Last but never Least-Wallace

I have to say, I am a dog person even though we have 5 cats and I love them so very much. Actually, I am an animal person but, even when I was a little kid, I loved the wolves and I would go up to any dog without fear. Back in 2009, my hubby and I went to PetSmart to buy some cat food and there was an adoptathon going on for dogs rescued from Louisiana. They were not Katrina dogs but just poor dogs that were ready to be euthanized since there are many kill shelters in the States. We were not expecting to get a dog, famous last words, but then my eyes met Wallace. All the other dogs were barking, wagging their tail and being, well, dogs. Wallace was in his crate way in the back as far as he could get, terrified beyond reason. We were there for 2 hours because I knew this dog was a special case...a nut case to be exact but he came part of our family. I named him Wallace, not after Wallace and Gromit (I love them) but after William Wallace who was a brave Scotsman.

Wallace is not brave, in fact, he is a bona fide chicken shit! He was so scared of people, the outside, everything that he would not eat for the first few days. I actually believe he had never been on a leash and ran wild around Louisiana. He spent months in his crate, security blankie,  as we slowly trained him to not do his business in the house, get used to his surroundings and get used to us. My beautiful Katie, My black lab who is in heaven with my dad, really helped Wallace. We tried everything from Rescue Remedy to even an anti anxiety med but to no avail-our Wallace has anxiety issues up the wazoo. We brought him to 3 different behaviourists and tried all they told us....yup, he is still a chicken shit but he is our chicken shit.

I am happy to say that we no longer need him in the crate-that went after a year, he is all happy and goofy in our home and he comes up to most people, although he still is wary of my brother. He still shakes and quakes the moment he realizes he is going for a walk and will try to hide in a corner but that is just him-he is agoraphobic. I can't walk him because of my joint problems since he has literally taken my shoulder out of its joint 3 times, thankfully I can just slip it back in but then I can't do much for a long, long time. When my hubby walks him, he can let him off his leash and, like a bullet, he runs straight home never veering off the sidewalk. I believe he was shot at in his young days because he can't go out when someone is using the roofing gun and I have to mute the TV when there is shooting going on in the program.  I just love it when he barks and comes to me when I come home giving me lots of kisses on my chin.

Name-Wallace
Age-7 years
Nickname-Mein Schatz, Hoover, Ya nut!
Loves-Cat food-wouldn't eat his dog food unless we mixed it with some cat food(now he is aok with just dog food), loves apples, nuts, broccoli, yup he is our freak. Jade
Toys-His kong-demands it around 9pm every night so gets a treat with some peanut butter. Cat toy, kleenix (disgusting). Can't give him any stuffed toys-eats them

  1. Hi, dear Birgit!

Thank you for introducing Wallace. I have seen scaredy-cat dogs like him and always feel so sorry for them. It's such a shame he doesn't like going outside. Most dogs can't wait to go for a walk. Wallace must have been severely mistreated before you came along and offered him your love and a home. My Toto loved her peanut butter kong, too. Thanks for reminding me of that. I know you miss your Katie like I miss Toto.

Thank you for being kind to animals and giving so many of them a forever home, dear friend BB!

    1. When we grab his leash, he wants to hide...poor thing. When we got him, he had a deep gash over his one eye and we do believe he was mistreated. He is just so scared and yet, sweet. When we take him into the woods, he becomes more relaxed and sniffs and is a normal dog

  10. Bless your heart. You've put stars in your crown.
Dogs really are hazardous. The HH has been jerked off his feet with disastrous results more than once.
    Love that last picture!

  11. Ah yes, the joys of joints going out of place. My mom is the same. That flexibility comes with it's own issues.

  12. What a dear, he is. So adorable. Dogs have such great personalities. Even though I don't really want a dog, it make me sick thinking about how many dogs have to be destroyed each year. So glad you were able to rescue him.

    1. It sickens me as well and also how many cats and dogs do not get spayed or neutered and are abused. There should be bigger laws against people who abuse animals.

  13. Wallace, you are one good looking dog. You landed in the right place because I know your mom is a softie.

  17. Enjoyed hearing your Wallace rescue story. Wallace is one lucky dog to come to a family who can appreciate his personality, love him, and give him security. His family is lucky to have adopted a pet that provides a lot of generous doggie love. TFS the story. Our DD rescues greyhounds, and has had 6 so far (I think just 6! maybe there's a new one now, and I just haven't been given the news!) Hugs & pats to Wallace. TFS- loved the outfit too.

  18. Wallace! Does he love cheese? He must love cheese. (Is that even healthy for a dog?)

  19. What a wonderful and sweet tribute to your Wallace, Birgit! It makes me happy that you have given him a loving home after his harrowing beginning. Our Duke is a chicken shit, too, but not quite as bad as Wallace. We know Duke came from a good home and he was a well-loved little puppy when they got him, so it's a mystery. I've had enough dogs, however, to personally think that sometimes they are born carrying the scars of their ancestors. I know, weird, but I don't know how else it can be explained. Anyway, big hugs to you both!! Enjoy your day!! Darnell

  20. Aww, so great to meet Wallace!! Love him in that devil costume! I want to dress Clancy up so badly but he won't allow it LOL. Wallace and the kitty look cozy but it also seems like they are trying to decide if they really like being that close to each other LOL. Wallace looks like he's not too sure about it. :D
I'm so glad he found a great home with you!!

  22. Birgit, what an interesting story of Wallace. I'm glad you were able to integrate into the family. You just never know how those things will work out sometimes. DD#2 got a second dog but after almost a year she realized it wasn't going to work. It destroyed their property and they are renters, so she had to find him a new home. Thanks for sharing the dog-tail! ;)

  23. That is an adorable chicken shit. It's okay that he's not brave. None of mine are. Let's face it, most of us don't have dogs with the intent of turning them into badass guard dogs anyway. Even one dressed menacingly as the devil.

  24. Oh, he's so cute. We have a scared dog here too. She's really fun and she likes to play but we can't bring her out for a walk because people scares her. Maybe because she's just a few months old and we seldom expose her to strangers.

  25. Wallace is so cute. I love that snuggling picture! He sounds like he has quite the personality. It can be hard being scared of everything. :)

  26. How wonderful that you rescued Wallace, Birgit! ☺ I feel sorry that he's so scared and can only imagine what horrible things befell him in his previous life. Thanks to your loving care, he's come a long way. Sweet boy! ♥

  28. LOVE this post, read it 5 times. Wallace is a sweetheart. He may have has a sketchy past but his future looks just fine. He reminds me of our Peanut who is afraid of her own shadow...still. But the moment she dons her pink helmet and riding jacket... she is a fearless hell's angel! Yes... Wallace has found his forever home. He is one lucky Mein Schatz!
    hugs, Asha
