Weekly Song Challenge: Week 14

Another week gone by and I hope everyone had a good Easter. I was busy and didn’t make any cards this weekend hence no post earlier. Jingle, Jangle, Jungle created this weekly series where you find songs that fit the 3 themes she chose and here are the 3...

A Song With  “Face” in the Title

A Song with “Fast” in the Title

A Song with “Fire” in the Title

1. FIRST TIME EVER I SAW YOUR FACE SUNG BY ROBERTA FLACK IN 1972

I  heard this song when I was little and thought it was drippy and I would yawn but, over the years, I grew to appreciate the way she sang this. I had no idea that this song was, originally, a folk song written by Scottish Ewan MacColl for his lady love, Peggy Seeger, back in 1957. Roberta Flack made it a huge hit in '72 and was showcased in the Clint Eastwood film, "Play Misty For Me."

2.  LIFE IN THE FAST LANE BY THE EAGLES-1976

This is the only song that came into my head so I will look forward to what everyone will choose. It was written by Joe Walsh, Glenn Frey and Don Henley with Walsh being singled out for his guitar riff etc... I just thought it was a cool song.

3. LIGHT MY FIRE BY THE DOORS-RELEASED IN 1967

You must be living under a rock if you don't know this famous song sung by the sexy, sultry, destructive Jim Morrison. I know I first heard this song and other Doors songs from my brother whom I consider an expert when it comes to Rock music, Blues and probably some other genres I am not aware of. My brother would buy the records and, later tapes (yes, cassette tapes) to listen in his car while he drove us to school. I had a huge crush on this Morrison(I know, stand in line) before I even knew he was already dead. What a great song...one of many.

Let's see what you all can come up with.

  1. Hi, Birgit!

I have come to take the weekly Song Challenge with you, dear friend!

It's a coincidence that you posted "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and mentioned it being featured in Clint Eastwood's psycho thriller film Play Misty For Me.

A: I saw that movie upon its release in 1971.
    B. Jessica Walter, the female lead in the movie, died a couple of weeks ago at the age of 80.
    C. Lovely blonde co-star Donna Mills, an "it girl" of the period, is still with us and will be 81 later this year. Can you believe she's that old?

Yessum, I well remember "Life In The Fast Lane," a cool song and hit single for The Eagles. "Light MY Fire" is special to me because, when it showed up on the Shady Dell jukebox, it signaled a fundamental shift in the Dell's musical menu, from a steady diet of doo-wop ballads and sweet soul to a more eclectic mix of traditional sounds mentioned above and the new wave of psychedelic rock, garage rock, British rock, folk rock and other subgenres of rock that were rapidly emerging in 1967.

My song picks are as follows:

FACE SONG: "I've Just Seen A Face," the Paul McCartney song recorded by The Beatles and released in the U.S. on their 1965 album Rubber Soul.

FAST SONG: "Growin' Up Too Fast," a song penned by Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio and waxed by Diane ("Navy Blue") Renay. Released in June, 1964, "Growin' Up Too Fast" sold poorly, peaking on the Bubbling Under chart at #124. History has been kind, however. Today the recording is lauded as one of Diane's best.

FIRE SONG: "Fire Woman" by the British rock band The Cult, a 1989 single that peaked at #2 in the U.S. on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart and reached #46 on the Hot 100.

Have a wonderful day, dear friend BB. I'll see you tamale "At The Movies!"

    1. Yes, I was surprised that Jessica Walter died...she is funny in Archer-a great Animation show that is not for kids! I will be listening to your choices when I get a chance.

  4. Excellent choices! I rather disliked the Roberta Flack song when it first came out and then I listened carefully to it and began to like it a great deal. It's a beautiful song.

  8. I do love that Roberta Flack song. I'm not really into the Eagles as I do like some of their songs but I also hate some of their acoustic/country stuff like "Peaceful Easy Feeling" but I do like "Life in the Fast Lane". "Light My Fire" is a great Doors song though I do think Jim Morrison is a bit overrated as a pop culture figure. Still, the long version of the song is great.

    1. I’m not much into the country songs either but I do love this song and some others.people do go a bit crazy for Morrison and I bet he is sitting in a cafe somewhere with Elvis and James Dean,

  9. I would instantly have chosen the same songs for one and three, though Fire by Arthur Brown and Wheels on Fire by Julie Driscoll would not have been far behind. My first thought for two was Fast Car by Tracy Chapman.
