So today is this wonderful letter..I don't know why it's wonderful, but it is:) Head on over to the A to Z Challenge to see what other people are writing about.
VICTOR/VICTORIA-1982
DIRECTOR: Blake Edwards
STARS: Julie Andrews, James Garner, Robert Preston, Lesley Ann Warren, Alex Rocco
OSCAR NOMS: Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Art Direction, Best Costume
OSCAR WINS: Best Score
PLOT: A young, starving singer meets a gay man who reinvents her as a gay transvestite man from a small Eastern block country. She becomes the new hit as a man pretending to be a woman but is a woman. Things get difficult when a mob boss from the States comes to see the show and finds himself falling for the man..er...woman.
LOVE: Robert Preston who I thought should have won the Oscar
TRIVIA: The dress Julie Andrews wears in her scene in the nightclub is the exact same dress Robert Preston later wears. They tied the dress up so it would fit her. When Preston wears the dress, he does the scene in one take which is why he is a bit out of breath and starts to laugh. The dress suffered a few rips.
VIVIENE CHANDLER- November 6, 1947-June 6, 2013
OCCUPATION: Actress, Photographer
OSCAR NOMS: Nil
OSCAR WINS: Nil
ANECDOTE: She played bit parts in many films and even in a rock video by Asia (The Smile Has Left Your Eyes). She changed careers and became an excellent photographer specializing in children and sold many of her works to private collectors
Double word score for the win. Game over! :)
ReplyDeleteHi, Birgit!
Happy V-Day to you, dear friend! I predicted that you would select Victor/Victoria. I saw this gender bender in the early 80s and enjoyed it. I agree that Robt. Preston deserved an Oscar for his performance. As a director Blake Edwards was on a hot streak and I saw many of his films including Experiment in Terror with Lee Remick, Days of Wine and Roses, the Pink Panther series, The Party (another great Peter Sellers vehicle), Bo Derek in 10, and S.O.B. (another film starring Julie Andrews and Robert Preston).
Thanks, dear friend BB!
I was thinking about which film to use and glad to know you thought the same way. Blake Edwards was a great director and deserves more accolades
DeleteThat was such a fun movie. Lots of fun movies with cross-dressing including Tootsie and Some Like it Hot.
ReplyDeleteYes! One always loves a good cross dressing film
DeleteI adore Julie Andrews but amazingly I haven't seen this. We just watched Mary Poppins for the hundredth time, and her Netflix series is a lot of fun.
ReplyDeleteI don't know the Netflix series at all! I should look it up even though I don't get netflix
DeleteWhat a fun movie that was...I just love Blake Edwards films.....hey one I have seen Birgit.......need a good film this afternoon as we have hailstones and sleet today....snuggling up warm on the sofa xxxxx
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you like this movie pick. I've been wanting to see The Full Monty again. Is that a good pick??
DeleteSounds like a fun one indeed, a prelude to Tootsie.
ReplyDeleteI like this one better than Tootsie
DeleteI remember this movie and not really buying into the preposterous plot.
ReplyDeleteOh yes...total screw all that would not happen but who cares??
DeleteBirgit, I definitely remember "Victor/Victoria" but I'm not sure if we've seen it or not. I'm not sure if I know Viviene Chandler but she kinda looks familiar. I will take a look at IMdb for her filmography. Thanks for sharing and for visiting!

There isn't much on her at all except that she was in A Clockwork Orange and a couple other films.
DeleteI've seen a lot of films by Blake Edwards, but not this one. I always loved it when Robert Preston was cast in his later roles, so I'll probably see this one eventually.
ReplyDeleteHe is great in this film...love venhim in this and also Alex Karras
DeleteThat sounds...complicated
ReplyDeleteFunny. When you said on my blog that you weren't sure about V (or U and some other letter), I did say Victor/Victoria. This one is a favorite of mine. I saw it when I was pretty young. Probably a teenager. (That was shortly after it came out.) I can probably recite certain scenes...
ReplyDeleteIt's a great movie...I love it
DeleteHi Birgit - I never really saw this movie .. but certainly watched parts of the tv ... though - fascinating to read about Robert Preston and his managing both parts and then being puffed ... cheers Hilary

ReplyDeleteHe's so funny in this film and you know he had fun

ReplyDeleteViviene was beautiful.
She was and it's nice that she had a different career later

It's very intelligent and yet farcical
DeleteI was a Julie Andrews fan in my youth (Mary Poppins / Sound of Music era) but I think I must have outgrown her by this time as I haven't seen it.
ReplyDeleteThis is a an excellent movie and Julie does not play the innocent gal like in those 2 movies. It's quite witty
DeleteI don't know why I never saw this film!

It's funny
DeleteEnjoyed this movie. Clever.
ReplyDeleteIt is!
DeleteNever saw this and probably missed a good one. Just couldn't imagine sweet Julie dressed as a man. Had loved her so much in Sound of Music and My Fair Lady.
ReplyDelete"Female Scientists Before Our Time"
Shells–Tales–Sails
Oh she is so good in this and not at all her sweet image from those films but she is still Julie...hope you see this one day
DeleteDid Chandler play the ditzy girlfriend of Garner's character? Must go look it up. I love Preston's scene. I wondered if the director simply kept the camera rolling when the song was over.
