No Thursday Movie Picks this week

Hello all! So I am not participating over at Thursday Movie picks this week because the topic is South East Asian films. Um......I know nuttin' 'bout this. I will enjoy seeing what other bloggers have picked but I am 0 for whatever when it comes to this theme.

I decided to discuss a few flicks I have seen. I have seen quite a few actually but I am just going to talk about a few. Some are good, none are great and one is horrible. Oh and they are all new!

1. WATER DIVINER-2015

This  is a post World War 1 film so not a true war film. It is actually more about love, journeys and forgiveness. It takes place in Australia where a father finds out his 3 boys are missing and considered dead. His wife, beyond grief, commits suicide leaving the man to travel to find his boys and bring them home. Russell Crowe is my hubby's favourite modern actor and I enjoy him also ( the actor...and my man but that is too TMI). He not only acts in this film but he directed it as well. It is flawed and it is not a great film but it is a good movie. I especially love how honorable the man is to his wife's wishes and his determination to find his sons. A worthy watch.

2. I'LL SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS-2015

My hubby and I just watched this film last night. We heard wonderful things about this film and Blythe Danner's acting performance. Blythe Danner was in a M.A.S.H. episode playing a nurse and Hawkeye's love of his life. She is in Parenthood and happens to be the mother of the stick, Gwyneth Paltrow. Anyways, she plays an older lady, stuck in a rut, enjoying her wine a bit too much who sees her friends often to play cards and golf. Her life changes when she meets the very hunky man, Sam Elliott (I always had the hots for him) and we watch her on her journey. It is a small film with good names in the film like Rhea Perlman and June Squib. It is a comedy drama and I found it enjoyable but, like my hubby, I thought another actress would have played the lead better, like Jessica Lange. My favourite scene is when the 4 gals decide to enjoy some "Woodstock" memories ending up buying lots of junk food at the grocery store. Another movie worth seeing-not great but nice to watch.

3. SPY-2015

Comedy is tricky because what one finds funny another finds rude or boring. My hubby and I laughed so hard at this movie. No it's not going to win any awards but who the Fluck (see Pat Hatt:)) cares? It is a fun take on the Bond movies and I love how they mess with the characters Jason Statham usually plays. It is funny and we had a fun night watching it. It is over the top as it should be.

4. HOT PURSUIT-2015

It should be called "Hot Mess". Lousy flick. Blechhhhh Can the people who make these posters photoshop these gals any more? Witherspoon overacts her by the book naive numbnut character while Vergara is sounding more and more like Charo. There are a few scenes where we laughed...a little but mainly groaning. If someone said to watch this film again, you will see me pursue my ass in the other direction.

I will be back next week with my usual picks. Have a fab day!

  1. Hot Pursuit has crap written all over it. Some things just scream "trash film" on the cover.

Water Diviner and Spy 2015 look like movies I'd like to see.

  3. Hi, Birgit! (Hi, Anne O'!)

I think Mrs. Shady and I would enjoy the Blythe Danner movie. We both like films with mature (but not curmudgeonly) characters. Mrs. S has also had the hots for Sam Elliott ever since she saw him in the epic Civil War drama Gettysburg (1993). Meanwhile, I am thoroughly enjoying Rhea Perlman in The Mindy Project which has become the funniest, edgiest sitcom of them all now that it has been yanked from the network and is exclusive to Hulu. I appreciate a good spy spoof and Spy sounds like my kind of thing. In my opinion Witherspoon and Vergara are both overexposed and need to take a step back.

    Thanks, BB!

    1. I enjoyed I'll See you in my Dreams...it is a true dramedy. Rhea Perlman is fun in it. I haven't seen The Mindy Project. Spy is fun and quite good.

  4. Reviewed Spy just the other day. I also loved it, had a blast watching it. So far, I've been purposely avoiding Hot Pursuit.

  6. Hot Pursuit was great....the 1987 one with John Cusack that is. Stealing the fluck are we? haha Still have to give Walter Diviner and Spy a watch at my sea.

  8. I haven't seen any of these, but I suspected that Hot Pursuit was terrible. I thought the trailer was bad... and often it contains all the best scenes. So, if the trailer is terrible... yikes!

I suspect I'd enjoy the Blythe Danner movie. Sounds like a good movie to chill out to and enjoy a glass of wine.

    1. Yup Hot Pursuit is bad although the scenes (yes there was more than 1..I think 2) that were not in the trailer. Funny you mention wine because that is how to watch the Danner film. She drinks quite a bit of wine in the movie-made me laugh

  11. I could've thought of some films.
Hadn't seen the first one. Must've slipped under the radar this year, which is odd for a Russell film.

    1. Oh yes, Which ones of the Indonesian films would you have picked? The Russell film is quite good.

  12. I was also stumped on Thursday Movie Picks this week. My husband and I watched Spy recently too and had a good time with it. It was so much better than I assumed it would be.

  13. I thought Reese Witherspoon must be very secure with herself to take on "Hot Pursuit". I'm glad I saw it on Netflix rather than the big screen. I was not disappointed with "Spy" at all. It's one of the few movies in which I felt very satisfied about the story when it ended and I wanted to see more of the main character. That movie had the potential to be as lame as "Hot Pursuit" but Melissa McCarthy and the other actors kept it from being so somehow. Good to know about "I'll See You in My Dreams." I put it in our Netflix queue yesterday.

    1. I know what you mean and Spy is really funny whereas Hot Mess isn't-all in the writing, directing and acting-comedy is not easy. Let me know what you think of ...Dreams.

  19. I've always liked Blythe Danner, but haven't seen any of these movies. Melissa McCarthy is always hilarious, so these are two I would like to watch. Sophia Vergara is incredibly annoying! Thanks for the reviews, Birgit.

    1. I love Melissa McCarthy and her husband always has a cameo in her movies. We watched 4 Brothers the other day and Sophia Vergara has a small role as the wife of one of the brothers. Funny-her accent was not nearly as strong as it is now. Koochie, Koochie-koo
