Thursday Movie Picks- Long Awaited Sequels

This was a tough week for me to come up with long awaited sequels because my mind went blank...typical. Let’s see what the others have chosen if you head on over to Wandering Through The Shelves we can find out. Here are my 3....

1.  EPISODE 1-THE PHANTOM MENACE-1999

I was sooooo looking forward to this film and then I watched it. The special effects, cinematography and interior design are amazing (my favourite word) the acting was good except for the kid, who truly sucked, but this film was just not that great ...sorry. So Q-Tip, played by Liam Neeson is a Jedi Knight with an apprentice, Obi Wan Kenobi and Q-Tip sees-a young kid and believes he is the saviour. In between this they must escort Queen Armadillo to some senator meeting or something like that and they pick up a dumb ass lizard, Jar Jar Binks. The evil force is building and the great Death Maul is trying to kill the kid and the rest. There is unrest in the force  so stay tuned... My favourite scene is the final fight scene with Darth Maul, Obi and Q-Tip. The sword, um, lightsabre fight scene with that spectacular music by John Williams is worth watching.

2. EPISODE 7-THE FORCE AWAKENS-2015

Now this is a sequel! It is all about Star Wars but this time it is way after the victory by the rebel forces. It starts with a tough gal on the planet where Luke Skywalker grew up. She finds the falcon and a droid that knows the whereabouts of Luke who disappeared. There is also unrest in the force and we meet up with Princess Leia and Han Solo and good ole Chewie. They had a child (Leia and Han not Leia and Chewie or Han and Chewie for that matter), an ugly one with huge lips who is an entitled, self-absorbed brat with parent issues who loves the dark side. This is a great sequel worth the wait.

3. MAD MAX:FURY ROAD-2015

The Mad Max films were from the 1980’s and I was never a big follower of these films so I was not much into this film but I’m glad I watched this movie. It is whack-a-doodle flick with Mad Max captured but escaping with baldie Charlize Theron and some babes in white dresses. The lord wants his concubines back and sends out his army of freaks along with a heavy metal band that play f-up music. I had to laugh at the bald freak with the guitar and the other nuts going after the gals, Charlize and Max. It is a gritty, dirty film that is not that uplifting which is not one of my favourite motifs, but I still think it's a good film and better than the originals.

What are your 3?..

  1. Yeah, those prequels were crap. Episode 7, although a complete rehash, was good though. 8 bored me for most of it. I enjoyed Mad Max too. Indiana Jones 4 came to mind, too bad is sucked. Let's hope 5 is better.

  2. You are so right about The Phantom Menace. We were so desperate, we didn't realize the movie rather sucked.
Now, Fury Road was a sequel even better than the original films.
And this year we finally saw the sequel to The Incredibles.

  3. Hi Birgit...have learned my lesson with sequels....they always disappoint...but I haven’t seen Fury road so will add that to my list.....it’s still baking hot here and we are getting desperate for rain....but it’d great for the tennis so keeping cool and watching ...have a great weekend ...hugs xxxx

  4. Ha. I thought Episode II was even worse than I. Could that Hayden guy be the worst actor ever? I'd have a tough time thinking of any 'long-awaited sequels'. Wasn't there an Alien that came out long-after?

  5. Hi, Birgit!

I don't have much to offer this time around because I do not follow the Star Wars series. I never had the slightest interest in it or in Star Trek or any of the related films or TV series. Unfortunately I have not seen Mad Max: Fury Road, and therefore cannot comment on it except to say that I prefer Charlize Theron with a full head of hair. I keep thinking back to More American Graffiti, one of the most disappointing sequels ever.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend BB!

  6. We matched on Fury Road! I loved that one and The Force Awakens. Phantom Menace like you said was a let down but it wasn't the worse prequel, imo.

  7. Hi Birgit - I like reading your choices ... but these aren't my sorts of films - but you'd guessed that, right?! Cheers Hilary

  8. I haven't seen any of these. My daughter is a huge fan of the first three Star Wars movies. She sees all the sequels although she says they aren't good. Go figure.

