Thursday Movie Picks: Seven Deadly Sins-Sloth

I am still getting used to this new format but at least I can write this on my IPad now. It's the next one from the Seven Deadly Sins which is sloth. I had a hard time with this one because i know I watched many films where there was some lazy oaf in the film but i could not come up with them. I know The Big Lebowski will be popular today so I am not choosing that one plus I have not seen the whole film yet. I almost chose Virginia Mayo from White Heat because I love that she lays around and, at one point, she is snoring but she is also a two timer and maybe she doesn't quite fit. I hope the 3 I chose do fit. Check out Wandering Through The Shelves to see what other films have been chosen.

1. GONE WITH THE WIND-1939

This is still the biggest money maker ever when you convert the dollars it made to today's dollars. It is an epic film even though it glorifies the South but that takes a back seat to Scarlett and her scheming ways to nab dumbnut Ashley Wilkes away from boring Melanie Wilkes despite them marrying..talk about kissing cousins. Scarlet manipulates men except for one, good ole Rhett Butler who loves her despite the fact that she is a double B-beautiful bitch. Scarlet always goes back to Tara-her home and land that is a part of her. So where is the lazy coming in? This comes in the form of Miss. Prissy, the house slave who don't know nuttin' 'bout birthin no babies. She really knows how to be a dog F#$!  meaning she does as little as possible but gets slapped in the process. The wonderful Butterfly McQueen stole the scenes that she was in with her acting and high pitched voice. She was an endearing soul that hated to be typecast and quietly left Hollywood going back to college living in her little cottage before passing away at 84.

2. RETURN OF THE JEDI-1983

Pizza the Hut..er, I mean Jabba The Hut was only in this film at the beginning but he was memorable as a hugely, obese slug who chained up Carrie Fisher in her skimpy outfit where her boobs popped out so frequently, the men would just tell her she was popped out again. Every boy and man slobbered like Jabba seeing Carrie in that outfit. This slug really could not move much and was an evil slimy thing happy to have Han Solo frozen in that slab of whatever. Of course, Luke saves everyone but not before almost dying in the dunes fighting off a number of beasts with the help of Leia(still in her outfit), Han(now unfrozen), Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian, played by suave and handsome, Billy Dee Williams. The rest of the film has Luke fighting Daddy Dearest while the others are trying to stop the evil empire with the help of those irritating little shits called the Ewoks who overpower sophisticated machines using their rocks and vines...OK.

3. OFFICE SPACE-1999

3 friends work in an office for a scumbag boss along with some weirdos including a guy who probably would love to blow up something if he doesn't get his red stapler back. The friends must contend with a printer that never works properly(we have all been there) until they take it out and slam the hell out of it. When the Bobs come to revamp the company and make it more efficient aka-firing a bunch of people, Peter decides to show up without dress protocol and just says what is on his mind. Instead of being fired, he is promoted and Peter decides to do F-All and be the biggest slacker ever. His 2 friends are fired so the 3 of them hatch a plan to take out a few pennies from the company they work for but it doesn't go as planned. This is a very funny film about the frustrations of working in an office job and the dream of wanting to slack when you are unappreciated.

I hope these 3 fit...which would you choose?

  1. Frankly, my dear...

    Hi, Birgit!

I appreciate Butterfly McQueen's acting in Gone With the Wind. Diahann Carroll starring as TV's Julia was still light years away. Thanks for using my Pizza the Hut quip from way back. Perhaps Jabba was the inspiration for Fat Bastard, the morbidly obese Scottish villain in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and Austin Powers in Goldmember. Office Space is my kinda movie. John C. McGinley from Scrubs plays the same type of character in several if not all of his projects. You simply must see him starring in Stan Against Evil.

Stay well, dear friend BB, and come down and see me sometime!

    1. I have seen Stan Against Evil and find it very funny but don’t remember him but I have only seen it a couple of times before I couldn’t find it again. Diahann Carroll was way ahead which is so sad considering it was the 1960s. Office Space is so funny and I love that opening scene.

    1. I’m glad you like GWTW which is a bit out of favour nowadays. Vivian Leigh was not only beautiful but a great actress. I miss stamping

  5. Jabba the Hutt fits so well! I would have never thought of Gone with the Wind though.

  6. LOVE that you thought of GWTW and Prissy!! That is such a perfect example of sloth! Love that film.

Jabba was probably conceived by the word sloth and Office Space is another great example.

You did so much better than I with finding choices. This one puzzled me I have to admit but ultimately I struck on one example and with some digging (and watching, I just saw all three of these within the last few days) was able to turn him into a theme within the theme.

