This was the gob smack moment of the evening. You can look up who won so I won't make a list here but I have my own list of questions that I will now list and answer. If you have watched the show, I'd love to know what you think.
1. Best Dressed
People who don't watch may not care and major film buffs may put their noses up to this but I love the fashions to see who looks great, who looks horrible and basically cutting up the fashions or figuring out how to fix them up better, (like we could anyway) but I am showcasing my best here and it goes to Meryl Streep believe it or not. She usually doesn't drsss the best but I loved the colour, the style and the glitter plus it looks comfortable. I also must give a nod to Taraji P. Henson who looked sexy but not sexpot (despite the boobs a plenty) in this navy blue dress with a beautiful necklace. I also loved Charlize Theron in her metallic dress of pleats.
2. Worst Dressed
Oh, well, this one is so much fun because you have the gals who think the colour is great when it looks like a bland gluten, sugar, salt, wheat free wafer. Nicole Kidman was blah and so was Felicity Jones in her, I wanna be in a girl's jewelry box turning around to The Sugar Plum Fairy, blah dress. Octavia Spencer reminded me of those dolls found on the toilet tank where the skirt hid the toilet paper roll. The top was nice, although she needed a necklace, but the bottom was a large blob of feathers..ughhhh. Halle Berry's dress was nice but her hair......oh my...Holy light socket Batman! My pick for worst is Janelle Monae with her bombastic glittery Marie Antoinette concoction. I am wondering how she got through the doors, how did she sit in the chairs and how did she go to the bathroom?? Dakota Johnson from the 50 Shades of Blechhh also wore a blechh dress with her own nappy in the front when she chows down on some food later.
3. Best Speech
Viola Davis gave a great speech about how the average joe has a story to tell and how they need to be remembered. One Classy Dame!
4. Worst Speech
The people who won for best Production Dessign. They won for La La Land and they just sounded bla blah.
5. Worst Nomination
Meryl Streep. Yes she was in a movie but does one have to nominate her every F-ing year?? Why wasn't Amy Adams up for a nomination??
6. Pissed that they won
I didn't have a huge $@;/ moment for this but I think Star Trek should have won for best make up not Suicide Squad. The Joker in Suicide Squad was horrible.
7. What Drug Are They On
I was really hoping Winona Ryder would show up but, alas, most were great but I will give this award to Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway...poor things because of the waiting moment that Warren did and Faye just thinking he was being an ass and reading out the title without looking more.
8. Favourite Moment
I always love the memorial moment because they showcase and pay respect to the people who were not only famous to us but behind the scenes as well and they deserve this recognition. The song was beautifully done as well.
9. WHY???
Jimmy Kimmel brought in a group of tourists who thought they were going to see costumes and found themselves in front of all the major stars. If I was there, I would be loving it to see all these stars right up close and our Canadian, in the ruffled shirt, Ryan Gosling, actually got up first and shook their hands. There were quite a few who just kept taking selfies and not taking in the moment before they were herded off out of the auditorium. It just seems to me that everyone wants to outdo Ellen DeGeneres when she did that big group selfie. This took up quite a bit of time.
10. How was the Host
From 1 to 5 I give him a 4 actually. I know some will hate him and I already heard that but I thought his jokes were funny (for the most part) and he kept it entertaining. He was great at the end with Warren Beatty too. How would you rate him??
Here was to a hair raising end of the evening...
Have anything to add??
I heard about the snafu and that the tourist thing drug on way too long. But that was all after the fact, as no way I could sit through 3+ hours of that. Funny that the Joker won in Suicide Squad, just a demented clown.
ReplyDeleteIt's always very long. Suicide Squad shouldn't have won
DeleteI didn't watch, so thanks for the summary. Of course, everyone has heard about the mixup at the end. I feel sorry for the makers of La La Land! Can you imagine? Meryl does look good in that colour. I wasn't even aware that she had made a movie recently. I love Viola Davis and am happy she won an Oscar. Hubby and I are hooked on her TV show "How to Get Away With Murder". Major acting talent there.
ReplyDeleteViola is a major acting talent. It seems the producer of la La Land is close to the producer and director of Moonlight soit seemed to go a bit better to hear it from a friend. It was sad on both parts because Moonlight didn't really get a chance to say thanks
DeleteI actually don't blame Beatty or Dunaway at all. The Best Actress award had already been given out, so the envelope / card shouldn't have even been near the Best Picture envelope / card. Were the presenters supposed to stop the show to argue about it?
