Thursday Movie Picks- Movies based on a TV Show

Sorry for not being around, my dear friend from Vancouver came for the weekend and we had a great time together even if it was short. He is now venturing off to Northern Ontario and Montreal to visit family. This weekend my cousin and his wife are coming for a visit so busy, busy!  This week are all about the movies that originally came from TV shows (more and more films seem to be based on TV shows since Hollywood has no brain). I could have picked so many but if you want to see more, head on over to Wandering Through The Shelves, the brain child of this weekly series, to see what the others have chosen. My 3 are...

1. MUNSTERS, GO HOME-1966

I love The Munsters more than The Addams Family with their zany antics but very loving demeanour. The patriarch, played by the great Fred Gwynne, is Herman who is quite tall with bolts in his neck. The beautiful Yvonne De Carlo plays his vampish wife and, grandpa, son Eddie and their "normal" niece, Marilyn, all live in a great mansion and ride in one cool car! This film follows them to England where Herman has inherited a mansion. Their relatives do not want them anywhere near the castle and try various methods to get rid of them. I love this movie, it's silly but fun and harmless.

2. STAR TREK-1979 TO PRESENT

If someone does not know about this great series and all the movies, then you have been living under a rock:). I mean, Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Uhura, Sulu, Chekhov and all the sad security men in red shirts are world famous by now. You also have Picard, Data, Riker, Troi, Crusher and her annoying kid plus there is Deep Shit, I mean, Space Nine and Voyager etc... Initially it was a 5 year mission to go where no man has gone before. The original series ended after 3 years but after an animated series in the 70's, the film franchise was born in 1979, directed by Sound of Music director, Robert Wise. The first film is all science fiction with V'Ger, a bald gal and venturing into unknown territory. The 2nd film, a favourite of mine, involves revenge, a great acting tour de force by Ricardo Montalban and Spock's death while the 3rd is about Spock's resurrection(sort of speak) and bad Klingons. The 4th involves time travel and whales whereas the 5th, I think the worst, is about Spock's half brother looking for God. The 6th involves Kirk getting it on with a freaky Iman in a prison, Christopher Plummer as a nutbar, Shakespeare talking Klingon and a peace treaty. After that, Picard and his crew took over before the new actors playing the original characters took over. Which one is your favourite?-Kahn (2nd film) and Picard and the Borg are mine.

3. NAKED GUN-1988

I love Leslie Nielsen and am so happy he is a Canuck who has a Brother in politics and their dad was a Mountie(although he was nasty). Who else could play dead pan Lieut. Frank Devon who bumbles his way from the TV show Police Squad( a great, short-lived show) onto the film screen and never look back. A cop, played by OJ.(yup that OJ), is in the hospital and Frank is going to try to clear that cops name plus save the Queen who is coming for a state visit. Poor Ricardo Montalban plays the bad guy again and Priscilla Presley plays the love interest. The sight gags, the one liners, the dead pan delivery is so funny that I consider this one of the best comedies! I love  the 2 sequels as well. It's just so, so funny!

What movies do you think of that came from TV Shows??

  1. Star Trek is definitely the best pick. Two of the series became movies.

    1. Star Trek is the best and you are so right that the original and the Next Generation made so many films aft the series. I love the series and the films even the bad ones.

  2. I never watched Star Trek on TV, but I do love the movies. You are right about hollywood writers. We have remakes of remakes, movies based on TV shows and top-selling books, but where are the original manuscripts? I should wander over to google and look to see what movies have won awards for original screenplays not based on something that already exists or has happened.

    1. Every year the Oscars give just such an award, to the Best Original Screenplay. Searching those archives, both the winners and nominees, ought to give you a good place to start.

    2. Tony's right...the Oscars are a good place to start and the screenwriters awards also.

  3. Hi, Birgit!

Busy as you have been entertaining your house guest, I am very grateful that you made time to visit SDMM. What a great friend you are. Thank you!

The Munsters was one of my favorite TV series of the 60s. As I think I mentioned before, I liked it more than The Addams Family. I saw Munster, Go Home when it was released. As I recall it was on a double bill with the Don Knotts comedy The Ghost and Mr. Chicken. It was the first time we saw the Munster family in color and I remember thinking that they didn't seem quite like themselves in color, not as funny, and the overall effect of their makeup not as scary, testimony that the original black and white Universal horror films of the 30s and 40s were fright done right. In that trailer I appreciated the reference to Car 54 Where Are You, the earlier series that starred Herman and Grandpa (Fred Grynne and Al Lewis). It was another favorite of mine.

