I don’t watch American Idol or The Voice so I am sticking with musicals and I will not pick Cop Rock even though, yes, I watched this show. I am choosing 3 shows that, I think, I have not chosen before but, I could be wrong...oh well. One has to choose 3 shows that correspond with the theme so it will be fun to see what the others have chosen this week. Head on over to Wandering Through The Shelves and find out. Here are my 3...
1. THE JUDY GARLAND SHOW-1963-1964
I love Judy Garland even though she could be a handful as many who worked on her show could attest but these shows are gems. I was so thankful to see all the episodes on PBS who aired them one year and, even though she did some skits and it could be classified as a variety show, her music was much more prominent with a special dedicated to JFK when he passed away. She got her way and sang the Battle Hymn of the Republic dedicated to his memory on her show.
2. THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY-1970-1974
This show catapulted David Cassidy to mega stardom which he couldn’t truly cope with, dying of alcoholism ( his dad suffered from this as well) a couple of years ago. Shirley Jones( David’s step-mom) was the matriarch of a very musical family as all her kids could sing and play an instrument, even the little girl who boogied with a tambourine. The red-haired ugly kid, played by Danny Bonaduce, got the better of their manager. Whatever happened in the half hour, we were always treated to some song by the group and, once, a beautiful song sung by the wonderful Shirley Jones.
3. SMASH-2012-2013
I think I chose this before but I don’t care because I really liked this series and thought it deserved better. It’s all about putting on a musical about Marilyn Monroe and we see it come about from the very beginning to its final ending on Broadway. In between we see how 2 of the main girls are vying for the top spot, the director being a narcissist, the producer, played by the great Angelica Huston always searching for money and the song writers, who love each other as friends, but still have their "ups and downs". Well acted and the story lines often seemed to mesh with what was going on ..onstage. It’s worth a look if you like this style, which I do.
What would you choose?
We watched The Partridge Family. Don't forget the beautiful Susan Dey who went on to star in L.A. Law.
ReplyDeleteI'd be hard pressed to come up with any other musical as I don't tend to like them. We do watch America's Got Talent though.
It is a tough one but America’s Got Talent fits. Susan Dey really did well on that show but then she disappeared again.

I only know the Partridge Family- and as a kid I was totally in love with that show. My family was just so boring compared to their lives. I used to watch American Idol but then that got to be old hat. Haven't seen it in years except for a couple of episodes this season because I only wanted to see a girl from New Hampshire perform to see what all the local hubbub was about. Happy Thursday. Hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteI only watched American Idol here and there. I did wish we had more jocularity in our life growing up like the Partridge family but at least we didn’t have a band which was a good thing:)
DeleteI watched a lot of musical variety shows over the years and still enjoy them (my post for the letter "V" today is Variety Shows.
ReplyDeleteA couple of fairly recent specials that impressed me on the Fox Entertainment network have been live before an audience versions of Jesus Christ Superstar and Rent--they did a heck of a job re-staging those.
I also used to enjoy shows such as Tom Jones and Sonny and Cher--they would present some innovative music acts. And I cannot forget about The Midnight Special--a show that I rarely missed.

