Janus, The God, now looks to the future

I am writing this on Sunday when it is a balmy -17 and we are supposed to get quite the snowstorm. We shall see if this happens because it often misses us. I took this picture of our tree, last year, after an ice storm and it fits for January. Janus is the god with 2 faces, one that looks behind and the other face that looks forward. I wrote about the past/memories so now we will look forward so here are my 3 songs that, I think, fit.

1. HERE COMES THE SUN BY THE BEATLES-1969

This song is written by my favourite Beatle, George Harrison when he was at his friend's home which happened to be Eric Clapton. I guess, George was dealing with some personal issues and he wrote this which, I think, is quite a hopeful song and one we all need.

2. SHADAROBA BY ROY ORBISON-1963

This song sounds melancholy but, to me, it is the opposite because he sings this that when you are down and out you need to pick yourself up and carry on towards the future. I think that is what Shadaroba might mean since I did look it up on the web. Mainly it is Future oriented and hopeful so I shall go by that. This song was actually written by Cindy Walker who wrote many songs and was a singer herself in the country music world.

3. HOPE FOR THE FUTURE BY PAUL MCCARTNEY-2014

This song was actually written for a video game! I had no idea but when roaming for songs, I came across this and thought it sounded pretty damn good and it fit the bill. Sir Paulie still knows how to be creative.

What songs can you think of?

Soooo....just to let you know, my city was one of the worst hit with 50 cm of snow which is 1.68 ft of snow! Here are some pics...

  1. Hi, Birgit!

Wow, dear friend, you guys really did get socked by Old Man Winter! Thanks for posting those awesome pictures to prove it. I hope you left a trail of bread crumbs so that you could find your way back to the house in that whiteout. I know you're gonna kill me for saying it, but I envy you. I haven't experienced a significant snowstorm like yours since the early 1980s and I miss them. Meanwhile, it's dang windy and chilly all the way down here in Florida, so I can imagine the biting cold in your neck of the woods.

I like your music theme of the week. "Here Comes The Sun" is one of my favorite Beatles songs. I never tire of listening to it. Like you, I very much appreciate the songs written and recorded by George Harrison.

"Shadaroba means the future is much better than the past," according to the lyrics of that Roy Orbison song. Roy was not an artist I paid much attention to when I was young, and therefore I am hearing this great song for the first time this morning. I suppose, when I was young, Roy seemed like an old school crooner to me, and I was more in the mood for flashy rock & roll artists and bands. In recent years I have developed into a big fan of Roy.

McCartney's "Hope For The Future" is a great and powerful song. So was the 1969 hit song by the 5th Dimension reporting that this is "the dawning of the Age of Aquarius," and so was "there's a New World Coming," the 1970 hit single by Mama Cass, and so was "A Change is Gonna Come," the 1964 Civil Rights anthem by Sam Cooke. Yessum, we need hope that people and circumstances will be better in the future, but I must admit that my hope is starting to fade.

In addition to those songs I just named, I will add the following:

"(I love you) More Today Than Yesterday (but not as much as tomorrow)," a 1969 hit for Spiral Staircase.

"Past, Present and Future," a 1966 single and fan favorite by The Shangri-Las.

"Shape of Things to Come," a hit single by the fictional rock band Max Frost And The Troopers from the 1968 exploitation movie Wild In The Streets which featured the delightfully unlikable Shelley Winters. The song is based on sci-fi writer H.G. Wells' future history of the same name.

Thanks for the musical entertainment, dear friend BB. Keep warm, stay indoors and drink a toddy, binge watch vintage flicks, and I'll see you tamale in the balcony "At the Movies!"

    1. Yes, we got quite a bit of snow and wait until you see what the city did to us! I am glad you liked my picks and hope you listen more to Roy Orbison. I listened to your choices and enjoyed the first and 3rd one but not feeling it for the Shangri-La's and Beethoven. Leave it to Shelley Winters being in a flick like this.

  2. That is some serious snow. If you hadn't told me that was your car underneath all that snow, I never would've known. We're supposed to see several inches this weekend, but I'll believe it when I see it.

  4. I live in southeast Michigan. We've had only about two inches of snow all season. Maybe its because we were drowning in rain all summer. I never even hooked up the outside hoses.

    1. We did have quite a bit of rain until late August when it got really hot and dry.

  5. Good pics of the storm! We got almost as much as you did. Pretty unusual for these parts. Last time it happened, the mayor of Toronto (Mel Lastman) called in the army! Do you remember that, Birgit? ☺

A nice selection of hopeful tunes! I don't remember Shadaroba, but it's lovely! ♥ My choice in this category is from another former Beatle, John Lennon. ♫Imagine all the people, Living life in peace♫

  6. Sorry about the snow? That looks like a lot. I hope you're having some fun with it, anyway. Spring isn't really all that long from now, I think. Sending you warming thoughts. (I won't tell you today's temperatures here.)

  7. Omg, you have some snow there! Mind is a blank about future songs, but I do love Roy Orbison. Left us far too soon.

  10. Birgit,

Excellent theme this week. I can't seem to get into the game of coming up with themes for mid-week. I think Mary has plans to return to this series, though. Y'all sure did get the snow. We got almost 2-feet with the blizzard of '93. That was enough for me for a lifetime. I can't even imagine living in a place that get that kind of snowfalls frequently in the winter. Do stay safe and warm, my dear!
