weekly Song Challenge

It's strange writing these ahead of time but I am trying to be pro-active since i am unsure how i will be feeling after my surgery since I take longer to heal due to my connective tissue disorder. Jingle, Jangle, Jungle came up with 3 more great themes this week and here they are:

A SONG WITH A GIRL'S NAME IN THE TITLE

A SONG WITH THE WORD "UNDER" IN THE TITLE

A SONG WITH THE WORD "CRY" IN THE TITLE

1.  BARBARA ALLEN SUNG BY ART GUNFUNKEL-1973

It is a Scottish ballad from the 16th century that took hold all over Britain and one hears it in many older English films like "A Christmas Carol". I always loved this song even though it is a sad song but it seems to have a wistful, dreamy and very pretty tune. I wanted to find a good rendition of this song and someone, long ago, who owned a classical record store, suggested this version by Art Garfunkel. I bought the CD and am so happy I did because I love Simon and Gunfunkel and always took to Garfunkel more. I think he does the best rendition.

2. UNDER THE BOARDWALK SUNG BY  THE DRIFTERS-1964

This is the first song that popped into my head and I always loved it for the great vocals. It came out in 1964, my birth year, so it must be great :) This song was written by Kenny Young and Arthur Resnick (I don't know who they are but ok) and I love all the nice nuances they put into the song plus I just love the lead singer's voice, Johnny Moore.

3. CRYING SUNG BY ROY ORBISON-1961

I know it is Crying and not Cry but this still fits, I think, and it was the first song that came into my little head. It's cool that it came out in 1961 when my brother was born. I know K. D. Lang did a great homage to this song, but it will always be Roy Orbison's song which he co-wrote with Joe Melson. It is brilliant.

So any songs you can think of?

  1. Hi, Birgit!

Knowing that you composed this WSC post ahead of time, I am eager to read a more recent update on your recovery. I've been thinking about you every day and wondering how things are going. I hope you are resting and healing properly. You are in my prayers, dear friend.

Great song picks, BB! I haven's heard Garfunkel's "Barbara Allen" in decades. In the fall of 1973, the time of the song's release on Art's debut (and most successful) album Angel Clare, I was working with a woman named Barbara Allen and always connected her to the song. "Under The Boardwalk" is one of my favorite songs. It resonates because my family traveled to the seashore on vacation almost every year when I was a boy, and I continued to do so as a young adult. I loved to go under the boardwalk to take a break from the burning sun. Now I live an hour away from the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico but rarely visit either coast. Roy Orbison gave us many sad but beautiful ballads and "Crying" is one of them.

    Here are my picks:

GIRL NAME SONG: "Honolulu Lulu" by Jan And Dean, a top 10 single for the surf rock duo in the fall of 1963, one month before the JFK assassination.

UNDER SONG: "Over Under Sideways Down" by The Yardbirds, a top 10 hit for the British psychedelic blues rock band in the summer of 1966.

CRY SONG: How about "Cry." Does that count? :) The song was famously recorded by Johnny Ray & The Four Lads, Ronnie Dove, Lynn Anderson and Crystal Gayle. Johnnie Ray had the biggest hit with the ditty, topping the chart for 8 straight weeks in February and March of 1952. The fab flip side, "The Little White Cloud That Cried," was also a major hit, and I earn double "Cry" points for mentioning it.

You are "always on my mind" (another song title), dear friend BB. I hope to hear from you soon. If you post tamale, I'll see you in the balcony "At The Movies!"

  2. I sure hope you are recovering with minimal pain and discomfort. I am not familiar with any of your songs this week. Here are my choices:

Laura - the song lyrics are not sung in the movie Laura. They were penned by Johnny Mercer after the movie came out. Here is the Johnny Mathis version. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSV6o6R6Rpo

I've Got You Under My Skin - sung here by Frank Sinatra https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1AHec7sfZ8

    Cry by Johnny Ray https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FO07LN72ek

And there you have three of my favorite male singers, too.

  3. Under the Boardwalk is a classic.
I'll say Under a Soil and Black Stone by Amorphis.

  4. You picked some good ones. I haven't heard that Garfunkel one, or if I have, I'm not putting the name to it. Hope you are well. Hugs-Erika

  5. "Crying" is perfectly all right (because I did it, too). Nice picks! How are you feeling?

  6. "Crying" is such a beautiful song. I like the sequence in the film Mulholland Drive that uses this song.

I've heard that folk ballad throughout my life. I don't know that I'd heard Art's version before, but he interpreted it well.

  7. Hey Birgit,

How are you doing with the healing? I guess you're home now, moving around like granny Moses. That's how it felt to me every time I had abdominal surgery. Now that I have all of that stuff gone except for one ovary, hopefully I won't have to go down that road again. I don't how things are done today but I remember when I was young girl I had multiple ovarian cysts removed which resulted in a bikini line incision. The nurses encouraged me to do a lot of coughing as it supposedly helped with healing. I don't know understand but that's what they told me, so every time I had this sort of procedure I would force coughs. I recall how painful it was if I got tickled which happens. The first time around DH & I were dating. He brought a college room mate to see me in the hospital. This fella is hilarious. He kept cranking out the funnies things and I had to beg him to stop it because it hurt so much but it was fun. I hope you're doing better.

Your song picks are great. It's interesting, I don't think I can recall any songs with Art Garfunkel singing. Surely I have heard other songs, right? I'm going to YT in a little to sample more of his songs. I enjoyed the Scottish ballad. "Under the Boardwalk" is a fabulous feel good tune that makes me think of summer. Roy Orbison has such a unique voice. It's hard to believe "Crying" is 60 years old. It released in August 1961 and hit #2 in the US. That song is really an oldie but please don't call me that when I turn 60 in December. lol

Thanks for dropping by yesterday, dearie. Have a good week and take it super easy!

  8. I've never hard the Garfunkel song before, and had no idea he did any solo work. I've definitely heard the other two, though. Crying was so sad and Orbison did it well.
