My Kaspar in his Tux( just left the Oscars) and my Lexi, in her sexy fur coat. Lexi is the lioness always pouncing on poor Kaspar, more a lamb. This week it’s freebie week over at Monday Music Moves Me and I wondered if there were any songs about the lovely ( not!) month of March and there are! In fact, I have one on a CD I own so, without further adieu, here are my 3…

2. MELANCHOLY MARCH SUNG BY JULIE LONDON-1956
Julie London can sing the phone book and she’d make it sound sexy. Anyhoo, here she is singing about March, which I do find melancholy. This was written by Herman. Saunders, a casting Director and Producer ( lyrics) and Dory Previn, married to Andre Previn, who composed the music.
3. THE WATERS OF MARCH SUNG BY ART GARFUNKEL-1975
This was a song from the Brazilian, Antonio Carlos Jobim, who made this song famous so Art Garfunkel decided to sing it..in English. I have this song on one of the CDs I own of Garfunkel …I forgot I have this:)

I thoroughly enjoyed the three March songs you posted - all new to me. Ruth Etting's vocals are clean and clear, while Julie London purrs like a kitten. I pictured her next to a fireplace on a cold winter night singing nekked on a bearskin rug. It was a joy to follow the lyrics delivered stream-of-consciousness style by Art Garfunkel singing "Waters Of March," the song composed by Brazilian Antonio Carlos Jobim. Art's 1975 Breakaway album must be excellent, since it also contains the hit singles "My Little Town" (with Simon) and his dreamy cover of the Flamingos' doowop oldie "I Only Have Eyes For You."

DeleteYour cats are beautiful! I have that Art Garfunkel CD too. I love his voice, but we went to see him a few years ago and it was a mistake. Remember your icons when they were young!

DeleteSuch cute kitties! ♥ Those songs were all new to me. I did see the Ruth Etting biopic and remember Julie London from her days on the TV show "Emergency". She had a beautiful voice!

DeleteI'm surprised I don't know the Art Garfunkel song - I think I only know My Little Town (a favorite) from that album, though I might recognize others if I hear them. I also enjoyed the Julie London selection.

ReplyDeleteNice choices two, Ruth and Art's songs, of which I'm not familiar with. I like Ruth Etting's voice but was a bit surprised by it when I first heard her sing. I had grown up on Doris's rendition of her songs and had expect a tenor closer to Doris's dulcet tones than Ruth's more nasal sound. I still prefer Doris but can see how Ruth had success with her voice.
Melancholy March and Julie's performance of it are lovely. She had a very distinct stylistic approach.
I don't love Art's song though his voice is as good as ever.
I can think of plenty of songs with March in the title but not in the proper context, i.e. "March of the Wooden Soldiers" etc.
There are many songs with March in the title including a couple of Strauss songs.
DeleteYes, I love Doris's versions and love that movie with James Cagney. She nails the role.
Julie just purrs with that song and many others . I do love Art's voice and his song choices.
Hi Birgit - pets are wonderful ... I'd have a cat if I could. I too don't know this song - but appreciate Anabel's comment ... better to remember them as we hear them, not necessarily see them as we and they age! Cheers Hilary
