YOU’VE GOT MAIL-1998
A rom-com starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, before she Effed up her face and now looks like some freaky clown, has the 2 of them falling in love. Oops there is more to it, he runs a big chain bookstore and she owns a children’s bookstore that her mom began. They dislike each other because his big store is killing her small store and she can’t abide these box stores that hire people with no knowledge of books. Of course, they are falling in love through email. Remember when email was the only way to correspond through the computer? Hey, I remember just writing regular mail to send via the postman. He finds out early on that she is the one he is falling for but keeps it quiet so we see the antics. It’s a remake of the Ernst Lubitsch comedy, The Shop Around The Corner, which stars my favourite, James Stewart and which I still have to see!
Meg Ryan was so done, by this point, making these romantic comedies and wanted to make more serious roles which she did but....well, she is not in too many movies now. Tom Hanks likes to collect old typewriters which is the same as his character in the film.

ReplyDeleteYessum, I have seen this rom-com but, like you, prefer Meg Ryan in her fresh faced years in films like When Harry Met Sally, The Doors, Sleepless in Seattle and When a Man Loves a Woman. I remember watching Meg on TV during her college years when she did commercials and had a role on the soap As The World Turns. It's too bad she felt pressured (as many actresses do) to stay young looking and elected to go under the cosmetic surgeon's knife with less than desirable results. Thanks for reminding me about The Shop Around the Corner. As a Jimmy Stewart fan, I am eager to check it out.

One I enjoyed indeed. Too bad she had to go all blubber lip and felt the need to make things like In The Cut. Never knew it was a remake.
ReplyDeleteI've seen this several times and have also seen the Jimmy Stewart one. And I've seen the musical "She Loves Me" based on the original play which started it all. Can't wait to see what you come up with for Z. I am guessing and we'll see if I am right.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen this one, but I HAVE seen The Shop Around The Corner, which often turns up at my local cinema at Christmas, and it is lovely. The difference is that they work at the same store, not a bookshop, but a gift shop, and write each other letters.

I've never seen this, or any romantic comedies that I call "chick flicks." Give me action any day, but keep your saccharine movies for your own perusing (grin. Sorry, I never wanted to see this one, or any of those chick flick movies Ryan was in, although I know a LOT of people couldn't quit talking about it.
ReplyDelete"Meg Ryan was so done.." when she cheated on Dennis Quaid to have an affair with Russell Crowe. That's when her rom-com Haagen-Dazs movies' stock plummeted and she had to make serious movies to try to be taken seriously. Meg Ryan wasn't America's pixie princess no more. Still, to this day, if you look at her eyes they're cute.

ReplyDeleteI saw this some time ago as well as having seen Shop Around the Corner a few times. I'm sure I liked the latter one better, but I can't remember that remake which is not a good sign that it was worth remembering. I liked it, but apparently not enough to love it or remember it.

I did not realize this was a remake of a Jimmy Stewart movie. I need to try to see this. No one can match Jimmy Stewart. He was a hero on and off screen.

I saw the Lubitsch film years after You've Got Mail, having no idea that it was based on his film. I kept thinking, Man this is familiar. When I figured You've Got Mail was a remake of this, I was disappointed with You've Got Mail. I thought the story was so fresh and original. Oh well.

ReplyDeleteYou forgot In the Good Old Summertime with Judy Garland and Van Johnson. The first iteration of this story is The Shop Around the Corner. Then came In the Good Old Summertime (they both work in a music store. Judy Garland. Naturally it's a musical).
