Weekly Song Challenge

March is almost done and we have not had any ice, fog or screwed up weather which is just weird. Anyhoo, This is week 11 created by Jingle, Jangle, Jungle and here are the 3 themes. I hope she continues this for the rest of the year. Here are the 3:

A TOY

A MONTH

A BOAT OR BOATING

1. OLD TOY TRAINS SUNG BY NANA MOUSKOURI-1967

Ok, I know, it's a Christmas song but this is the first thing that popped into my head and one that is on my Andre Rieu Christmas CD. I decided to go with Nana because she does have such a lovely voice and my mom loved her.

2. THE GIRL WITH APRIL IN HER EYES BY CHRIS DE BURGH-1979

I had not heard of Chris De Burgh until a friend in high school opened my ears and eyes to this great story teller/folk singer from Ireland. I have quite a few of his albums and they are all pretty damn good if you ask me. His most famous is the song "Lady In Red" which is not one of my favourites.

3. COME SAIL AWAY BY STYX-1977

I love this song  that has almost all real instruments rather than the fake stuff used nowadays. Anyhoo, I first heard this song when I was at Crystal Beach. This was a great amusement park that opened back in 1889, I believe and had the famous Comet roller coaster which was right beside Lake Erie. I never rode it but my brother did many times and still considers it one of the best roller coasters as do many other who rode the thing. I am too scared of heights so I never went on it but I loved the twirly rides (still do) and would ride this Blitzer or something like that. It always had the look of being in the snow and you sat in cars that were all connected. You would ride in a circle that went higher up in the back and lower at the front as it sped faster and faster with this song usually blaring. It was a lot of fun.

Which songs can you think up and would you still go on coasters or twirly rides because I would...I am a kid at heart.

  1. Hi, Birgit!

Thanks for revealing your song choices, dear friend. The first artist, Greek singer Nana Mouskouri, is new to me, and so is her cute toy song. (By the way, let me be the first to wish you a merry Christmas!)

I know Chris de Burgh because the music video for his hit "The Lady In Red," was played frequently on the MTV station where I worked in the 80s. I was not familiar with "The Girl With April In Her Eyes." Dr. Shady advises her to flush them gently with drops of Visine. Song #3 - I know the song and the artist. A top 10 hit early in 1978, "Come Sail Away" is a song of tremendous longevity, used in the soundtracks of numerous TV shows and films in the decades that followed.

I enjoyed your anecdote about Crystal Beach Amusement Park and its Comet roller coaster. The Blitzer ride you described sounds like what was called the Alpine or Polar Express that was a fixture on the midway at the York Interstate Fair. Rock music blasted from loudspeakers as connected cars raced in a circle on a slanted platform. I'm a Tilt-a-Whirl guy myself.

For my three, I'll go with the following:

TOY: "My Ding-a-Ling," a chart-topper for Chuck Berry in 1972.

MONTH: "First Of May" - the 1969 single by The Bee Gees, top 40 Billboard, top 20 Cash Box

BOAT: "Come On Down To My Boat" - a song that brushed the top 5 for the group Every Mother's Son in 1967.

Thanks for the musical entertainment, dear friend BB!

    1. I hope you like Nana a bit as she does have quite the pretty voice. Lady in Red is his biggest hit but there are others I much prefer. I’m glad you like Come Sail away even though it does not have the word Boat in it. You are right! The polar Express or some other name but that’s the ride and I too, love Tilt A’ Whirl. I love Ding A Ling which is such a good song and funny. I will listen to the other songs as I don’t know if I Know them

  6. Hi sis... been a while, I know! Off the top of my head, these are the songs that came quickly to mind: Toys in the Attic by Aerosmith, not really one of my favourites but the word "toys" is repeated so often, I guess it is seared in my brain; September by Willie Nelson, a gorgeous and poignant rendition of this standard, and; Dreamboat Annie by Heart. I was focusing specifically on the word "boat" and this is what popped into my head. I've always thought of it as a pretty song from an era when that band was still creative.

    1. I love that picture of you as I always feel I should genuflect😁. Toys in the Attic is popular this week. I have to listen to the other 2 when I get a chance. Glad to finally see you here...again.

  7. I was okay with twirly rides, but coasters terrified me. The one time I agreed to go on one, it was horrible. 1. Elvis and Teddy Bear 2. April Come She Will--Simon and Garfunkel 3. Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald--Gordon Lightfoot I recall that a lot of people hated this song, but it was a big hit. Besides, Gordon Lightfoot could sing anything and it would be good.

    Love,
    Janie

  8. That Irish story-song is magical, so beautiful too. And Styx is one of my old time favorites. Thanks for bringing it back. You have classy taste.
    Hugs.
