Thursday Movie Picks:TV Efition-Rivalries

Merry Christmas and have a great New Year! So, I thought I would get back into the swing of things and ...I didn’t. It’s been crazy between working full time, and all the Christmas stuff to do on top of my pain, my friend  visiting me, blah blah blah, I am behind again. Christmas Day was a day of complete rest and I basically slept. We are not going to my hubby’s sister’s place until Friday because of her work. Saturday, I see my best friend and Sunday I am being treated to a beautiful concert at Hamilton Place with a  Full Viennese concert. I am so looking forward to this. The last post for this year on Wandering Through The Shelves is the tv edition and it is to showcase rivalries. My mind is not working on full throttle but I hope I came up with 3 that work.

1. THE BUGS BUNNY/ROAD RUNNER HOUR-1968-1978

Ok these original cartoons were actually shown with feature films for Warner Bros. MGM had Tom and Jerry, Warner’s had the great Bugs, Elmer, Daffy Wiley E Coyote, Road Runner, Porky Pig, Sylvester, Tweety Bird, LongHorn Egg-horn (is that right??) plus so many more. Many of these cartoons are hilarious since they were actually for adults more than kids (“I Knight thee Cirrhosis of Liver”) but as a kid, I loved them and never thought of them as violent and thought it stupid when they were censored them especially since I am against censorship. Wiley E was always trying to kill and eat the Road Runner but the Road Runner always got the better of him. Actually, Bugs got the better of him as well. Sylvester always tried to eat Tweety Bird and they were both trying to win the affection of Granny along with the bulldog. I think my favourite was the new puppy and Clyde the cat..poor Clyde who loved filing his nails on a filing saw. Love these shows.

2. DYNASTY-198

What can I say about this glossy show which was all about shoulder pads, back stabbing and chewing the scenery. The Carrington Family are filthy rich headed by John Forsythe who married his secretary, Linda Evans. We meet his kids, one good and one smarmy plus their wives, girlfriends and one night stands. Season 2 brings his ex wife, Joan Collins who really knew how to bitch across the scene and bitch slap Linda. A fun and campy soap that I preferred over Dallas.

3. THE DREW CAREY SHOW-1995-2004

I wish this show was more well known because it was funny. It was about Drew Carey who worked in management at a department store who had to deal with his jerk boss and his nemesis,  Mimi, who could give it right back and was nasty. He has 3 good friends, 2 dopey guys and a girl whom he secretly loves. Thre are many antics but they always make it funny. I love that Shirley Jones plays  Carey's mom.

Which tv show can you think up? I will be commenting on my previous post to catch up and vhecki

  1. A Merry Christmas to you too Birgit!!

LOVE that you went with the Road Runner!! A perfect fit! I use to watch them with my sister every Saturday morning when we got up before my parents.

I never watched Drew Carey's show but we have a match!! Dynasty really was the ne plus ultra of soaps in the 80's and no one did silky bitchery better than Joan Collins. Talk about a perfect meeting of actress and role! I started watching for Linda Evans who I'd always loved on The Big Valley but Joan kept me tuning in.

With the holidays I also did a bit of a catch all but loved all three of these shows when they were on and still will watch my first whenever I run across it.

The Golden Girls (1985-1992) Three widows and a divorcee-Dorothy (Beatrice Arthur), Rose (Betty White), Blanche (Rue McClanahan) and Dorothy’s mother Sophia (Estelle Getty)-share a home and a close friendship in Miami. Along with that friendship comes multiple times when the various women were pitted against each other in rivalries for men, bowling trophies or just the plain upper hand. Timeless comedy with four of the best comic actresses ever.

Dynasty (1981-1989) Blake Carrington (John Forsythe) runs oil giant Denver-Carrington while his glamorous scheming ex-wife Alexis (Joan Collins) and present wife Krystle (Linda Evans) are locked in a constant rivalry which escalates through the years. In the era of conspicuous consumption this show reigned supreme and set the tone for over the top luxury (and shoulder pads!) with Collins leading the way.

Revenge (2011-2015) Emily Thorne (Emily Van Camp) arrives in the Hamptons and immediately crosses swords with reigning doyenne Victoria Grayson (Madeleine Stowe) who feels she isn’t who she appears to be. Her intuition is right Emily is actually Amanda Clarke whose father Victoria and her husband had destroyed years before and now she’s back to extract revenge. Week after week the two go head to head in a rivalry that becomes increasingly deadly as Emily/Amanda seeks to ruin Victoria’s family and life.

    1. Don’t you just love the Road Runner series....there are so many that are favourites of mine. I’m glad we match with Dynasty and I think they even competed with t(wit shoulder pads. The Golden Girls a4e lots of fun and wish I would have thought of them. I watch a couple of episodes of Revenge and it was good but it seemed to switch times and I lost it.

