Thursday Movie Picks-One Day

So I am assuming the events take place in One day or evening so I went with that assumption and decided to take a disastrous route. Head on over to Wandering Through The Shelves to find out what the other people chose. Now, onto my 3...

1. AIRPORT-1970

I love these disaster movies especially the ones from the 1970s because they were star studded extravaganzas and often quite hilarious. This was the first Airport film that began a series with big name actors...and George Kennedy who was in all the Airport films. This film stars Burt Lancaster on the ground trying to deal with the knowledge that a nut with a bomb is on an airplane. Dean Martin is the lead pilot and Jacqueline Bassett plays the stewardess and his love interest who are told there is a madman with a bomb on the plane and he is sitting beside a nice little old lady played by Helen Hayes who won an Oscar for her role(believe it or not). I love the music and the fun plot which heralded in the disaster movies that were big in the 70s.

2. THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE-1972

Forget the remake and watch this instead with a great cast lead by a very angry priest played by Gene Hackman...yeah...Gene Hackman..as a priest..hahahaaa. All these people are venturing from New York to Greece celebrating New Year’s on this boat and listening to Carol Lynley lip synch to a song that, I think, won best Oscar. A rogue wave comes right after midnight killing off Leslie Nielsen as the ship’s captain and turning the boat upside down. People survive but not for long since most decide to stay while a few decide to climb a Christmas tree and make their way to the engine room which is now above the water. We watch as these survivors must get through one hurdle after another.  I love watching Shelley Winters swim and save the day.

3. THE TOWERING INFERNO-1974

I hope I didn’t use the movie before but, if I did, I don’t remember so it’s new to me to use it here..um...ok then. This is one star studded nut fest with Paul Newman and Steve McQueen (sorry Steve that I gave you second billing to Paul) leading the pack. Paul Newman is the architect of this huge skyscraper who comes back from a lengthy vacation to find his building basically done. His father in law is William Holden and Holden’s daughter is played by Faye Dunaway and they are all at a huge party on the top floor, of course. Richard Chamberlain plays the jerk who decided to cut corners which leads to a fire. This fire could have easily been put out by OJ Simpson (yes, that O.J.)  but he disappears for a while just for the fire to get out of control. In enters the fire chief played by Steve McQueen who tries to save the day. Let’s see if they all make it..you know they won’t and I have to admit I love the flaming Robert Wagner and his lover bite the dust.  Hmmm, makes me sound like a bad gal.

So, what films would you pick?

So...I have a confession to make...I love fashion and all that goes with it. My friend, Marni and I, decided to have a blog about it and we began our new blog with the Oscars. You don't have to visit but if you want to, it is called https://twofriendswithapassionforfashion.blogspot.ca

    Hi, Birgit!

Disaster films are my thing and I have seen all three of these. Who needs a mad bomber on the plane when you have "little ole wine drinker me" Dean Martin piloting the aircraft? :) I have watched all of the airport movies and, of course, Airplane! which also boasted a star-studded cast including Peter Graves who shocked viewers with his portrayal of the pedophile pilot. And who can forget "it girl" Victoria Principal in another great/terrible disaster flick - Earthquake? Dressed as she was in that film, Victoria made the earth move under my feet. :)

The highlight of Poseidon Adventure was Shelley Winters holding her breath for 30 minutes while she swam underwater to the other side. Gene Hackman was terrific in the film.

Congratulations on the launch of your Passion For Fashion blog! Enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend BB!

    1. Ever see a Turkish prison, Billy? I thought Peter Graves was hilarious as well as Lloyd Bridges. I almost picked Earthquake and should have since I had chosen The Towering Inferno before. I believe many loved Victoria in that movie.

  6. Hi Birgit - those huge disaster movies are fun to watch - but I wouldn't go to them ... sometimes I get to see one. Your new blog sounds interesting ... especially if it's something you both enjoy - have fun - cheers

  8. Nice theme within a theme. I was a bit too young for the disaster film thing (even Airplane!), so I missed these. Of course, if they ever do disaster films, you'll have to come up with three others ;)

    1. Oh I can come up with 3 more...I just saw SAN Andreas which was better than I thought it would be. I’d pick that film with Dennis Quaid where everything freezes over which is on tv every week and Armageddon

  9. Ya!! You picked the Big Three in the Disaster Movie Hall of Fame! I am a devout fan of all of these and would be hard pressed to choose a favorite out of the trio.

Jackie Bisset is just the chicest stewardess to ever fly the friendly skies, poor Jean Seberg's hair is immobile and though I love her in the film no way should Helen Hayes have won the Oscar over Maureen Stapleton.

