Thursday Movie Picks-Witness

Mid August...holy smoke a doodle! To be honest it has been too humid and hot for me so I can’t wait until it cools down a bit. This has nothing to do with the theme which is all about witnesses and my mind drew a blank even though I know there are a ton of films involving witnesses. The guru of this weekly blogfest is Wandering Through The Shelves so go over to her site and check out what everyone else has chosen. Here are my 3....

1.  SOME LIKE IT HOT-1959

I know I chose this before but it is so brilliant and full of fun led by Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon as 2 sad sack musicians who witness the St. Valentine’s Day massacre in 1927 and must get out of town quick. They find out they can go to Florida with a band..an all girl band so they become Josephine and Daphne and board the train along with the very jiggly Marilyn Monroe. Tony decides to woo Marilyn as a Cary Grant millionaire with a can’t get it up problems. Poor Jack, who also wants Marilyn ends up getting engaged ....to his own millionaire. Very funny comedy with George Raft as the bad Mafia man and Joe E. Brown priceless as the millionaire....Nobody's Perfect!

2. WITNESS-1985

Well, this was a no brainer for me which was a big hit for Harrison Ford as a detective who must hide his star witness, a young Amish boy since the boy knows it’s a fellow cop who is as dirty as they come. Don’t worry this is all in the first 10 minutes of the film. Ford hides the boy in the boy's own home area...with the Amish which includes his hot momma whom Ford has the hots for. This is quite a taught thriller which the Amish hated since it showed them on tv...well, not the real Amish...that comes out decades later in some stupid reality tv show. Once you watch this movie, check out Weird Al Yankovic’s music video that actually has Kelly McGillis and Alexander Godunov from the movie in his video...and Florence Henderson The Brady Bunch).

3. LETHAL WEAPON 2-1989

Ok, yes Mel Gibson is an asshole, sorry my French, and I never liked him ever since seeing him interviewed by Baba Wawa(sorry again, Barbara Walters) but I like him in his movies and I like this series which was fun. He had great chemistry with Donald Glover where they play detective partners with Gibson as the nut, a no brainer, and Donald Glover getting too old for this shit. They are on the case of big time smugglers but when the bad guys get too close to home, the detectives are reassigned to protect a star witness played so well by Joe Pesci. Soon they realize the witness and the smuggling case are connected. It’s fun and a thrill despite dead people but it doesn’t matter in these films.

Which films would you choose?

Oh and for fun...

  1. Hi, Birgit!

Someday I intend to make Baba Wawa my blushing bride!

The movie Witness is one of the first films Mrs. Shady and I watched during courtship. I was especially interested in seeing it because, for many years, I lived in Lancaster and Lancaster County, PA, at the edge of Amish country. Folks there have a saying: "You need to go through Blue Ball, Bird in Hand and Intercourse to get to Paradise." :) I thoroughly enjoyed Weird Al's "Amish Paradise", a parody of "Gangsta's Paradise"), a rap song originally recorded by Coolio. On The Brady Bunch, Florence Henderson played it straight for the most part, but she was a good sport and had a great sense of humor as revealed in her deadpan performance in Al's video. I'll never forget seeing teenage Amish boys "wilding" during "rumspringa" - trading in their horses and buggies for souped-up muscle cars and speeding around the county in them.

I have seen Some Like It Hot at least a dozen times over the years and never tire of it. Tony's impression of Cary Grant on the yacht is priceless and Josephine and Geraldine are hilarious together.

Enjoy the rest of your week and weekend, dear friend BB!

