Weekly Song Challenge

Another week for songs and I always try to go by my first thought so it is, often eclectic, as I like to say. Jingle, Jangle, Jungle thought this weekly series up and she has the first half of the year figured out. The other half, she would like anybody's input so, if you wish to give your 2 cents worth, hop over to her blog and give your input and even join in:). Here is her list for this week:

1. A Parody

                        2. A song written for a girl

3. A Planet

1. WHITE & NERDY BY WEIRD AL YANKOVIC-2006

I find Weird Al weird and one I am not sure I want to know but man, is he intelligent the way he can create a parody from some famous songs. This one is a parody from "Ridin'" by Chamillionaire & Krayzie Bone(really? I bet their names are something like John and James). When I saw this video, I laughed so hard because it is truly nerdy and when Donnie Osmond shows up..I lost it. Too funny.

2. SWEET CAROLINE BY NEIL DIAMOND-1969

I always liked this song and then I heard who Caroline was....Caroline Kennedy who was something like 12 when he wrote this....ewwwwwwwwwww. Now, since then he mentioned he wrote the lyrics with his then-wife, Marcia in mind(no not Marcia Brady..ewwwwwww) but he needed 3 syllables  for the girl's name and Marcia didn't work. He recalled a sweet picture of Caroline Kennedy on a horse with her Parents standing next to the horse and thought it was sweet so...there you have it. I will think that is what he truly does mean..but still...ewwwww. I still like the song though.

3. JUPITER SYMPHONY BY MOZART-1788

Yeah, ok, it's not a song but it's the first thing that popped into my weird head so if you want to feel some culture and have time to kill, have a listen because it is a great piece of music and one of the best known. Actually it is Symphony # 41 and became known as the Jupiter symphony later...not much later but still, came after his death. Apparently, the use of the first chords reminded either Johann Cramer or Johann Salomon of Jupiter's thunderbolts. Jupiter is the Roman God (Zeus the Greek). I am a lover of classical music so this is why this popped into my head before any other, more recent, song.

Hope you enjoy today's song choices and would like to know which ones you would choose?

  1. Hi, Birgit!

I hope you're having a great week, dear friend. I like your picks for the song challenge. Weird Al is the king of parody songs and "White And Nerdy" is one of his best.

"Sweet Caroline" is one of my favorite Neil Diamond songs. It was a pleasant surprise to witness a clean Ed Sullivan introduction without the usual awkward stumbling. I wasn't aware of which "Caroline" the song was written for. ewwwwwwwwwww!

For my parody pick I'll name another great one by Weird Al - "I Lost On Jeopardy."

For the song written for a girl, I'm going with "Ruby Tuesday," the Rolling Stones hit penned by Egg MickJagger and Keith Richards. The song is about British fashion model Linda Keith, Richards's mid-60s girlfriend.

I never heard of Mozart's "Jupiter Symphony," but I'm going to use the same planet. My song pick is "Jupiter Child," the B side of the 1969 Steppenwolf single that had "Rock Me" pushed as the A side. Both songs became fan favorites.

Thanks for the entertainment, dear friend BB. See you "At The Movies!"

    1. I am in shock that you didn’t know why he named it Caroline. I feel, should I even admit, proud of myself that I knew something you didn’t. Don’t you love The Intro and you are right that Ed didn’t do his normal style. I love Ruby Tuesday and didn’t know it was named after his then girlfriend. I bet she didn’t think Keith would still be alive...heeeheeee. I am a classical nut so this is a top 10 hit of Mozart’s. Some symphonies are named but only after and by someone else usually. Another famous named symphony is the Pastoral Symphony or the 6th by Beethoven. I have to listen to this Steppenwolf song.

  3. After that one episode of the Big Bang Theory, I'll never listen to Sweet Caroline the same way again.
Weird Al is hilarious. My wife says she knows his songs better than the songs he parodies.

  4. Birgit,

Weird Al is the best ever! He is very creative with coming up with the right lyrics to fit the right song. White & Nerdy cracked me up! Cool backstory on "Sweet Caroline". I'm glad he wrote for his wife and not a young girl as that's really creepy but you never know who's a dirty old man/woman anymore. It's all disgusting if you ask me! Ahhh, so this Mozart's classical piece isn't just a number but has a name. I do not know the names of most classical arrangements. I do enjoy listening to it on occasion, though. Great picks! Stop by when you can to listen to my WSC picks when you get a chance. Happy St. Patty's Day!! xx

    1. Isn’t that a funny song and video from Weird Al? I’m glad you like it and Neil Diamond. I think he is telling the truth because why would you say something after all these years u less it was truly just innocent way of thinking. Glad you like my classical piece. I will definitely check yours out.

  5. Weird Al is hilarious, especially with Donny. Al is smart enough to have carved out quite a career for himself. I've always liked Neil Diamond. My choices: 1. I'll go with Randy Rainbow and his "Kamala" sung to Camelot. 2. Pretty Woman written for Orbison's wife Claudette 3. Blue Moon by Rodgers & Hart

    Love,
    Janie

    1. I’m glad you like that Weird Al video. I like your choices and totally forgot about Blue Moon. Roy Orbison is one of my all time favourites....I almost went with this song.

  6. I love that song from Weird Al. Why has he never been considered for the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame? He's been around since 1979 with his first single. He's had the same band since 1982 with a line-up that's been stable for nearly 30 years. He's lasted than most of the acts he's parodied and often sells out venues.

How can anyone not love Neil Diamond? That's like saying you don't like pizza or ice cream. Mozart, I love Mozart.

  9. Since I didn't know the movies, I will stick with the songs. I like Weird Al Y. I don't sit and listen to his songs, but what a clever niche he made with his parodies. And Sweet Caroline is a great oldie. You can't go wrong with Neil Diamond or Mozart either.

  10. There are so many songs about Caroline, he’s right, it’s a good fit for music. Caroline, No (Beach Boys), Caroline, Yes (Kaiser Chiefs), there’s a Kirsty MacColl song just called Caroline. I could go on! As for the planet, I’d go for Venus in Blue Jeans.