  2. I think you mean "Foghorn Leghorn." There were all kinds of great rivalries on that show: Bugs and Elmer Fudd, Bugs and Yosemite Sam, Bugs and Daffy Duck, Sylvester and Tweety, Foghorn Leghorn and Henery the Chicken Hawk, to name but a few. And you're absolutely right: until sometime in the mid-'60's, cartoons were adult entertainment. Hanna-Barbera was one of the first studios to make cartoons specifically for the kids' audience on TV (Huckleberry Hound, Yogi Bear, Quick Draw McGraw, Jinks the cat and Pixie and Dixie--there's another great rivalry, Tom and Jerry--still another rivalry, Magilla Gorilla, Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy, Snagglepuss, Top Cat etc. etc.), but they also did The Flintstones (who early on did commercials for their sponsor, Winston cigarettes) and The Jetsons, two primetime cartoons aimed initially at a more mature audience. And let's not forget Popeye and Bluto, a rivalry from the fevered imagination of Max Fleischer, who were definitely aimed at an adult audience.

I'm into cartoons; what can I say?

    1. I. So glad you are into cartoons and thank you for correcting me regarding the great Foghorn who not only had the rivalry with the dog but that egghead. Love the Hanna-Barbera cartoons also.

  3. Hi, Birgit!

I'm happy to know you had a restful Christmas, dear friend. If you ask me, they're the best kind.

As a boy I watched Bugs Bunny and any other cartoons with sophisticated humor that also appealed to adults. If a cartoon or live-action show was dumbed-down for kids, I wasn't interested. I didn't watch Dynasty but never missed The Drew Carey Show. Diedrich Bader, who played Drew's buddy "Oswald," remains one of the busiest character actors in movies and TV. I had a crush on Christa Miller who played "Kate" on Drew Carey and "Jordan" on Scrubs.

One of the best TV rivalries is Adrian Monk and his rival Harold Krenshaw on Monk. One of the earliest rivalries I can recall is Martin "Marty" Markham and Spin Evans on the Disney series Spin and Marty which aired as part of The Mickey Mouse Club in the mid 50s.

Happy new year to you, dear friend BB!

    1. I. Glad you watched The Drew Carey show and loved that one character played by Diedrich Bader. There was always a rivalry going on on that show. I have yet to watch Monk and what Inhave seen I really like and Tony Shalhoub is such a great actor.

  5. Looney Toons is such an inspired choice. When I was writing this post I never thought of going back an examining cartoons. It seems so obvious now. lol

  6. Sure 3 great choices indeed. I haven't watched much of the Drew Carey Show, heard it mentioned on Whose Line it is anyway though a bunch. Revenge comes to mind as one recent one.

  7. Sounds a bit like my Christmas last year. Rest is good.

I loved the Bugs Bunny cartoons as a kid. Never got into Dynasty (it was on too late for kid me, anyway). And I may not have watched the Drew Carey Show, but I was aware of it. It started when I worked swing shift, so during that era, watching TV was hit or miss for me. (If only DVRs had been around then...)

    1. Who doesn’t love Bugs and the gang. What did we do when there was no DVR or even video?

  8. Hi sis, some of the best rivalries were between Batman and Robin and the wide variety of villains they faced in the 1960s TV show. Funny, they always thwarted the criminals but could never put them away long term. They must have had excellent defense attorneys!

    1. Hahaaaa...I always thought the same thing and thought Batman and Robin must have screwed up the evidence. Holy Defence Attorney!

  9. Sounds like some good rivalries. And enjoy your weekend ahead. It sounds like it will be a good time. Happy New year. Hugs-Erika

  10. I'm late to the party, but want to wish you a happy holiday. So glad to read you slept most of Christmas. I'm sure you needed it. And it sounds like you needed it to save up for the fun things you have planned for the rest of the week.

Even though it was TV, I never saw any of these tv shows. I never got into either Dallas or Dynasty. I was probably one of three people in the world who didn't know (or care) who shot J.R. I'm not into comedy. I can't stand laugh tracks, so I never saw Drew Carey. Your synopses sound great, though.

  12. Did watch a bit of Drew Carey in the past. But, as you know, I am not much of a TV watcher. Sorry you have been so busy Birgit and having to cope with pain as well, I know how that goes. Happy New Year to you and wishing you all the best.

  13. The Drew Carey Show - isn't it well known though? I mean it did run for 9 seasons and it got showed internationally which was how I saw it when I was growing up.

  14. Birgit,

Belated Christmas wishes to you, darlin'! It's been a hectic month, hasn't it? I can't believe we're at the end of another year, either. Yikes, it all goes by way too fast! You know, I don't think I've ever watched a single episode of the Drew Carey Show but I really like him as a host on TPIR. The first TV series to come to mind for this theme is the 80s nightly drama, DALLAS. That was a awesome show and even the reboot that didn't stick around long was quite good. I hated that it didn't run longer than it did. I guess with JR gone from the scene the producers thought maybe it wouldn't go any further. I don't but they had something, in my opinion, if they just kept at it. Here's hoping for nothing but good things to come your way in 2020 - good health, happiness, and prosperity!

  15. Good ones! I love Looney Tunes.

Rivalry is tricky - different from run-of-the-mill animosity. The Odd Couple, for instance, doesn't quite work.

    Happy New Year!

  16. These are great choices, Birgit. The rivalry of Bugs Bunny and his friends would make for a good Ph.d. thesis for someone. lol Once upon a time I wrote a college sociology paper on my comparative study of TV cartoons from the 1930s to current times. hahaha. Cheers to a Grand 2020, Birgit!