  9. Episode 7 worked for me, too. Too bad about Leia's and Han's kid being such a brat. He looked so funny when he had his temper tantrums.

  10. I saw the first one on TV when they showed all six one weekend. Haven't seen the other two, though. Han and Chewy?? That's how rumors get started (grin). From what I read, I think you NAILED this one.

  11. I agree with your assessment of both the Star Wars films. I did not see the Mad Max, however.

I think they must have chosen this topic because of Incredibles 2. If you liked the first one, the second is totally worth it. It's a similar story arc, but that didn't detract from it. (If you're familiar with the 1st, then the villain in the 2nd won't be a surprise. At least, I saw it coming.)

  12. I know a lot of people who absolutely hated the latest Star Wars film, and those who don't care much for Solo either. I thought both were pretty good, but I've never watched the Star Wars films, so I haven't the emotional investment that Star Wars lifers have.

  13. We have a match with The Force Awakens. I nearly picked Fury Road, also. Fantastic film. I don't hate The Phantom Menace, but it's definitely not one of the best the franchise has to offer.

  14. The bad thing with the prequels is that Lucas lost his touch with directing. Besides Neeson, Sam L Jackson, McGregor, Lee, all the acting was pretty darn wooden.

  15. Hi Birgit! Prequels, sequels....Whatever happened to original ideas? And don't get me started on remakes! Most of those are total crap. I never got into Star Wars or Mad Max, but I know they both have huge followings. My favourite sequel is The Godfather II. I also liked III, but it didn't do well. Iron Man III was good too! ☺ Have a nice weekend.

  16. Since I don't really keep up with new movie releases anymore there are no long awaited sequels I can think of. I did like the original "Mad Max" films so I was kind of glad to see that sequel come out, but I was waiting for it so it came as a surprise.

  17. It's rare that I like a sequel, so I can't come up with ANY sequel that I was really looking forward to and felt that the wait was long.

  18. I barely had the patience for the first three Star Wars films so watching any sequels is anathema to me. Fury Road was fine, I liked it while I was watching and promptly forget it the second the credits rolled.

My first and third were wildly anticipated only to be a letdown on release but my second is a cute harmless continuation.

The Godfather: Part III (1990)-Long aborning (16 years between this and Part II) wrap up of the Corleone saga isn’t terrible but a mere shadow compared to the first two. A HUGE weak point is the decision by Coppola to cast his daughter Sofia (a decent director but an atrocious actress) in a key role.

The Rescuers Down Under (1990)-Thirteen years after The Rescuers the R.A.S. (Rescue Aid Society) sends their top two agent mice Bernard (Bob Newhart) and Miss Bianca (Eva Gabor) down under to save a Golden Eagle from the evil trapper McLeash (George C. Scott). So they hop on their trusty albatross Wilbur (John Candy) and are off on their big adventure.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)-Nineteen long years after Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade came this uninspired follow-up. It not that the film is horrible but for a Spielberg adventure, especially one with Ford in this role, it’s uninspired. It’s nice to see Karen Allen back in the fold but the idea that she and Ford would produce Shia LeBeouf (!!) takes the film even further into the negative category.

  19. Not a huge fan of the Phantom Menace but I liked The Force Awakens and loved Fury Road. Nice picks!

  20. We match with Fury Road and I couldn't be happier! More love for FURY ROAD!

  21. I loved The Force Awakens, except for someone who shall remain nameless getting murdered.
Nice to know I'm not the only one who has blank mind weeks:)

  25. Awesome category! I would add The Empire Strikes Back. Sure, three years isn't that long - unless you're four years old in 1977. The first time I saw the trailer for Empire was one of the most exciting moments of my entire life. And, that is the greatest movie sequel ever!

  26. Did you see Lando is going to be back in the 2019 Star Wars episode? That should be fun.
    Safe journey.

  27. I love Harrison Ford and any movie he makes. Thanks for your commentary!
