Thursday Movie Picks:TV Edition-Crime Shows

It’s almost the end of July! I can’t believe that the year is half over and I need to make more Christmas Cards:)...did I just say that word?  I had my jolt juice(lidocaine infusion) On Tuesday and was a bit stoned for the day but it helps with my pain. This week, over at Wandering Through The Shelves,  it s tv time and it’s all about crime shows. Let’s see what I have chosen...

1. CSI-2000-2015

This has spawned so many other CSI shows that I thought there would be a CSI Wainfleet...where I grew up, but the only crimes they may find is which hog slept with which cow, anyways, this was quite a good show before it became too full of itself. I liked the original show(in Las Vegas) that started off with the crime and then we see the forensic experts come in, take the evidence, the “Vic”, (my mom hated that term and thought it was disrespectful to the victim...she was right) and within 24-48 hours, they solve the crime. Never mind that nothing happens that fast, that the forensic people, would Never interview the suspects, never mind that it would take months to get all that DNA evidence. Regardless, I enjoyed this one and CSI: New York because I really like Gary Sinese. I watched the Miami one but I always laughed at Carrot top, aka, David Caruso, trying to be cool by saying some quip and then taking his sunglasses off.

2. CASTLE-2009-2016

This is one show I really enjoyed about a famous writer of crime mysteries who works with a police dept after one of the crimes seems to follow one of his novels. The problem is that the author won’t leave and is able to stick around and follow, help and often solve many of the crimes. One of the main reasons is not only his love of crime but his hots for the lead detective. It is often done in a comedic way but there were plenty of times where drama came in especially concerning the murder of the lead detective’s mother. Apparently, the 2 leads disliked each other but it only showed as snappy foreplay and the show didn’t suffer even after the 2 marry.

3.  UNFORGOTTEN-2016-PRESENT

This is a British series that my hubby and I found on PBS mysteries and it is well worth a look. It runs about 8 or so episodes starting off where a skeleton is found. The team, lead by boss, Nicola Walker, is brought in to deal, specifically, with cold cases. We see how they find out who the victim is and soon there are 4 suspects that could have committed the crime. We not only see how the detectives try to solve the case but we follow the boss's life, her right hand man and the lives of the 4 suspects. We become involved in their lives and feel for the victim and their family that must endure the pain of finally knowing what has happened. The last one we watched was chilling to say the least. I can’t wait to see more.

Sorry Colombo..anyhoo, which 3 would you choose?

  1. Hi, Birgit!

I hope you are cruisin' pain free or close to it today, dear friend! Thanks for planting the image in my head of a hog sleeping with a cow. :) TV in general and crime series in particular are two of my stronger suits. Mrs. Shady and I have been working our way through reruns of CSI-Vegas for the last year or so. We have reached the Ted Danson - Elisabeth Shue years (2011-2015). Like you, I was most fond of the series during the early Gil Grissom era (Willian Petersen), but I think the show has remained consistently enjoyable season after season and the main characters exceptionally well played by the revolving door cast of actors and actresses. Remember Modern Family's Eric Stonestreet in the role of CSI lab tech Ronnie Litre in seasons 1 through 5? I agree that real forensics experts do not interview suspects, nor do they rush into dark houses with guns drawn as you sometimes see them do on CSI. Rumor has it that Carrot Top aka David Caruso of CSI:Miami is so cool that he wears his sunglasses at night. :)

I am drawing a blank on Castle, never saw it, but I am very interested in telling Mrs. Shady about Unforgotten. We both loved Nicola Walker in the British series Last Tango in Halifax, and I am ecited to see her starring in this crime drama which brings to mind two of our other favorites The Closer and Major Crimes. To that list I will add Monk and Psych.

    Thanks, dear friend BB!

  2. I haven’t seen any of these, but Castle sounds good, as does Unforgotten. My preferences run to British shows, though many years ago I was fond of Cagney And Lacey. But these days I enjoy Father Brown and Midsomer Murders. You do have to watch them from the start, especially Midsomer Murders, or you miss some detail that later becomes important. Oh, and Agatha Raisin is great fun! She is a retired PR agent who sells the business and moves to the Cotswolds, where there seem to be as many murders as in Midsomer. She is a delightfully flawed character. The first murder she solved was one she had to do to get herself out of trouble, as she had cheated in a baking competition and the judge dropped dead...

    1. I like the British shows as well. There is something about them that makes me think they are above average from what Hollywood does

  3. Unforgotten sounds really interesting, I'll have to see when that's on. It sounds like something I'd enjoy. I'm familiar with your first two picks but I never watched them myself.

  4. Crime shows are my favorite genre. You picked three that I have seen every episode of. (poor construction of a sentence, lol) I am still watching NCIS even with all the cast changes. And enjoying the new show The Code, about the Marines and court martials.

    1. Yeah to all 3! I am aok with poor sentence construction since I do this often too. I like Mark Harmon but I never watched NCIS and wouldn't mind watching the series which is still going after 15 seasons??