ReplyDeleteI really am sick of Streep.
Adams was one of the most talked-about snubs when the noms were released.
I am not a Streep fan either but I like her dress. I don't blame Beatty or Dunaway...it was a huge foul up
DeleteNot a big Kimmel fan but I thought he did a good job, and that gig can't be easy.
ReplyDeleteI think that gig must be tough-tough audience and shown to millions
DeleteThanks for the summary. Streep looks fat. Love Henson's dress. Johnson's dress reminds me of that Carol Burnett Gone with the Wind skit. Wonder if anyone asked Halle to remove her that.
ReplyDelete'Hat' not 'that'.
DeleteStreep is probably thinner than me:) I'm sick of her but I do like that dress. You're right about the Gone With The Wind dress-hahahaaa. Can you imagine sitting behind Halle with that thing on her head...birds could nest in that
DeleteShe's likely thinner than that dress makes her look.
DeleteI thought the tourist segment was hilarious.
ReplyDeleteI had the watch the mess up this morning as it ended way past my bedtime. I bet someone got fired over that.
Your first pick for worst dressed - I couldn't agree more.
I took Monday off so I could stay up and i bet the man got fired.
DeleteGee, I'm sorry I missed this one.
ReplyDeleteI bet it is all over youtube
DeleteDidn't watch, but I loved reading your takes on what happened. I suspect that was better than actually watching. I quit watching years ago, when everyone had to get up and make a political statement, and f'r heavens' sakes: this is entertainment. The actors need to keep their political beliefs private, and definitely not use the academy awards as a forum..Now, I liked Meryl's dress, but also loved the metallic ensemble. For the rest of the pictures you showed: makes me wonder what designer created those dresses. And I wouldn't diss Warren for a mistake of this sort. Like you said, split second to think, lots of eyes, yep, mistakes can happen. TFS & for a most enjoyable post!!!
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed my post. Thankfully, except for Kimmel and a couple of people who read a statement, it was not as poiltical as I thought it would be.
DeleteDid you hear about the one in the In Memoriam montage that is actually still alive?
ReplyDeleteI don't pay much attention to the dresses. I did watch the whole thing, but on "tape delay" (I set the DVR and watched about 20 min behind until I caught up, and then I took a break).
The name was right the picture was wrong...what a mess because most people would not know that lady
DeleteEnjoyed your review of the Oscars :) I didn't watch them. I remember when we lived in Southern California, especially closer to where the Oscars were held than when we were in San Diego the fuss made with the TV newscasters covering the Oscars, who wore what, the red carpet, etc. I often think with the amount of money the stars have, why do they come up with some of the designs they decide to wear?
ReplyDeletebetty
It's nuts actually. back in the 1950's Joanne Woodward made her own dress which looked really pretty and everyone was aghast. With all that money there, why don't they give it to charity
DeleteI had a good laugh on the night and I only watch it for the fashions....and the bling....your summary is far more entertaining than the program and has made me laugh all over again, bless you Birgit you always cheer me up xxxxxxx
ReplyDeleteThanks! I can't believe some of the crap these people wore. My friend said that it looks like Janelle stood there dressed in velcro and someone through sparkly stuff at her to see what sticks:)
DeleteI mostly don't know who those actresses are any more. I enjoyed your summary though. I didn't watch the programme, haven't for a number of years. I feel very sorry for the La La Land people though, first thinking they've won and then that they haven't. Quite a let down.
ReplyDeleteIt is a letdown and for Moonlight too since the spotlight was taken away. This will go down as the major screw up of all time
DeleteAgree the song was beautiful in the In Memoriam section. Makes me want to explore Joni Mitchell's other music. Also agree Kimmel did a good job as host.
ReplyDeleteI actually thought the group of tourists was a fun, fresh idea. Matt Damon interrupted by Kimmel conducting the orchestra made me laugh. Timberlake's nominated song is a lot better live.
I have Joni Mitchell's CD and it is great. I liked the tourists but it just seemed to go on a bit too long for my taste. Loved the Matt Damon/Kimmel banter and that part was funny. I did like the Timberlake song but still glad la la won
DeleteSo hilarious listening to Kimmel sounding off about Streeps 20th nomination and wasn't he a good sport to rustle up an undeserving round of applause for the ol gal! Oh I'm going to remain neutral on the judging costume contest, Birgit lol. Its hard to miss Hollywoods wonderful babes who all felt truly amazing at the Oscars to be sure.
