THE PRESTIGE-2006
2 men are magicians and friends until the wife of one is killed during a performance. The one blames the other and they become bitter rivals each trying to outdo the other. It stars Christian Bale and Hugh, be still my heart, Jackman as the 2 magicians who hate each other. Scarlett Johanssen is the girl between both and Michael Caine as the trusty partner of Jackman...not Bale’s butler:). It was up for a couple a Oscars and is considered an excellent film about one-upmanship, magic, mystery and David Bowie. Yes, David Bowie, who didn’t want to do this movie until the director, Christopher Nolan, talked him into it playing Nicholas Tesla-brilliantly, I might add.
Good that Nolan talked him into doing it indeed. Poor Batman lost his butler though haha A great pick for P.

It is interesting that you posted about this film immediately after the death of actor/magician Harry Anderson of Night Court fame. I have not seen The Prestige but it seems like my kind of movie. Over the years I have enjoyed other films about magic and illusion including Tony Curtis as Houdini and Vincent Price as The Mad Magician. David Bowie was indeed a great actor and a box office draw when cast in films. The Prestige might also have benefited from a cameo by Modern Family's Phil Dunphy. :)

An excellent Nolan film with a great twist. Although I confess, I liked The Illusionist (which came out the same year) just a little bit more.
ReplyDeleteI've heard of this film, but never seen it. Hugh Jackman is excellent in anything he does(I've seen him on stage, before he became famous, as Gaston in Beauty And The Beast). And I can't forget David Bowie in Labyrinth - what a delicious Goblin King!

This is one I have not heard of, which surprises me, since I have a love for all things science and Tesla, too. I'm going to see if I can find it on Netflix. It sounds wonderful.

ReplyDeleteHaving connections to the world of magic, this film especially interested me. I liked the premise of the story as well as the Tesla aspect. This is a film that I've been wanting to watch again and fortunately I do have the DVD in my collection.
