Weekly Song Challenge

This is another week and I think it is week 19 for the song challenge. Jingle, Jangle, Jungle has created a fun weekly challenge where you choose a song that fits the theme. I went off my "first thought of a song" this week because I wanted something Canadian and something with my birthday month(June). Here are the 3 themes:

A SONG WITHA COUNTRY IN THE TITLE

A SONG THAT MENTIONS A TYPE OF WEATHER IN THE TITLE

A SONG WITH A MONTH IN THE TITLE

1. THIS IS A SONG THAT WILL ONLY MAKE SENSE TO CANADIANS BY JON BRETT-2020

I wanted to choose something a bit quirky but fun without a lot of grandiosing, not sure if that is a word but, ask if I care. I never realized that you never say Pop and only say soda..weird. I found it especially weird when I ordered fish and chips and got...potato chips..WTF?? That is a snack you eat when watching a movie or a game. Anyway, just so you know, you pronounce Z as Zed not Zee...you guys are weird :)

2. STORMY WEATHER-1933-SUNG BY JUDY GARLAND

When I bought this album and heard Judy sing this song, I was floored. It's as if you hear her pain and anguish when singing this. I found it breathtaking. I know Lena Horne sang it in the 1943 film of the same name but this is the one that makes me think this 1933 song by Harold Arlen & Ted Koehler belongs to Judy. I know there are many versions but love this one.

3. JUNE IN JANUARY-1934-SUNG BY BING CROSBY

I got 2...2 months in one! I will be 57 in June..wow!! I still feel like I am 30 except for the aches and pains..hahahaa. I came across this ditty which was written by Ralph Rainger and Leo Robin for the 1934 film, Here Is My Heart. I think it's a nice song actually.

I am still bruised up inside from last week but I am glad to have that operation and it only take me longer to heal because of my Ehlers-Danlos. I am on the road to improvement which is the best thing. Now I have to leave you with this... I hope you watch this.

I AM CANADIAN COMMERCIAL!

  1. Hi, Birgit!

How are things in The Great White North, dear friend? BTW, do you happen to know Jimmy, Sally or Susie from Canada? :) Yessum, I love that spot at the end. I'm all about diversity and it's good to know Canadians are, too. Also, I never met a beaver I didn't like. :)

I am here to take the Weekly Song Challenge with you, dear friend. Your posting of the song that only makes sense to Canadians is appreciated because it is loaded with interesting tidbits.

I'm not surprised you went old school in your other two song picks. That is again appreciated because they remind us there was popular music before Elvis and The Beatles. Your choice of "Stormy Weather" sung by Judy Garland immediately brought to mind our hometown heroes The Magnificent Men. The white soul band from Central PA, USA, covered "Stormy Weather" and it became one of their signature songs. The Mag Men version of the song was used in the OST of the 2003 Sly Stallone movie Shade.

I also enjoyed The Binger doing "June In January." Didn't we just do a "month" song a couple of weeks ago? Remember I chose "First Of May" by the Bee Gees?

    Here are my song picks:

COUNTRY SONG: "Norwegian Wood," penned mainly by John Lennon and released by The Beatles on their Rubber Soul album.

WEATHER SONG: "Storm Warning" by The Volcanos, a regional hit in the summer of 1965 in Philly and along the East Coast including my neck of the woods. The Volcanos evolved into The Trammps, one of the major acts of the Disco era.

MONTH SONG: I'm sticking with my Magnificent Men in choosing their version of the popular standard "September Song," released on the Mag Men's 1968 album The World Of Soul.

I am very happy to know you are on the road to improvement having reached the intersection of wellness and fiddlefit. Enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend BB!

  3. I love your three songs. Had to laugh at your take on soda and chips. Yes, I knew about zed, but the rest were so fun to watch. I think the commercial may have been as funny as the Canadian song. In fact, I laughed even louder at the commercial.

The only song I heard before today was Stormy Weather. These are great examples of what was requested. Let me be the first to wish you a happy birthday this month, dear. And I hope you are feeling better each and every day after your surgery.

  4. OMG. I can't believe I chose two of your songs. I thought of America The Beautiful for the first song but picked the other two.
BTW, I had a friend who had moved to Detroit from Philly. She asked me if I wanted a soda and I said "no". When she got herself a coke, I told her I would have some pop. She asked me what 'pop' was.

    1. No thanks! I don't want soda and I don't want pop.

I'll stick with soft drinks. :)

  7. Hi sis! For a song with a country in it, I have to go with the South American standard, "Brazil." For a weather song, "Still Raining, Still Dreaming" by Jimi Hendrix. The intro to that song and the way Jimi gets his guitar to "talk" still gives me chills. Eventually the song falls into an incredibly deep groove. I've long thought this was one of his most underrated songs. And for a month, I'll do a 180 and go to Willie Nelson's version of "September." Poignant and heartfelt. This was one of the songs that helped turn me on to Willie as an American classic.

  8. So sorry I'm late getting here! It's been a crazy week for me. I LOVE your song choices. I'm having a birthday in June as well. I'll be 56. Thank you so much for joining in!

  9. Birgit,

What's this, you had surgery last week? Did I miss that bulletin? I'm not surprised if I did. Anywho, glad you're recouping well. I considered using June in January cover by Julie London. Nice song picks! Thanks for sharing. Now, take plenty good care of yourself, my dear! ;)