I can’t wait to showcase the variety shows which I love like Your Show Of Shows, Sonny and Cher and the great Carol Burnett Show. I didn’t use them this time because I was showcasing music. I will be visiting your blog very shortly.
DeleteI haven’t seen any of these but It doesn’t surprise me considering how I feel about musicals
ReplyDeleteBummer as I love them
DeleteLoved the Judy Garland show when it ran. Did not care for the Partridges and never heard of Smash. I grew up with American Bandstand so that came to mind for me.
ReplyDeleteGlad you saw the Garland show and have no idea if you would like Smash. American Bandstand is a perfect choice
DeleteThe Partridge Family was a fun show, back in the day, but I haven't seen the other two. As a former "wanna be" singer, I love watching The Voice, American Idol et al. There's a Canadian one as well, called The Launch.
ReplyDeleteYes I know about the Launch but I am just not that into it. I could never have been a singer unless it was for cats and dogs
DeleteI have never seen any of these, but I wish I had seen Smash, because I LOVE Katherine McPhee. I didn't even know she could sing when I saw her on Scorpion, then I saw her on a special about dogs and adoption where she sang a couple of songs. I about fell over. Like you, I don't watch those Voice, Idol, etc., either, so I am definitely out of the loop.
ReplyDeleteI thought of GLEE when I saw this theme I'm definitely a Gleek at heart.
BTW, I had NO idea David Cassidy was dead. Shows how much I know.
Katherine McPhee was, I think, the winner on American Idol or she was a runner up. She is a great singer. Glee is a perfect choice for this week. Yes, David Cassidy died 2 years ago from acute alcoholism and it was so sad. I watched a documentary with him in it about wanting to make a record of his dad’s favourite songs he sang when his dad was on Broadway. You could see how he was trying to get his dad’s blessing even though his dad has been dead for over 40 years( passed out drunk with a lit cigarette and burned up).
DeleteI wanted to respond to your comment on my Saturday movie pick. Jerry Orbach was one of my favorite actors, and he was not only a fabulous actor and singer, he was excellent at pool. Several times during L&O, he played pool and the scenes weren't cut because he was able to make the shot the first time.
DeleteEven though I'm not into "chick flicks," I loved this movie, but mostly for the dancing and the music.
I guess you knew that Swayze was originally a ballet dancer. Neither he nor Gray liked each other, but when they auditioned together, apparently it was "magical." Gray hurt her neck while performing the lift, and has trouble to this day with it. Swayze got hurt while on the log, and had to be hospitalized for his knee (as I recall). When they started shooting, it was so hot, several actors passed out due to heat. By the time they wrapped up, as you pointed out, it was freezing cold, especially in that water scene.
I guess by now you know I have my original blog back.
ReplyDeleteYes and I am so sorry that you went through this hell. I was gone and only looked a bit but didn’t see anything until the other day so please forgive me. I’m so glad you have your blog back.
DeleteWatched the Patridge Family and also watched the Monkees. What can I say? I was of the generation that "idolized" them.
ReplyDeletebetty
I almost chose The Monkees and maybe I should have since Peter Tork passed away this year
DeleteI thought Smash had another season after that. I can't recall now. I did watch that.
ReplyDeleteWhen David Cassidy passed, I was shocked to learn his daughter was on one of the shows I currently watch. I never put together that the actress' last name is Cassidy. Duh! Should have been obvious. (I'm referring to Arrow. She's still a regular cast member, I believe.)
I know Smash was on for 2 seasons but I think it was a year and a half and ended at the end of the 2013. I had no idea his daughter was in Arrow...that’s nice to know
DeleteIf I see the Partridge Family is on, I still watch it! LOL...same for the Monkees or any of the old "live act" shows, like The Midnight Special.

Same here! In fact, I was watching fantasy island last week...what a cornball show but I watched it
DeleteYeah, The Monkees would probably be my #1 choice today.
ReplyDeleteI did watch The Midnight Special when I was a teenager in high school, and The Partridge Family before that. Had a crush on Susan Dey.

STMcC Presents BATTLE OF THE BANDS
The Monkees is great-dumb show but who cares. I think most boys had a crush on Susan Dey
DeleteHi Birgit - these aren't the sorts of shows I watch ... but I'm sure I've seen snippets of them over the years ... I certainly didn't know anything about Susan Dey - now I do ... cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteyeah, she was big back then...had a fling with her TV brother, David Cassidy and was also bulemic during that time
DeleteHi Birgit...sadly I never watch any of these music shows...more into cop and comedy myself...our weather has been beautiful over easter and lots of gardening has been done...and chocolate eaten....of course xxx
ReplyDeleteWe have had nothing but rain and cool weather but I am beginning to see buds on the trees
DeleteI liked the first season of Smash but lost interest in the second season. Can't recall why. Partridge Family was predicable but I watched it anyway. Danny was a hoot.
ReplyDeleteI think I've seen an episode or two of the Partridge Family but I didn't watch the other two. I need to go back and view some more of Judy Garland's work.
ReplyDeleteI've seen a few episodes of The Partridge Family. Galavant would get the #1 pick for me today. Just so random.
ReplyDeleteI have seen The Partridge Family- but not in a long time. I never even knew there was a Julie Garland Show- intriguing. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDelete~Jess
I know I'm DEFINITELY in the minority, but I hated The Partridge Family.
ReplyDeleteNot nearly as much as The Brady Bunch.
I'm not a musical or a TV fan, so TV musicals must be close to my definition of a living hell. Still, I remember watching Hee Haw with my parents (I'm sure it would not go over well today), along with the Smothers Brothers and the Tommy Hunter Show. Apparently, my parents were ALL about the musical TV. (Gag.)
ReplyDeleteBirgit,
ReplyDeleteThe Patridge Family was a big part of my childhood. That was a fun wholesome family show. I had a big crush on David Cassidy in those days, too. lol There were quite a few variety programs airing in the 70s that were staples in my viewing entertainment from those days, too. I never did watch the program with Katharine McPhee but I remember her from AI. She has a furtastic voice!
I think I've seen an episode or two of Smash. Didn't like it enough to keep watching.