I am certainly aware of the Star Trek series, but I am one of the few people on earth that never got into it. Same with Star Wars.

Naked Gun is a hilarious movie and Leslie Nielsen was one of the most naturally funny people I ever had the pleasure of watching. In a few days it will be six years since his death, a big big loss for the world of entertainment.

Of course Leave It To Beaver, The Beverly Hillbillies and Bewitched immediately come to mind as other TV series brought to the big screen, and recently Mrs. Shady and I watched for the 5th time the Robert Redford directed film Quiz Show, based on Twenty One.

    Thank you, dear friend BB!

    1. Quiz Show is a brilliant pick and I wish I would have thought of that film. I'm glad you like The Munsters and I wish I had their car. At least you know about Star Trek:)

  4. I have seen probably all the Star Trek movies. Funny how the series was on only for 3 years on television. Equalizer comes to mind with a show on TV being made into a movie. Glad you had a good visit with your friend.

  5. Aww The Munsters! I used to watch them on Nick at Nite when I was a kid. I do like the newer Star Trek movies, those are perfect for those of us that didn't like the original series.

  6. I also picked The Wrath of Khan! It is one of my favourites of the franchise, and Montalban is amazing in there! I didn't know Naked Gun was based on a series. Anyway, I also loved them all three! They're stupid but very funny.

  7. Good choices and once again we have a match!

As a kid I'm sure I saw all The Munsters but I'm not a huge fan despite my liking of both Fred Gwynne and especially Yvonne de Carlo the movie was really just more of the same.

Same goes with the original Star Trek which reran endlessly when I was young and I've enjoyed most of the films, The Voyage Home is a particular favorite, but I never watched any of the later shows.

The Naked Gun movies & the original show are goofy fun and our match.

So many choices to pick from this week so it was a breeze.

Serenity (2005)-Continuing the story of Captain Mal Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) and his crew who are roaming the galaxy in their beat up spaceship Serenity from the short lived show Firefly. With a brother and sister who are being pursued by a hired killer, the ruthless Operative (Chiwetel Ejiofor) the group planet hop from place to place in their somewhat unreliable rust bucket. By turns light-hearted and tense.

The Fugitive (1993)-Dr. Richard Kimble (Harrison Ford) is attacked in a home invasion and his wife murdered by a one armed man. Falsely accused of the crime he escapes after a spectacular train wreck and sets out to find the person responsible all the while pursued by the dogged efforts of Deputy Sam Gerard (Tommy Lee Jones). Fasted paced and entertaining, TLJ won a best supporting Oscar for his work. Updated and slightly rethought version of the classic David Janssen series with some terrific action set pieces.

Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988)-There’s a plot to turn innocent people into assassins and through them kill prominent people including Queen Elizabeth II but the police are on it. The problem however is that the case has been assigned to Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen) an utterly clueless detective who specialty is bumbling. Silly comedy turned formerly stern leading man Nielsen into a comedy mainstay. Based on the comic TV series Police Squad.

    1. I'm glad we still have a match! I have never seen Serenity at all. The Fugitive is the big one this week I think. It's a good movie but not fantastic....I like the series better.

  8. My favorite Star Trek film with the original series cast was #4, The Voyage Home. Lots of fun. My Next Generation favorite was First Contact.

I don't usually care for the Hollywood reboots of old TV series, but there are always exceptions.

  10. Star Trek is the best for me. Deep Space 9 was the best series by far. I feel gyped there were no DS9 films.

If I were to select a movie based on a TV show, it would be Doctor Who. Two original classic films were done in the 60's. If you like vintage, you should look up the trailers for those films. The lead is played by Peter Cushing (Better known to most as Grand Moff Tarkin in the Star Wars Franchise).

    1. Sorry that I am not a fan of DS9. Maybe I should try that again....Dr. Who is a good one as well...I remember seeing the movie but only years and years ago.

  11. Yep, no brain indeed. But three fun picks. Star Trek definitely deserves to be there. Now a days it is reverse too, with 50,000 movies being made into tv shows.

    1. Omg! You have to see the show and the movies. I believe the second film has the scene where Frank has to wake up these people attending a convention because there is a bomb nearby. He wakes them up by reading a romance novel..." he placed his purple headed warrior into her quivering love pudding." I almost fell out off the chair.

  18. I'm a late-comer to the Star Trek fandom, but I do enjoy watching episodes from the original and Next Generation series. I've enjoyed all three of the new movies. Another TV show to movie that I like is the A-Team.

