Christmas Movies Yet to See

There are some classic films I have yet to see and I need to see them, not want…need. So, without further adieu, here are my 3…

1. THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER-1940

This classic film has always evaded me and is not shown on TV plus I don’t have TCM so I never had a chance to see this famous film with my favourite actor, Jimmy Stewart. This is the original film remade as a musical starring Judy Garland, called “In The Good Ole Summertime” and “You’ve Got Mail” with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. It’s about 2 sales people working in a shop who dislike each other but, secretly, are writing to each other. They decide to meet but before that happens he finds out she is the gal he has been writing to. He decides to keep this a secret and it goes from there. It’s considered one of the best romantic comedies and one I have to see.

2.  REMEMBER THE NIGHT-1940

Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray star in this romantic comedy about a woman caught stealing who is brought to court and must deal with the prosecutor, played by Fred MacMurray. When he hears her lament being in jail for Christmas, he feels pity on her so he takes her under his wing and takes her with him to visit his family for Christmas. I never really heard about this film except in the last few years so it s one I’d love to see.

3. CHRISTMAS IN CONNECTICUT-1945

This is a famous Christmas film that I have yet to see. I did see the remake with Dyan Cannon and it was ok but, I know this original would be far superior. Barbara Stanwyck plays a Martha Stewart type who is trapped to show her beautiful home in Connecticut baking away. She is trapped because she has no home there nor can she cook or sew or do anything she is famous for. Now she must find a home, a husband and a baby to play her family. One day, I will see this…

So, which Christmas films have you yet to see?

  1. Hi Birgit I have just been looking at our tv schedules for Christmas and it’s going to be a bonanza of golden oldies….so it’s going to be good to binge watch these wonderful films rather than the romantic mush they show during the day….hope you have a lovely Christmas xxxx

  2. That's a good list. I'm 90% sure I've seen the first one. I have memories of it. And I have seen the last one. Worth your time, definitely. Have you tried IMDb.com to see where they're streaming? Wait, let me look...

Shop is on Max (naturally, as that's connected to TCM) and MGM+. Night is on Plex (which is a free streaming service, so if you have a connected TV, you can download the app and watch it immediately). And Connecticut is on Amazon Prime.

  3. We just watched "The Shop Around The Corner" the other day on TCM, and have "Christmas in Connecticut" on DVD. Haven't seen "Remember The Night" but would like to. I love Barbara Stanwyck!

  5. I have not seen any of these either. For a second I thought you posted Just Around The Corner, the Shirley Temple movie, and I was like "wait, I don't remember that being around Christmas!" lol

  6. Hi Birgit!

I'm sure it's no surprise to you that I've seen all three of these. I LOVE the first and last and really like the second.

The Shop Around the Corner is such a delicate love story and I think the best version of the story though Judy's "In the Good Old Summertime" has its charms. You've Got Mail left me cold. How Jimmy won the Oscar this same year for his obviously supporting performance in "The Philadelphia Story" when this was right there in front of the Academy is something I don't understand. For some reason the voters just didn't feel the film which is a pity. Frank Morgan was never better than he is here, the entire cast is wonderful.

Remember the Night is a bit harder edged but still has a lovely message and exemplary performances.

I'm amazed you haven't seen "Christmas in Connecticut" yet! I own it but even if not it is one I never miss. Barbara is on full charm duty and her performance is even more appealing when you realize she went straight into this from playing the uber evil Phyllis in "Double Indemnity".

I don't have any Christmas movies that I can think of that I've not been able to catch up with though I'm sure there must be one or two. I did just go to see "White Christmas" on the big screen with a group of 8 family members this past weekend. It's the 70th anniversary so they did a remastering and re-release. It was wonderful and gorgeous to look at.

    Wishing you a Merry Christmas!!

  7. I'll be watching 'Christmas In Connecticut' sometime between now and Christmas, as my friend Bryan just sent me a copy of it. I'd heard of it but have never seen it.

  8. All of the ones you mention are shown on TCM in fair rotation so I've seen all of these and so many more. And I keep running across new ones to me that are classics. Can't think of any particular titles, but I'm sure I'll keep finding surprises as I keep watching TV.
