Thursday Movie Picks-Interview

I found this a bit tough because I wasn't sure in which way one could interpret this theme and then, thought, who cares! I already used Little Big Man a couple of weeks ago so I couldn't use that film again. I pondered this theme and came up with 3 I hope you like. Let's see what everyone else has chosen over at Wandering Through The Shelves.

1. CITIZEN KANE-1941

What hasn't been said about this great film? There are tons of books and documentaries about this film, the making of and the correlation between the film and William Randolph Hearst who was a powerful newspaper mogul at this time. In fact, Hearst tried to get the film destroyed but, thankfully was unsuccessful. There is a reporter who interviews everyone who knew the famous Kane who whispered "Rosebud" when he kicked the bucket(even though he was alone at the time, somehow everyone knew his last words). You get to hear about this famous recluse in his huge house with his own personal zoo(just like Hearst-Gosh I want to visit Hearst castle which is on my bucket list), how he started with a small paper and rose to be the wealthiest but most corrupt person in the world. I love the montage scene depicting his new marriage and how it wastes away in a few short scenes...brilliant. The writing is excellent, the camera work, done by Gregg Toland, is masterful and, even though it is not a favourite film of mine, it deserves all the accolades.

2. THE KILLERS-1946

This Film Noir starts off at the end (I could have used this last week) with The Swede's (Burt Lancaster) murder to an insurance agent trying to find out who deserves the $2,500 life insurance policy of the dead Swede. He interviews people who knew him and becomes tangled up in the sordid business that the Swede was in, including the fantastically beautiful Ava Gardner..the femme fatale (that's a no brainer). This is an excellent film noir that many people do not know about yet it has some great acting and a wicked plot.

3. TRUE CRIME-1999

Clint Eastwood directs and stars in this movie as an alcoholic reporter sent to interview a killer who has less than a day before he meets the zapper...um, the needle actually. he starts digging and finds out that there is a lot more to this story than just interviewing the soon to be dead man. This tanked at the box office but I really enjoyed the film and think it has a  lot to offer. Isiah Washington as the convicted man gives an understated performance that work well. Clint might be a bit too old to play his character but I can get over that.

Funny, I read in the morning and when I am in bed but, after work, my hubby and I sit down and watch 1 or 2 movies so i do see quite a few each month.

Now which interview movies comes to your mind?

  2. Can't go wrong with Clint Eastwood.
I'm going with the best one I've ever seen - Frost/Nixon. Just awesome performances.

  3. I am stumped to think of a movie. Too early. But I did see Citizen Kane and True Crime. I enjoyed both of them. I have visited Hearst Castle and it was one of the most amazing places I have ever seen here in the states. Back in the mid 70's when I was there they still had animals roaming around. And that indoor pool was incredible.

  4. Hi, Birgit!

Black & white films of the 40s are favorites of mine, and I studied the innovative and masterful Citizen Kane at college. Citizen Kane is a picture that reminds us that film making at its best is an art. I enjoyed studying the styles and production techniques.

I have not see the other two films in today's post. My mother was fond of Burt Lancaster and I always appreciate a noir ("raw, rugged, ruthless drama") especially if one of the characters is a fetching femme fatale. Ava Gardner was a great one and therefore I would like to see The Killers.

When it comes to "interview" movies, there is none funnier than the 2014 James Franco - Seth Rogen film The Interview which features Randall Park in the role of with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
Park currently stars in the TV family sitcom Fresh off The Boat and Mrs. Shady and I watch that show faithfully.

Enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend BB!

  6. I think I saw Citizen Cane a long time ago, can't honestly remember. Sounds like I would enjoy all three of these movies.

  7. I've only seen Citizen Kane, which I thought was pretty over hyped. 🤷‍♀️ I think I probably would've liked it more had I not read about it being the "greatest movie of all time" so much beforehand.

  8. I've seen Kane many times and that's a good one. Don't remember much of the other two.

First thing that came to my mind was Fellini's The Clowns which is a comic documentary about interviewing famous clowns from the past.

IN one of my favorite films--Kiss Me, Deadly--the Mike Hammer interviews several people in order to solve the case with which he becomes involved.

Lot's of films with interviews, but I'm not thinking of any others at the moment.

  9. Citizen Kane and True Crime I know, but not The Killers. Sounds interesting! I can't think of an entire movie about interviews, but one scene that comes to mind is from "American Beauty", where Kevin Spacey asks for a job at a fast food joint while sitting in his car at the drive through. It was pretty funny. ☺

  10. I respect the artistry of Citizen Kane more than love the film.

I haven't seen True Crime yet but The Killers is a great film that should really be better known. Both Burt Lancaster and Ava Gardner really burn up the screen the way only Movie Stars can.

