Free Spirit, Highly intelligent and opinionated. Took off from the studio without caring. Loved Proust, Writer-"Lulu in Hollywood". Dixie Dugan cartoons from the 1920's were inspired by her. Ended up working in Saks 5th Ave.store until rediscovered in the 1950's. She was also a call girl apparently. Alcoholic and recluse later in life. Cult Figure. Excellent Bio by Barry Paris.

she was very witty and I loved her comment about Loretta Young that the best thing she ever saw was when a director threw a chair at Loretta. She was a party gal but loved her freedom
Deletenot sure I have ever heard of Louise Brooks either ... but now I'm fascinated. What an independent soul ... my, my, my!! Pandora's Box sounds familiar - but then again, I've been watching a lot of Turner Classic Movie channel's interviews and documentaries lately - so maybe it came up there?!!? ReplyDeleteShe is amazing to read about and to read her own book. Pandora's Box is considered a major classic and highly valued. It is an amazing film and she is brilliant in it. Shows the first lesbian theme too

She had bangs since she was a kid and it looked amazing on her. Colleen Moore is praised for starting the bangs but it was actually Ms. Brooks who had it before her.

DeleteDon't know much about this one... but I remember being fascinated by the stylish bob. I've seen Pandora's Box and Diary of A Lost Girl ... which were pretty racy! Censorship is very relaxed here in Europe :-)

Brooks was an icon of style in the late 1920's, and her role as Lulu was heartbreaking. Plus she was a brave lady by not following the rules of the studio system. Like Clara Bow, Helen Twelvetrees, and Ann Dvorak, it destroyed her acting career, but hey... it was brave.