  21. I see the Firefly to Serenity movie connection has already been mentioned. It was my favorite as it actually gave an ending to that series.

I didn't see it, but The Wild Wild West was made into a movie. I loved watching the TV series with my dad when I was a kid.

The big thing now is turning movies into TV series. There truly are no original ideas! Hahaha.

They made a Beverly Hillbillies movies and The Flintstones was made into a live action movie. The Simpsons Movie and I believe they made a Beavis and Butthead movie. I thought of one more but in and out of my head it went.

  23. Great picks. I haven't seen that Munsters flick (or the TV show) since I was, like, 10 years old. Watched it several times, though, as they used to show it at least once a year. To be honest, it's amazing there was a second Star Trek movie. That first was so bad and, worse, relentlessly boring. The Wrath of Khan righted the ship, thankfully. That's also my favorite of the franchise. My favorite of all your picks, however, is The Naked Gun. I love every second of that movie, of that whole trilogy plus the TV show, really.

    2. My ex loves the first ST movie with the bald lady who looks like she belongs to the Yul Brynner fan club. He claims it's great science fiction and I claim it's boring and silly at the end although their sex unity must have been great.

  24. The Munsters reminded me that there were a few Addams Family movies also. That was one of my favourite shows growing up. I loved when Gomez and Morticia did the Tango and he called her "Carida". ☺ I'm a fan of the original Star Trek and Next Gen, plus their movies. Not so much into the other series. There was a TV show called "The Highlander" in the '90s that derived from a movie. When the show was over, they made it into another movie.

Have a great weekend with your visitors!

    1. I do love the sexual chemistry...I mean Gomez and Morticia. Herman and lily were just happily married but no sexual tension. Loved the Highlander movie...just the first one. The tv show was....not great. I tried watching it but it wasn't a favourite of mine. I did like Voyager in the ST franchise.

    2. Yeah; Gomez and Morticia were hot! ☺ Speaking of hot, I was totally hooked on The Highlander series and had a crush on its star, Adrian Paul. He looked like a young Sean Connery. Was Voyager the one with the female captain? I watched a couple of episodes but couldn't get into it, somehow.

  25. UNQUESTIONABLY 'The Wrath of Khan.' Followed by 'First Contact.'

  27. BIRGIT ~
I can't think of a single movie based on a TV show that I loved or even really, really liked.

I guess 'THE NAKED GUN' comes closest. But after having seen the hilarious 'AIRPLANE', to me 'THE NAKED GUN' gave me a "been there, done that" kind of feeling.

Otherwise... I got nuttin'. Not a fan of SciFi, so 'STAR TREK' is out. (Saw a couple of them and they bored me like the show does.)

Sorry. Wish I had sumpin' new to offer here. I'll do better next time ...(I hope).

  31. I keep watching for a Musters remake. I mean, they seem to have done it with every other old movie/series out there. Of course, you know they'd ruin it. I loved the original.

  32. I think Hollywood wanted to incorporate the cold, slow, successful outcome of the space odyssey feel into Star Trek. So along came Star Trek TMP and boy was Paramount shook up after Star Wars hit the cinema, so they scrubbed Star Trek Phase II. Wrath of Khan is great Birgid because its what they wanted, death, action, sci fi, mystery unlike Beyond which was missing a key ingredient and dragged out. Khans revenge you mention added a new crisp dimension and made me feel alive and concerned about the Enterprise, compared to Beyond - I'm waiting for the dust to settle before I write a review. Too many trekkers carry phasers these days, ha.

  33. Birgit, I didn't know they made a Munster's movie. We recently re-watched all the older Star Trek movies on Netflix. I think they are no longer available. Anywho, it was great watching them again. The original cast is what made the old TV series and the big screen pictures so special. I can not warm up to the new characters. They just don't seem to have as much fun with their roles like the original crew. Leslie Nielsen is hilarious and we've seen all the Naked Gun movies and they always crack me up! Great flick reviews!

  34. I love Naked Gun too, Birgit.
It's not high quality, but I also really like the Brady Bunch movie. Have you seen it? I think it's hilarious.

  37. I didn't know The Munsters got made into a movie. Interesting. I loved Police Squad, though. Still one of my all time favorite TV shows. I think I'm still upset 30 years later that they canceled that so quickly. That freeze frame end credit gag always got me.

  38. Leslie Nielsen is a hoot:)

  39. Star Trek...I've only seen the newer movies, while entertaining not really something that is memorable to me. As for the series, The Next Generation is the only one I've seen. I don't remember much, but I probably liked it because I used to watch it a lot.