I'm sitting out the week. Time was tight and the only film I could think of off the top of my head was Frost/Nixon which I adore but I've used before.

  11. Somehow I've managed to miss all three. Blush. Though, I've certainly heard of Citizen Kane, a definite classic.
Hope you're having a productive, pleasant, pain-free day.

  12. I saw Citizen Kane in high school as part of an English assignment. I still remember it years later; it had that much of an impact on me.

Haven't heard of the others :)

    Happy Easter!

  13. I've been meaning to rewatch Citizen Kane for quite some time but I'm afraid I won't like it the second time around. It fits the theme perfectly though!

  14. I haven't seen 'True Crime' (no Clint Eastwood fan am I), but the other 2 I've seen, of course, and they're good choices, Birgit.

One that popped into my mind immediately was 'WHEN HARRY MET SALLY' - it contains multiple short interviews with married couples. I like that movie way more'n I thought I would. Even to the point of having purchased it on DVD.

  15. I did go to Hearst Castle, back when I was 13. I had no idea the significance then. (It was a family trip down the coast after visiting relatives in Oregon. I appreciate the trip so much more now than I did then.)

  16. Welles' later Confidential Report, a.k.a. Mr. Arkadin, is also great.

  17. Citizen Kane is a great film. I haven't seen the others. Interview is hard topic I think, but then I would have a tough time picking movies anyhow. Happy weekend, and if you celebrate any of the up coming holidays, I hope they are good for you.

  18. Hubzam and I do the same thing: watch movies nightly.

Since we gave up cable, I love Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and YouTube. In short order, I can usually find something to watch.

These are all great films! Clint Eastwood is a big fav with the menfolk.

  19. I'll be back to read your picks soon, but for now I need to let you know what is happening in my life.

For reasons I won't go into, I have been locked out of blogger. This is a devastating problem for me, especially since I am in the middle of my recycle campaign. However, I have set up a HOPEFULLY temporary blog to get me through until I can reclaim mine. Please tell everyone you know, and please visit me starting tomorrow (April 20) at:

Even if you don't normally visit me daily, I could use the support right now. Thank you and Happy Easter.

  21. The Pursuit of Happyness and The Wolf of Wall Street are two movies with interviews. I have seen Citizen Kane but not the others that you used. I would love to see San Simeon.

    Love,

  24. Birgit,

We saw 'Citizen Kane' a few years ago. I remember liking it but that's about it. The other two, even Eastwood's film are new to me. I'm a fan of Clint's and wouldn't mind seeing it. 'Interview' is an interesting movie prompt and the only film that comes to mind which I have not seen is "Interview with the Vampire" with Tom Cruise. I noticed Janie Junebug mentioned 'The Wolf of Wall Street'. We saw that one and again can't recall the film but I think we liked it. Gee, my brain isn't coming up with anything else. Sure seems like a hard prompt. There have to be more titles that fall under this one but darn if I'm comin' up empty-handed. Oh well...thanks for dropping by my place, dearie!

  25. I've seen Citizen Kane; it really is a stellar film. Now I've got The Killers on my list of must see films. Thanks!

  26. I loved the movie The Paper, though I haven't seen it in years. As a newspaper journalist, I felt it captured a lot of the moral dilemmas real journalists grapple with.

Interview with a Vampire, though not my favorite, I thought was better than the book.

Authors Anonymous is a mockumentary where the characters are being interviewed throughout the film by an unseen documentary crew. It starts out a bit silly, but I loved it, because there's so much for authors to relate to. The scene where one of the main characters reveals her "peaceful outdoor writing space" made me laugh out loud, because it reminds me of what I have to deal with too.

I was eager to watch Citizen Kane because of all the hype, but I didn't enjoy it. Perhaps it was a "before my time" thing.

  27. I'm a big fan of Welles' and probably would have loved Citizen Kane even more than I do if Charles Schulz hadn't spoiled the ending for me (Don't ask.). Orson is my cat's namesake.

  28. I have always wanted to watch "Citizen Kane." Even though I know how it ends.
Hey, I watched "Titanic." Even though I knew about that iceberg thing.

  29. True Crime is one of the few Eastwood movies I've missed. He's an awesome actor. He gets a lot across without raising his voice doesn't he?:)
