I believe today is the day of friendship and my friend, Loretta and I, have been friends for over 40 years…crazy! The 80s do not seem to be 40 years ago, but it is…I find that wild. I’m posting 3 songs about friendship and these are songs that came into my head right away. I’m joining Monday Music Moves Me which is freebie week.
1. FRIENDSHIP SUNG BY LUCILLE BALL AND VIVIAN VANCE-1953
Loretta loves, I mean, Loves, Lucille Ball and who doesn’t?! This song, written by Cole Porter, was used in this episode to great effect when Lucy and Ethel sing this song together with great affection. This changes when, they show up at the benefit wearing the same dress. Jealousy ensues and mayhem takes the form of each gal slowly destroying the other gals’ gown.
2. THE WAY OLD FRIENDS DO SUNG BY ABBA-1979
I played this song for my friend who thought it was a bit sombre, aka, for funerals….she is wrong, of course, because I always think of Loretta and myself when I hear this song. I think it’s one of the most beautiful from this quartet.
3. WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS SUNG BY JOE COCKER-1969
This is just iconic as is Joe Cocker’s style when singing. This is a great song that I love listening to and never tired of. I believe John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote this song for their band, you know…the Beatles.
What songs can you think of or, at least, what song makes you think of your best friend?

Hi, Birgit, my dear friend! I hope this new year finds you feeling much better than you were at the end of last when you were battling pneumonia. I just recovered from a prolonged bout with the flu that bowled me over the day after Christmas.
ReplyDeleteThanks for showing us your friend Loretta and presenting friendship songs that you and she like. On the first song from I Love Lucy you asked who doesn't like Lucille Ball. Truth be told, I don't, ever since I saw how she conducted herself on a TV talk show, can't remember which one. She came across as smug, rude and dismissive. It really turned me off.
Yessum, that Abba song sounds like one they sang aboard the Titanic after the last lifeboat departed. :)
Joe Cocker's cover of The Beatles song "With a Little Help from My Friends" is best known to millions as the theme of The Wonder Years series.
Mrs. Shady and I just finished watching The Kennedys, a charming and funny British comedy series set in the 1970s and similar to The Wonder Years. The show has a 1970s classic rock soundtrack and, coincidentally, the final episode that we watched two nights ago contained the 1976 Queen hit "You're My Best Friend." By the way, we were shocked and dismayed that The Kennedys only lasted 6 episodes before being canceled due to less than stellar ratings. Given a chance, it surely would have caught on.
I am returning to Shady's Place tomorrow with my first post of 2026. Hope you can stop by. Meanwhile, I will be waiting for you here tomorrow, sitting in the balcony-- "At The Movies!" Have a wonderful Wordless Wednesday, dear friend BB!
Hi Mr. Shady! I will visit your post on Monday. I am almost 100% but so sorry to her you got hit with the flu. I have been busy….Thursday, was a snow day for me because of the bad snowstorm we had and Friday, we picked up my brother at 4:30am to bring him to the hospital in Hamilton for a full knee replacement! He should have had it years ago but he was in denial. I picked him up that same evening! They don’t keep them in the hospital unless it’s really bad. I stayed overnight with him and he was in bad pain. They gave him strong drugs but to only take 1 pill…I told him to take 2 but nope. He was a good boy.
DeleteI went looking for that interview but couldn’t find anything except one with Douglas Sheehan who kept touching young women in the audience, and she told him to stop that… good for her…mind you he just put his arm around them, he wasn’t like Richard Dawson.
Hahahaa…I love that song by ABBA, but so many think it sad sounding. I love Cocker’s version of this Beatles song.
You’re My Beat Friend is perfect! I love that song. So many great shows are cancelled too soon. Today, Cheers would have been cancelled right away, but, thanks to Brandon Tartikoff, he gave it a chance and we had 11 years spawning successful careers and a spinoff- Frasier, an excellent show.
I've never heard that ABBA song before and I fell in instant love with it. Funny thing about covers of Beatle songs-there are several I like better than the originals and the Joe Cocker cover you posted is one of them. (Another is Elton John singing Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds), Lucy was a staple of my early and mid childhood. I've visited her grave outside of Jamestown, New York. What a talent she was!
ReplyDeleteThis is Birgit…my best friend and I were in Jamestown as well and visited her gravesite and the many others in her family. I. So glad you like the ABBA song which I really love. I love Elton John’s rendition of Lucy.. I heard this version first before the Beatles. Joe Cocker made this song his own.
DeleteI remember that I Love Lucy episode with great fondness. Thanks for the reminder, Birgit! ☺ ABBA's song was unfamiliar (I'm not a fan), and I have to agree with Loretta on this one. Joe Cocker is my favourite here. It's one of the best cover versions ever recorded, IMO.
ReplyDeleteFirst friendship song that came to mind was James Taylor's You've Got A Friend.
It's wonderful that you and Loretta have been friends for so long! ♥ These types of friendships are rare and should be treasured. My best friend of 40+ years passed away in 2021 and I miss her every day.
I have no idea what I would do without my best friend..the world would not be the same. I had a feeling you would not like the ABBA song…I find it one of my favs. You chose a great song.
DeleteI met my oldest friend on our first day in secondary school in 1968 so we’ll be heading for 60 years soon. I didn’t know that ABBA song but there was something very Scottish about it to me (it sounded like accordions at the beginning, also we’re quite good at maudlin songs).
ReplyDeleteMet my best friend in second grade. In 1965.
DeleteI have a friend, whom I have not seen in a long time, but she will always be a part of my heart and we met in Kindergarten. I’m glad you like that ABBA song which does sound Scottish.
DeleteThat's great you are still good friends.
ReplyDeleteI cherish her every day
DeleteThis made me wish I remembered the exact date I met my best friend so we could have an anniversary lol
ReplyDeleteHey…as long as you recall the year, tht works out well.
DeleteI've known my best friend for 61 years. What a joy.
ReplyDeleteThat’s great!
DeleteHi Birgit - love this ... my best friend sadly died v early in life. I've some good ones 'acquired' since!! Some of those choices are great - here's to more years - cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteThat’s so sad that you lost your best friend way too early. I’m sorry she passed when she still had her whole life ahead of her. I am glad you found more friends.
DeleteI've had many really good friends, and there are different songs that remind me of all of them individually. But there's ONE song that pretty much captures all of them at once, and that song is...

What a great song and you have some excellent memories of your friends. We are very lucky to be blessed with such friends. That’s a great song!
DeleteHello Birgit, It's CAAC here. I'm sorry for being late to stop by. The malware attack on my old host site blog really messed things up good. I have a new host and am working on a temporary url to restore things. I got the content moved but the images aren't showing up, so I have to manually plug them in to each post. Talk about a job. Working backwards, I'm fixing to do October of last year if that tells you how slow this process is. My domain has been moved and hopefully it will be up soon.
ReplyDeleteOkay enough ranting about my woes, right? :D 40 year friendship is awesome. The 80s seem like yesterday. I'm blessed to have several of my earliest childhood friends still around like my bestie from kindergarden. The years zip by, don't they? I loved your theme and music!
Thanks for joining the fun. Have a boogietastic weekend, darlin'! xo
This is Birgit and I’m so sorry you have been hacked, I hate these people…I hope, one day, they are stopped!. I’m glad you like the music and, yes, the 80s , do seem like yesterday.