    1. That video is fun isn't it? Florence was a lot of fun and was on many comedy shows including Politically Incorrect. Witness was a good movie and the only time Harrison Ford got an Oscar nomination. I never heard of Rumspringa but it sounds funny that they couldn't wait to get behind the muscle cars. Some Like It Hot is funny and although Jack was supposed to be Geraldine she just blabbed out Daphne..Um, I meant He:)

  2. Weird Al! Good choice.
    Loved the Lethal Weapon series.
I'll pick The Client with Tommy Lee Jones.

    1. Weird Al is great and I love his parodies. I still have to see The Client

  3. Not a lover of old Mel either, but one or two of his films have been okay. His William Wallace in Braveheart was comical, he tried a Scottish accent and was sooooo funny. I've not seen the other films you've found, but I'm with Alex above the Client was brilliant, Kate x

    1. I liked Braveheart but I am laughing at what you wrote about his accent:)

  4. The only one I've seen here is Some Like It Hot, which I adored. It's so fun. I've never gotten around to the other two although I've seen parts of Lethal Weapon.

    1. Some Like It Hot is fun and very funny. Witness is a good movie and those LW flicks are fun but nothing earth shattering

  5. Hi Birgit - I'd enjoy them all ... but loved the Weird Al video - thanks for the picks ... cheers Hilary

  7. You're right that there are a lot of films that involve witnesses. You have some good picks--especially Some Like It Hot--and I've seen them all. Darn if I can remember many others right off the bat, but To Kill a Mockingbird immediately came to mind--except I don't think that was exactly a witness film. I'm just thinking of that scene where Scout points out Robert Duvall as helping her.

So darn it! I have a dozen lingering on the peripheries of my brain and can't think of a one. Let's see...How about Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much? I saw that again not long ago (the 1950's version). That's a good one.

  8. I too loved the Lethal Weapon series. As you say, they were fun. I will never forget the scene when Donald Glover was stuck on his armed toilet.

  9. I’ve actually seen two of the three films you mentioned. Witness was visually beautiful, but only seen it once. Some Like It Hot is a great favourite film of mine, and oh, that last scene! I’ve never seen the Lethal Weapon films, but Danny Glover appeared in a cameo in the film of Maverick, as a bank robber. Mel Gibson sees this familiar figure under a robber’s mask, pulls it off and shakes his head...

How about Sister Act with Whoopi Goldberg? That was fun. She is a singer in protection, disguised as a nun, after seeing something she shouldn’t.

    1. Mel and Danny Glover are friends and that was a good movie. The last scene-Joe E Brown almost stole the picture. Oh yes Sister Act is great!

  10. Great choices for someone who felt they were coming up short!

Some Like It Hot of course is inimitable. Perfect cast, script, direction, just a joy from beginning to end.

Love Witness, and it was shot close to my home!, moody and tense with one of Harrison Ford's best performances.

Lethal Weapon is a good thrill ride despite Gibson's presence.

To get down to cases this week I did a little theme within the theme to help narrow so trains factor in all of mine in some way.

The Narrow Margin (1952)-Tough, grizzled cop Walter Brown (Charles McGraw) is attempting to transport the widow (Marie Windsor) of a mob boss from Chicago to L.A. via rail to serve as a witness at the trial of her husband’s cohorts. Once underway they discover there is a hit men on the train, who will stop at nothing to prevent her from testifying. Lean low budget noir is a classic of the genre.

Narrow Margin (1990)-Deputy District Attorney Robert Caulfield (Gene Hackman) is charged with returning reluctant murder witness Carol Hunnicutt (Anne Archer) back from Canada to L.A. by train to testify in the trial of a mob boss. As they hurtle through the Canadian wilderness they find themselves pursued by two hit men charged with eliminating Carol. Reworking of the ’52 film is plusher but doesn’t pack quite the same punch.

Murder, She Said (1961)-On her way home Miss Jane Marple (Margaret Rutherford) witnesses a murder through the window of her passing train car. She notifies the police but they are unable to find a body however Miss Marple knows what she saw and determines to get to the bottom of things her own way. Getting a job as a maid at the manor house she believes is the setting of the crime she hunts for clues while engaging in a battle of wits with the bombastic owner (James Robertson Justice). Delightful comic mystery is based on an Agatha Christie novel.

