Weekly Song Challenge

I actually listened to all your suggestions and read the comments but I have had a most difficult week last week and it is extending into this week. Anyway, enough crap, Check out Jingle, Jangle, Jungle for her latest themes and here they are...

A SONG WITH A FLOWER IN THE TITLE

A SONG WITH A TYPE OF COIN IN THE TITLE

A SONG WITH AN OCCUPATION IN THE TITLE

1. DESERT ROSE SUNG BY STING-1999

When I first heard this song, I was really taken in with it. I found it haunting and I am not a huge Sting fan but he did a great job. I think it is one of his better songs.

2. 10 CENTS A DANCE SUNG BY RUTH ETTING-1930

I love this song and first heard it when Doris Day sang it, playing Ruth Etting, in a biography about her (Love Me or Leave Me). Somehow, this Rogers and Hart song (yes, before Rogers joined with Hammerstein) really got to me and I love the original Ruth Etting number.

3. THE TOREADOR SONG SUNG BY DMITRI HVOROSTOVSKY-2014

OK, hate me, it's an opera song but I have listened to many songs that I don't care for so...so there...lol. I love Carmen which is by Georges Bizet from 1875. There are many famous pieces from this one opera including this great one which is about the bullfighter whom Carmen sets her sights on. It has been done by many, many people but this man just got to me...what a shame he died in 2017 from brain cancer.

Now for your amusement....

  1. Hi, Birgit!

I'm sorry you are falling behind in your blogging activity, dear friend, but now I know it is for a good reason. As I told you on my blog, I am not registered on FB or other social media, and therefore remain out of the loop as to exactly what is happening on your side of the screen regarding your hubby. Again, I hope it all works out for the best. I am thinking about you, dear friend.

Now, let's turn to your WSC choices. I liked The Police more than Sting as a solo artist. I wasn't familiar with the song "Desert Rose" or the music video, but I enjoyed both and the song is a good pick for the category.

Like you, I thoroughly enjoyed that 1930 Ruth Ettling recording of "10 Cents A Dance." Adjusting for the cost of living, a "dime a dance girl" costs $14,777.85 today.

Leave it to BB (hey, that could be the name of a new TV series!... Leave it to BB to pick an opera performance for the WSC, in this case "The Toreador Song" from the opera Carmen.

I enjoyed that bonus clip from the fourth episode of the third season of Gilligan's Island in which the castaways stage a musical version of Hamlet and perform that same number, "The Toreador Song" from Carmen. That episode, "The Producer," with guest star Phil Silvers at his shifty best, is one of the highest ranked episodes of the series.

    HERE ARE MY PICKS:

FLOWER SONG: "Red Roses for a Blue Lady" by crooner Vic Dana. Penned and first waxed in 1948, the song was a top 10 hit for Dana in 1965, and versions by Wayne Newton and instrumentalist Bert Kaempfert charted simultaneously.

COIN SONG: "If I Didn't Have A Dime (To Play The Jukebox)" by Gene Pitney. Released in August of 1962 on the B side of Gene's hit single "Only Love Can Break A Heart," "If I Didn't Have A Dime" charted as well, reaching #58 on the Hot 100.

OCCUPATION SONG: I'm gonna get creative with this one and go with a song from my childhood, a 45 that my parents bought and one that I played often on my tiny tinny turntable. It's "Chain Gang," a single by jazz singer, pianist, composer and arranger Bobby Scott that made a run at the top 10 on the pop chart in February and March of 1956. This song, with the lyrics "They put me on the chain gang, chan gang, chain gang..." is not to be confused with the song about the men workin' on the "Chain Gang" that was a hit million seller for Sam Cooke in 1960. However, by mentioning that other song, I score DOUBLE points for this prompt!

I hope your week takes a turn for the better and soon, dear friend BB. I hope to see you again tamale in the balcony "At The Movies!"

    1. Trying to reply right away. I enjoyed all your choices and really liked If I Didn't Have a Dime. I never heard that before and it is really nice. I like the Chain Gang song and the twist in the occupation. I am glad you enjoyed my choices:) My hubby is still in the hospital....so frustrating.

    1. All 3 are fun and I laugh at the last one. I sang that when I was a kid in school.

  3. Good choice for the first one. Rose of Sharyn by Killswitch Engage comes to mind.

    1. Yes, I bet the 3rd song is not to your liking:) I had a really tough time listening to your choice as I find it so unsettling and...evil to be honest.

  4. Good choices! I really liked the Gilligan's Island tribute to Bizet, especially with Phil Silvers in it.

  5. I am a Sting and Police fan, but am not familiar with that song. I had never heard the other two, but I enjoyed learning about them, none-the-less.

Sorry I have no idea what happened with your husband because I am ONLY a blogger. However, my thoughts are with you, dear.

  8. I'm sorry to hear about your hardships. But look at you, still plowing ahead with your blog. That's dedication. Good luck that everything settles soon.

I would have picked Seal's "Kiss from a Rose." I know it's lame, but I'm a sucker for that sung and it's the first thing that popped in my head. :-P

  9. It's late, but I'm here! Thanks for playing along. I enjoyed reading your friends choices. I surely do wish they would actually join in the hop, as it would make it so much better :)

Sorry to hear you havent been feeling well. Once you have that surgery, you will feel a lot better (not right away, but about 5 to 6 weeks out) and I do hope your husband comes home soon and is able to get rid of that stone.

  10. Mary,

Your song picks are all new-to-me. I thought I should know Sting's song but it didn't ring any bells. I loved the Gilligan's Island clip. I always wondered as a kid how the crew always had costumes such as this to put on the theatrical performance to be marooned. Did you think those things, too? lol

  11. Hi Birgit, I hope you feel better as the week progresses. Love your song choices! I'm not a huge fan of Sting's either, but this was good. And Carmen is one of my favourite operas. ♥ The Gilligan's Island parody is hilarious. Thanks for the laugh! ☺