  5. I like CSI, even though I didn't watch it regularly. I know the others but I can't say I've watched them much either. I also liked Law and Order, Monk and the original Hawaii Five O. I can actually think of some this week. Smile. Happy Thursday. Hugs-Erika

    1. I almost chose law & Order which has many spin offs like CSI. Monk is excellent and I love the original Hawaii Five O

  6. I LOVED Castle! Especially the initial seasons and adored Susan Sullivan as Castle's mother. Fun and clever but not too clever. I was sorry to hear Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic didn't get along but at least they were professional enough to not let it show.

I've watched an episode or two of all the various CSI shows but none stuck, not even the Gary Sinise one and I'm a big fan of his as well.

Unforgotten is a new one to me but I'm intrigued.

As is my custom I reached back to some favorites. Two have attempted restarts one successfully the other with an enormous thud.

Hawaii Five-O (1968-1980)-Captain of detectives Steve McGarrett (Jack Lord) is appointed by the Governor as head of a special squad of state police officers, young Danny “Dan-O” Williams (James MacArthur), veteran Chin Ho Kelly and streetwise Kono Kalakaua to battle a seemingly endless chain of international spies, petty thieves, murders and common criminals who descend on the Big Island for nefarious purposes. All introduced by the jazzy iconic theme song. Relaunched in a not bad reboot in 2010.

Ironside (1967-1975)-San Francisco Police Department Chief of Detectives Robert Ironside (Raymond Burr), is forced to retire from the department after a sniper's bullet paralyzes him from the waist down leaving him wheelchair bound. Appointed a "special department consultant" with a team of four police investigators under his command and depending on brains and initiative they solved crimes for eight years under Ironside’s gruff but intelligent and caring leadership. Burr’s strong presence makes the series stand out which became even more obvious when a lackluster reboot limped along for a few episodes a couple of years ago.

Streets of San Francisco (1972-1977)-Filmed on location in the city by the bay veteran police inspector Lt. Mike Stone (Karl Malden) is partnered with a young rookie plainclothes detective Assistant Inspector Steve Keller (a very young Michael Douglas) hunted down various criminals, often involved in murderous activities, for five seasons. Strengthened by the extremely strong rapport between Malden & Douglas, who left the series in its final year to produce One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

    1. I'm glad you are also a lover of Castle and I love his mother who is just perfect. I hope you get to see Unforgotten...great series. Love all 3 of your picks. The original Hawaii Five O is an excellent show that was one for 14 years, I think. Jack Lord was perfect. Ironside was a quirky series because he was in the wheelchair but it was a great show that never should have been remade. The Sheets of San Francisco..oops that's porn. Yes, The Streets was another great 70's crime show that was not pretty just like Kojack. I enjoyed this show and was sad when Michael Douglas left the show.

  7. OMGOSH, Birgit. You will NOT believe this. I have seen ALL three if these series. I agree with you on CSI, and, although I watched, I lost interest in it when Peterson left the show. It just wasn't the same after that. Had to laugh at your description of carrot top and his sunglasses.

I LOVED and I mean LOVED Castle. From everything I've read, Nathan Fillion is the nicest man around. One time he and his crew were shooting a scene that disrupted some event (the show was actually filmed in LA, but I bet you knew that) and he made it up to the people at the event by doing something, although I don't remember what it was anymore. I adore him in The Rookie, too. He's a true gem. Too bad he and Stana Katic didn't get along. I had NO idea.

There have been three seasons of Forgotten. In the last episode of Season 3, Nicola Walker leaves the job. I keep wondering if she will return or if she has left the show permanently.

I can think of others, too. Of course, my favorite is NCIS, which has spawned two more series. I watch NCIS: NOLA religiously, but have lost interest in NCIS: LA.

Lesser known, and only showing for one season was Forever, a story about an immortal medical examiner (Ioan Gruffudd) who, along with an NYPD detective (Alana de la Garza) solve crimes. Fantasy and crime apparently don't mix, since ABC canceled the show after one season.

Speaking of PBS, Grantchester is high on my list of favorites. We're into season 5 and a new Vicar this season.

Another PBS show I absolutely won't miss is Endeavour. It's Morse before he got old and crotchety. But Endeavour is starting to get that way in this latest season.

I guess you can tell where my interests lie, can't you. I've NEVER known so many of the shows you and others have talked about this morning. I'm just thrilled I am finally able to actually contribute something for a change. If it's mystery, it's MY thing!

    1. yeah!!! I am so glad you have seen all 3. I am with you on Castle which I loved especially the 2 character cops...they were gold. I stopped watching when Petersen left too because he made it more human and not so Hollywood. Nicola is coming back! I read that somewhere because I had to know:) Wasn't that last season horrifying the way the actor, who played the killer, talked about his killing as if he is talking about the weather? I loved Forever and was very upset when they cancelled the show. It was quirky but unique. I never watched NCIS even though it has been on for 15 season, I think. I have not seen Endeavor or Grantchester so there is a first as well! You have seen something that I have not. I have to check it out

    2. Grantchester is on right now and you can catch all this season at PBS.org. If you are a member of PBS with a Passport, you can catch all five seasons and also all but the first two seasons of Endeavor. However, I found the first two seasons of Endeavor on Youtube.

