Letter G
The A to Z Challenge
...John Wayne to Rita Hayworth (Circus World) who starred in...
1. GILDA- 1946-DRAMA NOIR
DIRECTOR: Charles Vidor
STARS: Rita Hayworth, Glenn Ford, George Macready, Joseph Calleia, Steven Geray
PLOT: A bum is saved by a seedy rich man who gives him a job in his casino and they both pledge that a woman should never come between them. Enter Gilda who has married Seedy guy but has had a previous affair with the bum. This film has innuendo coming out the ying yang!
QUOTE: Parden me, but your husband is showing.
OSCAR NOMS: Nil
OSCAR WINS:Nil
LOVE: The writing because they had to be clever with all the innuendo since it was at the height of the censorship laws/moral code.
FAVOURITE SCENE: The strip scene but only one glove comes off. (or the hair flip made famous in the film, The Shawshank Redemption)
FAVOURITE CHARACTER: Uncle Pio (Steven Geray)
TIDBITS: Rita was a fantastic dancer but not a singer so her songs were dubbed much to her chagrin. Rita and Glenn carried on an affair, off and on, for 40 years.
SIX DEGREES (MORE OR LESS) OF SEPARATION: Glenn Ford to Jack Lemmon (Cowboy) to Walter Matthau in....
GRUMPY OLD MEN-1993-COMEDY
DIRECTOR: Donald Petrie
STARS: Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, Burgess Meredith, Ann-Margaret
PLOT: 2 grumpy old men battle it out for the love of a new lady who moved across the street from them...hijinks ensues
QUOTE: Looks like Chuck's taking old one eye to the optometrist (one of many)
OSCAR NOMS: Nil
OSCAR WINS: Nil
LOVE: The camaraderie of the 2 male leads (they made 10 films together)
FAVOURITE SCENE: The ice fishing sequence where Matthau has had enough
FAVOURITE CHARACTER: Grandpa Gustafson (Burgess Meredith)
TIDBITS: When Matthau died, his son, with Jack Lemmon, were on the Larry King Live show and revealed that Matthau had fun with the reporters years before and told them his real last name was Matuschanskayasky when...it wasn't! In fact, that last name appears in many of my film books-hahahaaaa. He also was part of the same Bomber group as James Stewart who was their leader.
SIX DEGREES (MORE OR LESS) OF SEPARATION: Jack Lemmon to Henry Fonda (Mr. Roberts) to.......what film will be tomorrow?

Two Great movies! Love Gilda. Hayworth was such a talent.
ReplyDeleteShe was a talent and she didn't think she was
DeleteDon't know the first movie but incredible Rita and Glenn had an on/off affair for 40 years. Grumpy Old Men was wonderful, I didn't like the sequel though. Walter Mathau and Jack Lemon were always two of my favourites.
ReplyDeleteThey did and I read that one or the other kept a picture of the other by their bedside. It somewhere in my books but I couldn't find it. I think they did love each other
DeleteI don't believe I've seen either film.
ReplyDeleteI could see you fall for Rita as soon as she swings her hair back and says , "Who, Me?"
DeleteHi, dear BB!
ReplyDeleteI have not seen either movie but I can testify that world class beauty Rita Hayworth was the kind of woman who could stir things up and make men do crazy things. (So was Ann-Margaret.) As I told Michele at Angels Bark, I didn't care for The Golden Girls because of its heavy reliance on old age jokes. I do not find the stereotype of Grumpy Old Men amusing either, and prefer to remember all three principal actors in their earlier roles at the peak of their respective careers. It's hilarious that Walter Matthau pranked reporters by telling them his real name was Matuschanskayasky.
Thank you, dear friend BB!
Rita was a killer in heels and down to earth. My mom loved Grump Old Men but, if my dad were alive when it came out, he may have agreed with you.
DeleteI saw Grumpy Old Men; it was definitely cute :)
ReplyDeletebetty
It wa and I love that flick
DeleteLoved Grumpy Old Men!
ReplyDeleteWe're on our way! (Heathrow).
