Thursday Movie Picks:TV Edition-Secret Agents/Spies

It has been a wonky week which is why I haven’t been around much...my apologies. My hubby’s birthday was Saturday which was fun with family and friends. Monday I was at our Satellite office and had no ability to look at my blog and yesterday was Lidocaine day with a nutty ride to Toronto...the 401 is, I believe, the busiest freeway in North America and the nuttiest...yes, apparently worse than the LA freeways, and I can see that. I was Stoned most of the day but, it helps with the pain even though it never takes it away but it helps. Anyhoo, this week, over at Wandering Through The Shelves, it is the TV edition and it’s all about spies. Let’s get to it with my 3.

1. THE AVENGERS-1961-1969

Ahh, Steed with his handy umbrella and his beautiful fellow spy in Mrs. Peel, played fetchingly by Diana Rigg, investigate and capture some very weird criminals, always looking top notch in his English suit and Mrs. Peel in her cat suit with cut outs at her hips and a watch attached with a chain. It made every man drool and, I have to admit, I dreamed of wearing something like that, but I knew better as I wouldn't want to scare anyone. Actually Honor Blackman was the first sexy gal to work with Steed, played with effervescent charm by Patrick Macnee and Linda Thorson was the last in this first edition of the TV Show(It came back later with "The New Avengers" starring Macnee, Joanna Lumley and Gareth Hunt as the poor third wheel). This tv Show was stylish, sexy and fun to watch.

2. SECRET AGENT MAN-1964-1967

Patrick McGoohan is one of my favourite actors who starred in 2 shows, this one and the great, “The Prisoner” which many people speculate was the character from Secret Agent Man or known in the U.S. as Danger Man. He was a frequent guest star on Colombo and even directed a few of the Columbo episodes and was an excellent character actor in films such as “Braveheart” playing the ruthless King Edward 1. Ok, back to the series, McGoohan played a top secret spy who often had to infiltrate and capture the evil guys using his intelligence and his hands, rather than the gun, to outwit his opponent. It is an intelligent, tense show that you have to keep your eyes on to understand the full show. I love the fact that McGoohan wrote in his clause that he was never to kiss any woman because the only woman he kissed was his wife. By the way, He was asked to play James Bond twice but declined and mentioned his friend Sean Connery instead.

3.  LA FEMME NIKITA-1997-2001

This is an American Cable/Canadian version of this oft done series, filmed, mostly, in Toronto. I think this is the best version although I didn’t care for the later episodes because it just went too dark and sad. The premise is about a two bit criminal, wrongly convicted of murder, taken by a top secret spy ring and trained to become a top notch spy. I have to admit I really like the lead, Peta Wilson, an Australian model, who portrayed the naive, warm-hearted deadly spy. She worked well with next to the hubba hubba Roy Dupuis as her trainer. The rest of the cast is well acted from the hippy, sarcastic Walter to the nerdish computer geek. The head of spy ring is the ruthless Operations but the true killer is the second in command, Madeline who talks so quietly but she is deadly. It’s worth a look.

I picked Get Smart before and MI-5( or Spooks) and the newer shows I haven’t seen. Anyway, what would be your 3?

For the men...

Your Welcome...and for people who did not know Diana Rigg was in Game of Thrones...

  1. I didn't know that was Diana Rigg. Wow. And I enjoy spy/secret agent themed thing. I like the avengers, but I haven't seen the other 2. I like that movie Bridge of Sighs, Get Smart (the goofy old show) and how about Mission Impossible. And now that I am thinking about them more names have popped into my head. Happy Thursday. hugs-Erika

  2. Hi, Birgit!

Happy birthday to your hubby, dear friend!

This I swear to you. Someday I will make Emma Peel my bride. I was a fan of the spy genre but, for some reason, didn't watch The Avengers. I didn't know that Pussy Galore was on that TV series. Can you believe that Honor Blackman will be age 94 a couple of months from now? I believe I mentioned this movie before, but if you haven't yet seen it, I urge you to watch The Hospital (1971) starring Geo. C. Scott and Diana Rigg.

Funny, but I never watched Danger Man aka Secret Agent either. It is indeed interesting that McGoohan's contract stated that he was never to kiss a woman, because the only woman he kissed was his wife. Recently I read the same about actor Neal McDonough who plays the villainous character Damien Darhk on the Marvel TV series Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow.

I remember the La Femme Nikita series, but again, didn't watch it. I watched Man from U.N.C.L.E., Girl from U.N.C.L.E., Get Smart and the Sean Connery Bond movies.

I need to let you know that, effective immediately, I am taking a three week break from blogging so that Mrs. Shady and I can do some traveling. I plan to return to the blog world on Father's Day, June 16. Take care and I hope to see you then, dear friend BB!

