been meaning to get into the Marx Brothers but never really find the time. In the Good Ol' Summertime sounds like an interesting film. I have not seen Bad Santa, but I was unaware John Ritter was in it. As for the previews, I like the idea of including them when given the option. The posters are good too, but sometimes you only get so much information from them.
ReplyDelete
