Letter D
DARKEST HOUR-2017
Winston Churchill comes to power with the stranded soldiers at Dunkirk to deal with, as well as the opposition in his own government. A film that seems to not appeal to the younger generation which means I loved it! Since I have already been given a seniors discount at the drug store, even though I am not there yet, I qualify as older:)
Gary Oldman is beyond excellent capturing the essence of this complex man who had to deal with major obstacles including his own bi-polar disorder, Kristin Scott Thomas is great as his wife. The film takes places over a month and glorifies this controversial figure in history...but I still love it.
Gary Oldman had to deal with nicotine poisoning due to the amount cigars he smoked and get a colonoscopy....cough and relax:)
Hi, Birgit!
ReplyDeleteI have not seen Darkest Hour but you have me interested. Mrs. Shady is a history and WWII buff and over the years I have joined her in watching many historic films and documentaries. A few days ago she watched the Churchill film The Gathering Storm.
Gary Oldman is indeed a great actor. I still can't get over his performance in Bram Stoker's Dracula. We (or at least I) tend to forget the amount of body punishment actors and actresses often endure in fleshing out a movie role. This includes dramatic weight gain or loss, heavy smoking and, as we discussed a couple days ago, dangerous, sometimes painful and injurious stunt work.
Thank you and happy "D" Day to you, dear friend BB!
I have yet to see this. It's on my list.
ReplyDeleteI still need to see this. Hopefully, soon. They don't have a phony stand-in for cigars in Hollywood, yet? I hope he didn't cause himself any permanent damage.
ReplyDeleteThe Darkest Hour was the best movie I've seen this year. Worth seeing.
ReplyDeleteOh, this movie was just so boring. Oldman was probably the only good thing in it.
ReplyDeleteI'll probably see it before the summer starts
ReplyDeleteI still really want to see that one.
ReplyDeleteHmm, absolutely no desire to see this one. I do not have good feelings towards Churchill, 2WW not withstanding.
ReplyDeleteSome interesting comments on this one. I did enjoy Oldman in this film, but it did strike me as a bit old fashioned in the British flag waving, glorifying war fashion. A good choice to start some debate though!

I don't think I ever saw this one. Huh!
ReplyDeleteHaven't seen this one yet, but I intend to. Gary Oldman seems to be able to play any kind of role, and play it well. Dracula, Sid Vicious, Commissioner Gordon, Lee Harvey Oswald, Sirius Black, Ludwig van Beethoven...!!!
ReplyDeleteStill have yet to see it. Blah to the consequences though. Some extras really go the extra mile.
ReplyDeleteI have not seen this one yet. I imagine I will eventually.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen Darkest Hour yet. I look forward to it. I liked Dunkirk very much.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
That's waiting for us to see this evening! Can hardly wait.
ReplyDeleteI broke my keyboard today, so this is brief. I can't believe I've missed B and C already. I wanted to see this movie. I heard it was fabulous. You picked a good D because it is one I hope to see when it comes to TV or maybe Netflix. I'm off to see what I've missed.
ReplyDeleteI'm *dying* to see this one! Hasn't made it to CuraƧao theaters yet, but I keep hoping it will... Or maybe they'll have it as one of the 'big' films in the film festival—it's starting next week! Actually tomorrow we have the preview screening, and they'll have the full program available then. Hopefully this year I'll get around to my reviews within weeks instead of months, haha.
ReplyDeleteGreat theme for the A-to-Z, Birgit! Will be looking forward to the rest of your posts.

I had thought I was getting the DVD from Netflix, but instead it was a movie about an alien attack in Moscow. It was a cool movie, but I still want to see this more recent one.

Hi Birgit - it's an excellent film ... as Churchill was a complex person - with a big ego ... cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteNicotine poisoning - good lord! I have heard good things about the movie, but not seen it yet.

Birgit,
ReplyDeleteI don't care how much money H-wood would throw at me if I was an actress I don't think they could pay me enough to subject myself to such extents. Being a starlet isn't all cracked up to what you believe. Oh yeah, interesting sounding flick. I will check into it. Thanks for visiting my A2Z iPad Art Sketch 'Dolphin' post yesterday!
Matt would like that movie, we have The Gathering Storm and he likes that. Although we were babes at the time, it is part of our lives.