Loved Shelley in Poseidon but Stella Stevens was my absolute fave as Linda Rogo! She was just everything. Carol Lynley you can have....I kept saying if someone has to go let it be her please.

Towering Inferno is just the last word in high rise peril. Such an amazing cast, BTW Faye was Newman's girlfriend but Susan Blakely was Holden's daughter and married to Chamberlain. I got a chuckle out of your reference to billing since McQueen was notoriously finicky about it.

I didn't do anything as fancy as you but this was easier to come up with three than I thought it was going to be.

High Noon (1952)-Just married to his Quaker bride Amy (Grace Kelly) that morning Sherriff Will Kane (Gary Cooper who won the Oscar for this performance) has quit his post and plans a quiet farm life away from the town. Word comes that a killer he had imprisoned 5 years ago has been paroled and is arriving with his gang on the noon train intent on a showdown. Ignoring advice from all to flee, including successful businesswoman Helen Ramirez (an outstanding Katy Jurado) his former mistress, Will tries to gather help to stand up to the outlaws but finds all the townsfolk turning their backs on him and he must face them alone at High Noon. A thinly veiled allegory for the blacklist which affected many involved with the film.

Cleo from 5 to 7 (1962)-A young singer, Cleo (Corinne Marchand) must wait two hours for the results of a biopsy and drifts around Paris seeing friends and considering the exigencies of life. Part of the Nouvelle Vague movement this isn’t for everyone but it has its charms.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)-“Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” That’s the credo of uber popular high school student Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) who decides that today is too perfect to be wasted in school. After convincing his parents he’s sick he gathers up his best friend Cameron (Alan Ruck) and girlfriend Sloane (Mia Sara) for a day of adventure in the city while his suspicious principal Mr. Rooney (Jeffrey Jones) tries to catch him red-handed. Broderick is madly charismatic in the lead and surrounded by a fantastic cast including Edie McClurg who is hysterical as Rooney’s secretary.

    1. Glad you like my picks and thanks for clarifying about who was Holden’s daughter in the film...I haven’t seen it in a while. I agree about Carol Lynley and was so hop8ng she would have bought it in the stack instead of poor Roddy McDowall. Stella was great in this movie. Helen Hayes didn’t deserve the Oscar at all but she was still entertaining. I almost picked Ferris Bueller but wanted to go with a theme. I never saw your second film but I love High Noon which caused quite a stink in Hollywood and made John Wayne wanting to make Rio Lobo..I believe. I like that film too.

  10. I think my favorite thing about Airport was that Dean Martin played the pilot, and his normal persona was that of a drunk!

  13. The Towering Inferno I think I've seen. Seen like 3 versions of the Poseidon Adventure, original was the best indeed.

Obviously Die Hard is going to pop in for me, Groundhog Day did too.

  14. Well, I'm a big Colin Farrell fan, so Phone Booth is a personal favorite. Farrell is an egotistical and insincere publicist who ends up trapped in a phone booth by a sniper who terrorizes him into admitting his faults. Great performance. Keifer Sutherland voices the sniper.

  17. BIRGIT ~
A number of movies that are told primarily in flashback would technically qualify, I suppose. Such as 'It's A Wonderful Life' or 'Heaven Can Wait'.

But I'll play strictly by the book and go with one of my all-time favorite movies, 'FALLING DOWN'. I never get tired of watching that one. It's one terrific scene followed by another terrific scene, followed by another...

  19. I haven't seen the original Airport, but I have seen the last. Oh my, was that terrible in the most awesome way possible. If you haven't seen it, one scene features Kennedy flying a 747 upside down while firing a flare gun out of the coxkpic window like it's a six shooter.

I really enjoyed The Poseidon Adventure. Used to watch it whenever it came on TV as a kid. I'll be watching The Towering Inferno in a few months as part of my Blind Spot series.

  23. Towering Inferno—WOW! You just gave me the best blast-from-the-past moment—I actually saw this at the theatre! Not at release (I'm from '73), but it must've been a rerun... I was still pretty young, though; maybe 7 or 8 at most... I guess back then parents (or theatres!) didn't worry so much about exposing kids to violence and whatnot—or maybe we've just discovered why I turned out the way I did, hehehehe. I do remember loving it, though.

Thanks for this moment, Birgit! And for hopping over to Quiet Laughter earlier... Really appreciate it :)

    1. Thanks for visiting! I remember, vividly, when the man falls on the glass ceiling...it scared me because of my fear of heights. My mom took us to Europe and, in Vienna, my brother and I were playing while my mom slept. There was a a glass ceiling when I looked down the staircase and I got scared because it reminded me of that scene.

I think I've seen all of these, except I'm not completely sure about "Airport". One of my favorite disaster movies is "Dante's Peak" with Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton. Have you seen it?