    2. Have a great 3 weeks off and wish you a great time. I figured you were for Mrs. Peel but I am surprised you never saw The Avengers. I knew Honor Blackman was older..and older than Sean Connery

  3. I loved The Avengers, but as I was living at home all during that time and we only had on TV, I didn't always get to watch it. Never watched the other two. My Dad liked Get Smart so I did get to watch that a lot.

  4. Hi Birgit - hope you're feeling easier ... and adding Freeway 401 into the mix must be so much worse - take care. Loved the Avengers and the Prisoner ... the last one I don't know ... but can see others from Shady's reply - cheers Hilary

  7. The first two you listed are two of my favorites. We have a local religious station that shows ancient TV shows, and on Sunday nights runs the Honor Blackmon episodes of "The Avengers." Incidentally, originally John Steed was paired with Dr. David Keel, played by Ian Hendry, and had several female partners in the first couple of seasons before Catherine Gale (Blackmon). The first several seasons were in black & white and were created by ABC (Associated British Corporation, Part of London Weekend TV). Starting with the 4th season, ABC in the UK collaborated with ABC in the US; that was when the shows went to film and were done in color.

Patrick McGoohan is one of my favorite actors. He was outstanding in "Secret Agent Man" and "The Prisoner," and he had a fantastic chemistry with Peter Falk in "Columbo." As you pointed out, he directed several episodes, several of which he was also the "bad guy" in.

I don't know if you would consider it a secret agent/spy character, but Roger Moore was outstanding as "The Saint." Moore was playing Simon Templar when they asked him to play James Bond, and he had to turn it down because he was committed to the TV show. The Saint was a sort of Robin Hood character who was considered a criminal (or at least a suspected criminal) and his methods were occasionally within the penumbra of the law. He was suave and debonair but could be a rough-and-tumble character as well.

And let's not forget "The Man from UNCLE," with the suave and debonair Napoleon Solo (played by Robert Vaughn) and the rough-and-tumble Ilya Kuryakin (played by David McCallum). UNCLE was the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement, an organization dedicated to maintaining law and order in the world, particularly protecting the world from THRUSH, which I don't think stood for anything but they were the bad guys.

  9. LOVE The Avengers!!! Especially the Diana Rigg years! No offense to Honor (love her too) or Linda Thorson but Dame Rigg is a goddess. When even her participation couldn't get me interested in Game of Thrones I KNEW the show wasn't for me.

I haven't seen a ton of Danger Man episodes but I like the ones I have. Patrick McGoohan was such a fine actor and arresting presence. The first place I remember him from is The Three Lives of Thomasina which my sister and I watched endlessly when we were kids, it's where I became a lifelong fan of Susan Hampshire as well! But I loved him in The Prisoner, the Colombos and as the villain in Silver Streak.

I think I saw one episode of La Femme Nikita but when it was on I hadn't seen the film yet so I didn't bother.

    I went 60's TV too!

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (1964-1968)-Secret agents Napoleon Solo (Robert Vaughn) and Illya Kuryakin (David McCallum) work for secret international counterespionage and law-enforcement agency U.N.C.L.E. (United Network Command for Law and Enforcement) under the direction of Alexander Waverly (Leo G. Carroll) to battle evil organizations such as THRUSH and other nefarious forces that threaten freedom with much gadgetry thrown in. A trendsetting hit in its day this received a decent big screen treatment in 2015.

It Takes a Thief (1968-1970)-Sleek international thief Alexander Mundy (Robert Wagner) temporarily incarcerated is offered a deal by Noah Bain (Malachi Thorne) head of the Secret Intelligence Agency (SIA) to be free if he steals important information or objects for the government. Breezy, stylish series globetrots around the world providing a time capsule of 60’s high fashion and high quality guest stars (among them Bette Davis, Teri Garr & Suzanne Pleshette) and in the later episodes Fred Astaire as Mundy’s master thief father Alistair.

Get Smart (1965-1970)- Maxwell Smart (Don Adams), a highly intelligent but bumbling spy works for CONTROL, battling the evil forces of rival spy agency KAOS with the help of his chic and competent partner Agent 99 (Barbara Feldon) while their often exasperated Chief (Edward Platt) looks on. Daffy fun with Adams’ deadpan delivery even under the most extreme conditions priceless. Tons of cool gadgets, gotta love the shoe phone!

  10. It's been many years since I've traveled the 401 in Ontario, but I'm not sure it would be much worse than L.A. traffic which I avoid as much as I can--in other words I don't go out much.

My favorite spy shows were Man from UNCLE and Get Smart. I did enjoy The Avengers. Not sure that I watched Secret Agent Man though I did like the theme song a lot so likely I did watch that show at least sometimes. Never saw La Femme Nikita nor the film version.