    3. Forgot to say, thanks for letting me know about Nicola. The show wouldn't be the same without her.

I guess I should have said Grantchester is on Sunday nights on PBS.

  9. I haven't watched Castle but I heard their two costars loathed each other. To make matters worse, I heard the writers made them get married.

    LOL

  10. I have CSI on my list too! I didn't watch the later seasons, but I really enjoyed the early seasons. Unforgotten sounds like an interesting series!

  11. My wife loves Castle and every version of CSI - Vegas, Miami, Over Yonder, wherever they set one she'll watch it. Sometimes I watched with her, sometimes not so I've seen plenty of both.

  12. I thought Castle would be an interesting one to watch but could never remember when it was on so didn't ever see it. My all-time favorite is "Monk". Also liked "Psych" and the first few seasons of "Elementary".

  13. I absolutely LOVED Unforgotten. Nicola Walker is so good in it, too. I binge-watched all the seasons then got annoyed when it ended. I haven't tried Castle yet. Right now I'm watching Spanish Netflix since I'm in Peru. It's my fun way to learn Spanish lol.

  14. I LOVED Castle. I've even read a couple of the books.

  15. BIRGIT ~
'Crime' - especially when it comes to TV - isn't one of my wheelhouse genres. In fact, off the top of my noggin, I can only think of four shows that qualify which I really like:

    1) MOONLIGHTING - Hands down my favorite in this genre.

    2) Batman - 1966 / '67 Old School version with "Pow!", "Biff!" and "Zap!"

    3) Get Smart - "Would you believe..." it was truly classic TV. "This is KAOS! We don't makes lists here!"

    4) Columbo - I think Lt. Columbo was one of the all-time greatest TV characters.

Well, that's it for me. I can't even think of any others I really like. And I haven't seen any of the current crop, as I don't even have TV service.

  16. Of all the CSI's, my favorite was New York, mostly because of the cast: Gary Sinise, Melina Kanakaredes, Carmine Giovinazzo, Hill Harper, Anna Belknap, and later Sela Ward. All are actors that I liked on other shows, so that had a lot to do with it.

Mary and I still watch "Columbo" on the weekends, and are continually amazed at just how good the writing was on it. Peter Falk was tremendous as Lt. Columbo and really brought that character to life. I can't imagine anyone else playing him.

"Perry Mason," while a lawyer show, still had plenty of police work on it, and showed it from a different angle, that of the defense attorney using his own detective and building the case for the defense.

Of course, there are the Mark VII productions like "Dragnet" (the old and new ones) and "Adam-12." Just shows about cops doing their jobs, and presented with a sense of humor. Jack Webb had tremendous respect and admiration for the men and women upholding the law.

The first several seasons of "NCIS" were more stories about Navy cops investigating crimes involving crimes involving sailors and Marines. At some point, it retreatedd from the day-to-day investigations and focused more on the war on terror, sometimes having little to do with crimes committed by or against Navy and Marine personnel.

And I'm with Stephen on "Batman."

  17. Has anyone ever seen a show - long gone! - called Pulaski? The hero is an American actor filming a crime series in England, in which he plays as an American detective working in England. So his fans keep assuming he IS a detective and asking him to solve crimes... very funny, over the top.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I saw a few early episodes of CSI but don't watch a lot of TV so am unfamiliar with the other programmes.

Lidocaine infusion, would you email me about this.

  19. Crime is just my bag Brigit, and I do like CSI, and just wish that in reality crime could be cleared up so quickly and efficiently as they do it.
Forgotten was a fabulous series too. I love the old fashioned who done it's that we make over here, like the Agatha Christie stories, however I adore Columbo, Kate x

  20. If you’re Scottish you have to say Taggart.

  21. Castle is a fun one indeed. Psych and Monk would be added to my list. Sure no shortage of rime shows. CSI went downhill after Grissom left. And MR. So Cool sunglasses can't stand him.

  22. Oh, CSI. I haven't seen an episode in ages, but back in the day I watched all different versions of the show.

  24. I can't speak highly enough about Boomtown, a kind of mosaic crime series, that got to shine gloriously for one season (2002-2003) and then returned for a truncated second season intended for easier consumption. Brilliant cast. You can thank Donnie Wahlberg's casting in Blue Bloods to Boomtown.

  25. There's a dog in my neighborhood named Richard Castle. The owner always calls him Castle. I thought, maybe... And then one day she was angry at him and used his full name. Another fan of the show, I'm sure.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm not familiar with Unforgotten.
Love Liz A.'s story about the neighborhood dog. Heh.
    Stay cool.

  27. I used to watch a few of the CSI series. At first it was sort of cool, they had these effects (not sure how to describe) where they like zoom into an evidence quickly. But everything got old quickly and I stopped watching. Yes the depiction of crime scene and forensics people were very laughable and so was the length of time it took to process evidence and do all those tests. I also agree with what you said about CSI Miami. I liked it the least out of the franchise - Caruso was soo cheesy at being broody.
