Which Oscar Went To Which Song?

What can I say, isn't Harley cute? It's that time again... to choose your Oscar song:)). I decided to pick 1984 and even got a little Halloween fun with this one. I was 20 when this Oscar event rolled through and was in my 2nd year of university enjoying the partying spirit...oh and learning.....hahahaaa...no, it was the partying. So, let’s see if you can guess which song won, which one was nominated and which song got nadda.

1. PURPLE RAIN SUNG BY PRINCE

Prince was all the rage with his crummy movie and excellent songs. I remember when he arrived at the Oscars in his purple, sparkly, hooded outfit with an entourage of body guards surrounding the little guy. Later that week, I watched Johnny Carson who had the great Jimmy Stewart as a guest. I laughed so much when Johnny asked Jimmy what he thought of Prince’s arrival. Jimmy, who was at the Oscars, was perfect in describing what he saw.

2. I JUST CALLED TO SAY I LOVE YOU SUNG BY STEVIE WONDER

This was a song all over the airwaves which comes from the film, “The Woman In Red”  and ..I just can’t stand this song. I think it was done to death and I found it so drippy but I am probably in the minority.

3. GHOSTBUSTERS SUNG BY RAY PARKER JNR

I always love hearing this song and the movie. I watch the movie every year and I recall how much I laughed when Mr. Staypuff made his appearance. Apparently, Huey Lewis, from Huey Lewis and the News, sued Ray Jnr for copying his song, “ I Wanna New Drug.” It was settled out of court and, later, it came out that the leads, Dan Ackroyd and Harold Ramis asked Ray to create a song with a beat similar to Huey Lewis’s song.  I did not know that, but I still love this song.

So...which song won the Oscar, which was nominated and which got neither? I promise I will let you know in tomorrow’s post.

  1. Hi, Birgit!

    Happy Song Day, dear friend!

It looks like you did what I asked and placed both of your homemade pies on the floor for my buddy Harley to gobble up. Now he's got a food baby in his tummy and needs a snooze.

I was age 20 and attending an "institution of high and yearning" 14 years before your university experience. As you might expect, I know all of the entries in your multiple choice Brain Buster quiz because all three artists and all three songs were popular with viewers of the MTV-style station where I worked in the 80s. To be honest, I don't care for any of these songs. They were ballyhooed so extensively and played so frequently that they wore out their welcome. On top of that, I didn't like Prince's movie, thought Ghostbusters was overrated, and never saw The Woman In Red. Therefore, I am completely in the dark as I try to guess the correct order of these songs.

I can't see a copycat song like "Ghostbusters" winning the Oscar or even being nominated. That leaves the Prince song and Stevie Wonder's to fill the winner and nominee spots. Both artists were major stars at the time, and both influential, but I'm going to guess that Stevie's more traditional, easy-listening love song was picked as the winner, while Prince's edgy, avant-garde style of music and movie making drew a nomination but not a win.

Have a happy Wednesday, dear friend BB. I'll be "Sittin' In The Balcony" waiting for you tamale-- "At The Movies!"

    1. Harley would eat the pies for sure. Woman In Red I never had a desire to see and That Prince movie is stupid and quite bad. You sound like my hubby with Ghostbusters but I enjoy it I really ant stand the Stevie Wonder song but did win. Prince song was not nominated and Ghostbusters was funny how things work.

  3. Harley is adorable. I had a dog named Harley who we lost in 2014. And nice song picks too. I've actually seen all 3 of these films too. That's unusual for me. Hope all is well with you. hugs-Erika

  5. Harley is such a cutie! ♥ Stevie Wonder won (most of his songs are drippy - he was much more interesting as a kid!) and Ghostbusters was nominated. It's too bad Purple Rain was not - my favourite Prince song. I agree, the movie was definitely lacking. :P Maybe that's why? Price did win for Original Song Score.
