Robert Redford just died on the 16th of September at the age of 89 and it really affected me because he is one of the last of the giants of the big screen even though he is from the modern era. I’m changing this up just a bit because I can’t just choose 3…. I tried, but I couldn’t and I am choosing more than 3 going from my favourite on down and will not give a synopsis. There are some famous films he made that I have yet to see like, “All The President’s Men” so I won’t showcase some famous films he did make. You can let me know which ones I should watch in your comments. Here we go…

You can see there are some major omissions because I have not seen them yet. Redford started the Sundance Festival in his home state of Utah but he was prolific behind the scenes as well as a Producer and Director. He won an Oscar for “Ordinary People” a film I still need to see. I noticed that I really like his directing style and here are 3 films I love…

DeleteI was shocked to hear of his death. He had a good long life. The movie that popped into my head when I heard the news was Sneakers. But there's so many of his movies to choose from.

ReplyDeleteI'm with you on a couple of points. His passing was a shock and a real loss. Also, a top three is an impossibility!!! I still have a few of his later films to see (my biggest misses at this point are "All is Lost" and his final film with Jane Fonda "Our Souls at Night" (that one is only because I don't have Netflix). He was someone that if I saw his name on the credits, I'd see the film, which usually worked out just fine (an occasional miss like "Havana" must be expected)
I'm not sure I can even keep it to a top ten so I'm just going to list the films in order of preference until I get to the few I didn't like: 😊

As far as the films he directed Ordinary People and A River Runs Through It are great, Quiz Show very good. The rest decent if unextraordinary, except for Lions for Lambs which I struggled through.
I really liked Captain America: The Winter Soldier but his role was small so I’m not including it in the main list.
He didn't do much television but his early appearance on The Twilight Zone episode "Nothing in the Dark" is memorable with both he and especially Gladys Cooper giving great performances.
First….that Twilight Zone episode is one of my favourites and I always wondered what he thought of working with Gladys Cooper? I just never got into The Way We Were…too romancy for me:)). Many of his later films I need to see like the ones you mentioned. All the Presidents Men is a big one I need to see along with the later films with Fonda. There are too many to mention of his films I want to see. I don’t care if I ever see Indecent Proposal or Lions for Lambs.
DeleteA lot of people love The Way We Were and Out of Africa. Inside Daisy Clover was an early film of his and an unusual role. I thought he was a very good director.

DeleteThe pairing of Redford & Newman was one of the all-time greats, and I think 'The Sting' is technically one of the best films ever made. And I can't even imagine someone disliking 'Butch & Sundance'.
ReplyDeleteI also enjoyed 'The Natural' (not the greatest baseball movie but one of the best) and 'The Way We Were'. By weird coincidence, on the 16th I just randomly decided to watch the Twilight Zone episode 'Nothing In The Dark' in which Redford essentially played the Grim Reaper, and I didn't even know that he had died earlier in the day. Odd.