    1. You live in Amish Country! I always find that area very pretty to be honest. I'm glad you like my picks even the LW one with Mel. I guess we better not call him Melvin:) I love your theme within a theme and sadly, i have not seen any of these. I love Margaret Rutherford who was such a perfect miss marple

      Delete
    2. Ah, that one! The novel was The 4.50 From Paddington and it was a friend who saw the murder. Miss Marple believed her because she didn’t have the imagination to invent something like that, and asked another friend, a freelance housekeeper, to get that job. But with Margaret Rutherford, I guess they thought it would be better to simplify the story.

    3. I mean, because she was such a great comedian that it would be a shame not to use her to do all that stuff!

    4. Interesting I haven't read the novel but that makes sense, Margaret Rutherford does great things with the role. I also love the other loose adaptation Lady on a Train with Deanna Durbin.

  11. The end of "Some Like It Hot" was hilarious. "I'm a man!" "Well, nobody's perfect..."

  12. Some Like It Hot is such a brilliant pick! I'm hating myself so much right now for not thinking about it because two of my picks are from the 50s and it would have been a nice theme within theme.

    1. I kick myself for not picking Rear Window! It's one of my favourites. Glad you like Some Like It Hot because it is brilliant

  13. We share a pick on Some Like It Hot... ah... what a great film. I still like Mel Gibson but I don't agree with his politics or views on anything. Plus, I can't stand Baba Wawa.

    1. Glad we match. You have to see that interview which was done when he was making Hamlet. She asked him why he was ok for saying foul language etc...but he was very religious. He didn’t like that at all and gave a quote from Hamlet which was very scathing. He showed his true colours there but I do like most of his films and his directing ventures.

  14. Weird Al is great indeed.

Witness sure popped in. Lethal Weapon is a great series indeed, one of the only ones that didn't go to complete crap with its latter ones. Unlike say Die Hard. The 4th could qualify for this one, even though it was crap.

    1. You are right about the Die Hard going down...is that the one with the computer geek? Yeah....not the best and I always laugh when Willis can survivethe major fire bomb when the plane crashes in his truck

  15. Some Like it Hot is great, a real classic. Not seen the others.

  16. I'm with you about Mel Gibson. His saving grace, in my book, is that Jodie Foster still considers him a friend. But, barely.

    1. She does and I think she is very loyal and, since he has mental issues, it’s good he has a couple of friends

  17. You picked the exact films I would have picked. I could actually think of some this week! Some Like It Hot is one of the best films ever.

  18. Funny thing - Weird Al makes me squirm. I just can't stand him and I have no idea why. It's an ongoing joke in my household. I loved "Lethal Weapon," finally a movie you've mentioned that I've seen! Enjoy the rest of your week,
    Andrea

  19. Well, dear Birgit, I have seen ONE of these films. I thought I had seen Witness, but when I saw the trailer, I realized I hadn't. Looks like Danny Glover was in two of the films you highlighted today. Yes, I've definitely seen all Lethal Weapon films. I loved Glover and Pesci, so I can overlook Gibson who has more action than real lines in the films as I recall. Great choices, none-the-less.

    1. I’m glad you saw one of them. I realized I picked 2 films with Danny Glover and thought of picking a third but couldn’t think of one I have seen that could be a third film with him In it.

  22. I do love Weird Al.

I don't think I ever saw Witness. Of course I've seen Some Like It Hot.

  23. Three great movies and I've seen them all. Witness, of course, was the first movie that popped into my head when I read the theme.

  24. Witness was my pick of the litter. Excellent movie.
YOU have a grand, pain free day.

  25. My Cousin Vinny! Marisa Tomei's scene as the expert automotive witness is worth watching on its own anytime.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Mel Gibson, while a little on the different side, is an amazing actor. What did you find out at the doctor's office?

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think that Mel Gibson did Lethal Weapon before we knew what an asshole he is. So you're forgiven, Birgit. =)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Definitely Witness. The silent stunned expressions was like a sign language between Ford and the boy who points at Glover, it was like a thousand words being communicated, so amazingly done.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Seen both of you first two picks but I don't think I ever saw any of the Lethal Weapon movies in full before.