The Glasgow Gallivanter
I'm certain you are in Toronto now enjoying the cold
DeleteGrumpy old men is a great film, enjoyed that and the sequel. Don't think I've ever seen any of their others. I know he was supposed to play Garner's role in My Fellow Americans but passed.
ReplyDeleteHe did pass but I think it was because he was ill. Matthau was not well in his later years and he actually developed double pneumonia after the ice fishing scene
DeleteGrumpy Old Men I and II are a couple of my mom's favorite movies of all time. So, I've seen them both many times. I love the outtakes at the end. Burgess Meredith was a hoot in those movies. Really funny stuffs.
ReplyDeleteI love those outtakes. Burgess Meredith was so great
DeleteYes. Rita Hayworth caused a lot of innuendoes.
ReplyDeleteDid she ever!
DeleteRita Hayworth was absolutely gorgeous, wasn't she? I think I saw Gilda in one of our vintage movie houses, but now I can't remember. As to GOM. A good laugh, indeed.
ReplyDeleteShe was a stunner and she was a good actress
DeleteI never really cared for Jack Lemmon so I never watched it. I've never seen Gilda either.
ReplyDeletePoor Jack....maybe one day you'll see Gilda
DeleteI miss Rita Hayworth...
ReplyDeleteShe died too young.
DeleteI'm a big fan of both of these as well as the Grumpy Old Men sequels. ☺ Rita Hayworth was gorgeous! Such a shame she suffered from premature Alzheimer's and died from it much too young.
ReplyDeleteGOM is so funny that I can see over and over. Rita didn't deserve this and so early. The doctors now figure she was suffering from this as early as in her 40's. When she made Circus World with John Wayne, she couldn't remember her lines which didn't sit well with Wayne but nobody knew
DeleteI didn't see Gilda but loved Grumpy Old Men. That was fantastic casting!
ReplyDeleteI may be stupid but I don't understand the 6 degrees of separation that is listed at the end of the posts...
(Your letter G is pretty) :)
Michele at Angels Bark
Hope you see Gilda. Maybe I am making it too opaque. I am trying to connect the films by relating a star or director to the next film I will spotlight. Some I can connect quite quickly while others take a longer time.
DeleteGrumpy Old Men is a bona fide family favorite...
ReplyDeleteIt is so much fun
DeleteBurgess Meredith stole the show!
ReplyDeleteHe did and I wanted him on more
DeleteGrumpy Old Men is one I should really get around to seeing one of these days. Before I become a grumpy old man. Which is coming soon I fear.
ReplyDeleteI think my hubby. Is already there
DeleteGilda is an interesting movie and that's one heck of a dress.
ReplyDeleteThat dress was especially made just for her and she had to have a corset on because she just had a baby a few months back
DeleteNever saw Gilda, but definitely saw Grumpy Old Men. I've been a fan of Matthau and Lemmon since The Odd Couple.
ReplyDeleteThey made a great team. Their first film is called The Fortune Cookie
DeleteThis monogram looks very regal with all the glamour! And loved both the movies, #2 is a favorite. Liked Grumpy Old Men better than Grumpier Old Men too. Can't beat Matthau & Lemon together. Loved the Odd Couple (and every time I rewatch it too!) TFS - Happy wkend.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I had to do glamour since Rita worse so many beautiful sparkly outfits. Lemmon and Matthau were a great team.
DeleteFinally, a film that I've seen! Grumpy Old Men was funny. That quote from Gilda made me laugh :)
ReplyDeleteIsn't that a great quote? I love it and want to use it one day
DeleteLove that censored dialog.The best!
ReplyDeleteOh the writers had to get by the censors and you can tell
DeleteAlways meant to see Gilda, and your favourite quote is so cute. I loved Grumpy Old Men--what a fun movie!
ReplyDeleteHope you see Gilda one day. Grumpy Old Men is so much fun
Deletethese seem like fun movies :D The first one is similar to many Bollywood movies :)
ReplyDeleteVisiting from A to Z Challenge

I didn't know that. Gilda is so close to Bollywood films...very cool
