Sports Songs..Kinda

This week, over at Monday Music Moves Me, it’s all about sports…sports and me….me and sports…..hahahaaaaa. I did think of 3 songs that I have done, in one form or another and here they are…

1. NIGHTSWIMMING BY R.E.M. -1993

I do love swimming and enjoy swimming in a pool, the lake or the ocean, as long as there are no sharks. This song, by REM, makes me think when I was a kid and my brother and I were swimming at midnight in our Esther Williams above ground pool. In fact, we would get out of the pool and run around the small sidewalk surrounding the pool, a few times and then jump in. It would feel like bath water and we would  continue to do this for over an hour or more….it was so much fun.

2. COME SAIL AWAY BY STYX-1977

I love this song and it would always play when I went on this ride called The Blizzard or something like that. This ride had all the cars connected in one big circle and would go forward and backward in a circle, going faster and faster squishing me into the corner. While on this ride, I’d hear this song being played and it was just fun. I have gone sailing, kind of, well, I was on a boat and enjoyed every minute, drinking my OJ and vodka, don’t worry, the driver was completely sober but I was not driving the boat so I could have a drink or 2.

3. WALK THIS WAY BY AEROSMITH-1975

I’d never buy their records but I do love quite a few of their songs including this famous song. I get a kick that this song was inspired by the movie, “ Young Frankenstein”,  which they went to see and kept laughing at the  scene when Marty Feldman says to Gene Wilder to “Walk this way” and then Wilder walks like Feldman( you have to see it). Steven Tyler realizes that it s the perfect title and lyrics to this riff they created. I love walking, when I can, especially in nature because it is just so calming to me.

So…what sports songs come into you mind?

  1. Hi, Birgit!

I'm thrilled to see the latest pics of my good buddy Harley and his kid (kit) sister Lexi. It appears that Harley is adjusting to the kitten and accepting her as a new member of the household. I trust that he treats her gently and has not snapped and snarled at her.

I enjoyed your song selection. "Nightswimming" reminds me of an early 1970s vacation in Myrtle Beach, SC, with Mrs. Shady #1. We took a late night stroll along the sand, and the air was so warm that we decided to be naughty and hop over the patio railing of a hotel we passed, jump in their pool and cool off for a minute or two. Breaking the rules that night was an exciting experience.

"Come Sail Away" reminds me of an even naughtier occasion. It happened during my second stint as a bachelor shortly after I moved down to Florida in 1984. I met an older woman who turned out to be a wild child. She invited me along on a boat ride around Tampa Bay. There were several other couples on board. Little did I know that it is customary out on the water for women to flash the people on passing boats, and that's exactly what all of the females on my boat did. I got closeup views of their boobies as well as the boobies of the reciprocating women on other boats. In that moment, I realized that I wasn't in Kansas anymore.

Yessum, I have seen Young Frankenstein several times and recall the classic scene you described. Your anecdote reminds me of all the weekend hikes in the country I took with my dad in the 50s and 60s. We chose a different spot every week and loved gazing at the trees, birds and other wildlife we encountered along the way. Walking is good for what ails you and I look forward to the end of this long hot summer so that I can resume my walks up here in the northeast, doing so in my dad's memory.

The first sports song that comes to my mind is "Centerfield," the baseball-themed ditty by John Fogerty and title track of his 1985 solo album. Released as a single, "Centerfield" approached the U.S. top 40 that summer. The song reached the top 20 on Canada's Adult Contemporary chart.

I would also like to mention "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye," the single by the band Steam that topped the chart around Christmas time in 1969. In the years that followed, fans started chanting the song at baseball games and other sporting events. Before long, organists at ball parks, football stadiums, hockey rinks and other sports venues began playing it. Wiki adds the following observations: "It is generally directed at the losing side in an elimination contest when the outcome is all but certain or when an individual player is ejected, disqualified, or more often in baseball games, a pitching change is made during an inning."

This was fun, BB. I'll see you again tomorrow when I'll be "Sittin' In The Balcony" (Eddie Cochran hit) and waiting for the curtain to go up -- "At The Movies!"

  4. Finally - third time the charm. First I got interrupted, then it started to rain (was sitting outside) and then I forgot to come back and finish listening. Anyway - I wasn't familiar with the first song. It's been, oh, close to 48 years since I last was in a pool at night. The other two songs I knew but didn't know the inspiration for Walk This Way. Sports songs - the one I'm thinking of right now is the theme from Chariots of Fire.
