F for Errol Flynn

BORN: June 20, 1909

DIED: October 14, 1959

AGED: 50-heart attack-Oh hell his whole body was a wreck, that hell raiser

MARRIED:  3 Times-Lili Damita, Patrice Wymore

AFFAIRS: Where do you think "In Like Flynn" came from! Numerous affairs, apparently bisexual and had affairs with Tyrone Power and Howard Hughes(really??)

FAMOUS PARTNERS: Olivia De Havilland

FAMOUS ROOMMATE: David Niven-David was only into women so they made the most of it as a couple of bad boys chasing after the gals

You Tasmanian Devil you! He was born there, very handsome, had mother issues. He was up for statutory rape with 2 gals that he took on his boat-he was found innocent(As the driven slush). Travelled to Spain during their Civil War and there is speculation he took part in that war. There are also claims he was a Nazi spy but only claims so far. He loved Olivia De Havilland and she liked him but she knew his ways and avoided his advances. Had numerous health problems, was an alcoholic and everything else in between. Devil may care attitude.

FILMS: Captain Blood, Adventures of Robin Hood, Sante Fe Trail, They Died With Their Boots On.

  1. I was getting him mixed up with Howard Hughes as I was reading this. I didn't realize he was such a mess...just a player!

    1. Oh he was a player big time. The thin moustaches were in then so Howard Hughes had it too

  2. He was handsome. I never knew all those things about Errol Flynn, Birgit. Famous people seem to get away with quite a lot (especially sex crimes), even today.
    I'm enjoying your A-Z.

    1. Oh boy-yes they got away with alot and they had the studios behind them to back them up and hide evidence, cover things up. What's amazing is that his popularity soared even bigger after the rape trial

  3. It's amazing how the brightest sparks burn out so young. I guess I'm glad I'm plodding along. :)

  4. Wow. I didn't know "In Like Flynn!" came from him! He is a fascinating fellow, isn't he? I have learned so many famous, passionate people also have sexual partners that are rather... well? Varied. I wonder if their creativity just sparks them in many different directions.

Fascinating. Thank you for coming to my blog to comment and thank you for writing such an intriguing A to Z!

  5. You're welcome! I think the entertainment industry always looks like a bit of a pleasure palace to some people and mix in money and fame and you have a possible pot boiler going on. Good ole Errol loved to stay busy and really didn't check the birth certificates of the girls-If they looked good well....he had fun

  6. Love me some Errol Flynn. His portrayals of Captain Blood and Robin Hood are classics. He also did good work in somewhat lesser known films like Dodge City, The Sea Hawk, Gentleman Jim, the remake of Dawn Patrol (though the original is a better film). One of his final films, 1957's The Sun Also Rises, was a beautiful yet tragic performance. Supposedly he was in talks with Kubrick to star as Humbert Humbert in Lolita - which, considering some of the stories about the actor (some corroborated, others not), would have been rather an intriguing role.

Have fun AtoZing. See ya 'round the web. All Things Kevyn

    1. Too bad he died before he could do Lolita-if that is true, I never heard of that story. Thank you for mentioning the other films esp. the Sun Also Rises. All are great (I agree with Dawn Patrol)

  7. I knew he was promiscuous, but didn't know about the young girls. A lot of celebrity sex trials over here at the moment (very distasteful).

    1. It is disgusting isn't it. I think Errol knew they were young but he didn't know quite how young and he didn't care really-a real hedonist

  8. And that's probably the cleaned-up version. The big film companies had such power over their stars and their media reporting that I expect he got away with a lot more.

    Very dashing, though!

  10. He shall forever be Robin Hood in my mind. I was watching something the other day that mentioned him being from Tasmania, which then made me wonder if the Tasmanian Devil in the Bugs Bunny cartoons was based on him rather than the animal.