Rip Van Winkle (1896)-A series of shorts pieced together that tell the Washington Irving tale of layabout Rip Van Winkle (Joseph Jefferson-a star of the stage before during and after the Civil War who spent his later career touring endlessly in this play) who ambles into the Catskills and wakes up 20 years later having slept through the American Revolution! The narrative is choppy but how many films survive from before the turn of the last century?

The Legend of Rip Van Winkle (1905)-Another short-14 minutes. Probably the most innovative version of the Irving classic taking into account the age of the film and what it sets out to do. French film pioneer Georges Méliès (who also plays the lead) uses movable sets and color to set the scene though without title cards it's hard to follow if you're not familiar with the story.

Rip Van Winkle (1914)-This version at 58 minutes follows the story after Rip (played by Thomas Jefferson-son of Joseph Jefferson) awakens from his slumber and reacquaints himself with the world that passed him by include getting to know his daughter Meenie (played by Jefferson’s wife Daisy Jefferson) as well.

    1. I am a few days late, obviously but I must watch your choices. I have seen a bit of the Melies film as I love him! I didn’t think they made a narrative film back in 1896 so I have to see this. I will look for these on YouTube. I’m glad you like my choices

  8. Birgit,

"Gone with the Wind" is such a classic film. I was trying to think of a film with a bum. At first, I drew a blank but then I remembered the scene in "Trading Places" where Eddie Murphy tried to con folks out of a few bucks posing as a disabled Vietnam vet. That's what you call lazy! Great film, too. Your commentary on your movie picks always make me smile with today being no exception your comments about Carrie Fisher made me grin ear to ear. lol Thanks for sharing and for visiting today. I hope you're doing alright, staying safe and healthy, my dear! xx

    1. I am glad you enjoyed reading my synopsis on these films. I remember Carrie Fisher laughing that the guys would tell her as if they were so bored with this happening since it was constant.

  9. This seems like a tough category. Nothing initially came to my mind and even your picks I would not likely have thought of, but I've only seen GWTW of those picks.

After thinking a while longer I came up with the Pixar film Wall-E. The image of the fat lazy humans being waited upon by robots seems pretty slothful.

I'm sure there are plenty of others, but they evade me at the moment.

    1. WALL-E is inspired! I have seen parts of the film and remember how lazy these humans are...very true actually.

  10. Ah, Office Space... That movie has some great bits. Jabba the Hut is a good one, too. I don't know what I would have picked. Nothing immediately comes to mind.

  11. Jabba is a good choice. Me? I got nuthin'. I didn't even think of Jabba.

  12. I saw GWTW when I was five, but don't remember Prissy. I don't really remember much about the film, but they were having a revival weekend and my grandmother wanted to see it again, so she took me. However, I was at an African American museum and saw Hattie McDaniel, who played Mammy won the best supporting actor award. She was the first black woman to win an award, if I remember correctly.

I saw Jabba the Hut and laughed at your synopsis. I've not seen the other one, though.

    1. It is a good film even though it is a long one. Hattie McDaniel was the first African American to win the Oscar and her acceptance speech is humble to sweet

  13. I should have said there was a big display of Hattie McDaniel. Lots of photos and lots of info. I think I made it sound like I met her, but I'm sure she died before I was born.

    1. No, I know what you meant as she died in 1952 of breast cancer. Her Oscar has been missing for 50 years and would be a real find if it is rediscovered.

  14. I've lost count of the number of times my mother dragged me to see Gone With The Wind. I didn't know that about Butterfly McQueen. More great info.

    1. Hahahaa. It’s not one of my favourite films and it sucks at how the South is considered so holy but that was the thinking of the author and that time. When you think about it, there were civil war vets around since it was 74 years since the end of that war. It is 75 years since the 2nd World War ended.

  15. Office Space is such a great movie indeed. Seen all three. Fat Thor count? lol he came to mind.

  16. Office Space came to my mind, too. How about Billy Madison, Grandma's Boy, and The House Bunny? The main characters began as sloths, eventually achieving something worthwhile.
In a way, Scarlett was a sloth. She had no ambition until her home was taken away.

    1. I have not seen you choices but I bet they work. Scarlett could work as she was never supposed to do manual labour which is how Rhett knew she was lying when she visited him in that dress she saw in the window

  18. Carrie Fisher was such a babe and her costumes were wild, some on my blog. I know I deviate and it was in episode VI not the Jedi but it was fitting, to see Vader chuck the emperor over the rails down the reactor duct, so much for the power of the dark side!

  19. I love Office Space, want to rewatch it one of these days.