ReplyDeleteThat part with Kimmel was really funny and i had no idea she was just in some "feud" with Karl Lagerfeld. I have to say, if i was given a couture gown to wear and some bling...I would love it for a day
DeleteI saw that Ryan Gosling was with another woman at the Oscars showing a huge portion of her breasts off. I know he's practically married to Eva Mendes (they apparently keep their relationship extremely private) so I was scratching my head.
ReplyDeleteIt was his sister.
I was wondering who the boob lady was because every time they cut to him it seemed her boobs went into 3D-knowing it was his sister just made it..um...creepy:)
DeleteWhat fun! You caught the highlights:)
ReplyDeleteThough, I have to admit, I don't think Meryl could ever be nominated too often. I think she's the most talented actress out there.
Yes, I know I am in the minority when it comes to Streep. I still have to see some of her big films. i have tried to watch French Lieutenant's Woman and Sophie's Choice often and each time, I fall asleep
DeleteI like Jimmy's humor, which is kind of dry and understated. Halle Berry's hair was a shock. Meryl Streep is great, but this year's nomination should have gone to Amy Adams or Taraji P. Henson. I got sick of seeing/hearing that Beatty and Dunaway read the wrong name. One of the accountants made a mistake!
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
I enjoyed Jimmy's performance and thought he carried the show well. You are 100%. Right that it was the person who handed Beatty and Dunaway the envelope was the one who made the mistake and soon he will be flipping burgers somewhere. I agree that Streep should not have been nominated at all
DeleteI don't find Kimmel's show very funny, but he did well as the host.
ReplyDeleteThat was Amy Adams' best performance and it was a crime she wasn't nominated.
From What I hear Arrival would not have been a movie without Amy Adams
DeleteI had absolutely no desire to watch the show itself. I think I prefer your recap by a mile, especially of the best/worst dressed. It's never hard to find someone who tried way too hard to look cool (and failed miserably) at an awards show, is it?
ReplyDeleteThat gal with the big Marie Antoinette hip pads is so far away from cool ...it's just a disaster. Now, I would love to see some of these gals try to go for a pee with all that crap they are wearing...or not wearing. Just seeing them try to get out of the spandex is enough of a laugh for me
DeleteI didn't even watch it. I'm pretty well in agreement with Bryan. (see above) I think you recapped it perfectly. And now I feel like I have watched it:)
ReplyDeleteI am glad you could picture it from my recap
DeleteI have no idea who most of those people are, but I actually thought the first "worst dressed" was a pretty cool dress. Although the girl definitely could have used much less see-though fabric....
ReplyDeleteThese people make millions, get to dress in the most expensive dresses and jewelry, jetset around the world and most have no clue how to deal with money. I am so done with the see through fabric
DeleteI agree, Taraji P. Henson was stunning! Dakota Johnson easily wore the worst dress of the night. What on earth was her stylist even thinking?
ReplyDeleteI'm still trying to recover from that ending. Anyway, you're right, Meryl Streep shouldn't have been there, she got the nomination only because of the Golden Globes speech in my opinion.
As for the host, I loved Jimmy. I'm not a big fan of him, but he was very entertaining and for the first time I didn't struggle to stay up until 6 am so I guess he really did a great job.
Oh, the memorial was my favourite part too, and I cried when Carrie Fisher said may the force be with you.
Taraji was great and knows how to work the room. Dakota looks horrible in that blecchy gown with the bib at her waist. I don't watch Jimmy Kimmel but he did a good job and I feel bad for Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway because it was not there fault. I almost shed a tear when i saw that but I thought the ending to that was great
DeleteI understand that the Beatty v. Dunaway feud for the past 50 years may have been behind that oops moment. He refused to rehearse with her. They squabbled over who would read the winner and when he handed her the envelope there's speculation he set her up. Tsk. Tsk.
ReplyDelete#7 will go down in the annals of Oscar History, that's for sure.
ReplyDeleteHave a great one.
I thought everyone on stage handled the mistake quite well. I hope no one is showing himself/herself as a sore loser or winner. The memorial moment was wonderfully done. :-)
