Thursday Movie Picks-Step-Families

Grrrrrrrr-My hubby decided to download Windows 10.....need I say more! So I have been trying to download the pictures I saved and it looks like it works but when I press "Continue", it just will not go anywhere!! I wish he would not have downloaded this but try and stop Mr. ADHD Man.

OK So this week at Wandering Through The Shelves, the topic is Step-Families.  I picked 2 semi-older films and one newer one...at least to me. So without any more computer #$%^$@! here is my list.

1. With Six You Get Eggroll

OK-This is so annoying! I can't seem to download the pictures this Wednesday eve so I have to do this at work(shhhhh). I hate this!!! Oh...right...no more bitching. OK, so this film stars Doris Day with a really bad hairdo and Brian Keith, whom I love (Yes I watched Hardcastle and McCormick), in a romantic comedy where they meet on a blind date. It doesn't go well right at first but as all these movies go, they fall in love much to the displeasure of her 3 sons and his daughter. Even the 2 dogs don't get along. It co-stars George Carlin in his film debut and there are 2 hippies you will recognize from M.A.S.H-Jamie Farr (Klinger) and William Christopher (Father Mulcahy). It's a fun film to see even if it is not a major "Oh Wow-what a great film" movie to see.

2.  Yours, Mine, and Ours-1968

This stars Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda as to adults, with way too many kids each, meet, fall in love and marry. This is based on a true story by the way. Even though Lucille Ball is a little too old to have such a young child, this film is fun and sweet. I love it when the kids get the Lucy character drunk but how she doesn't know there is alcohol in her drink is beyond me. This film is much better than the remake.

3.  Ever After-1998

I love fairy tales. I read them when I was a kid and thought they were quite justified to have the wicked stepmom dance in red hot boots-she was bad so the bad get their just desserts. Anyway this film stars Drew Barrymore and she was never better. In fact, I would say she gave one of her better performances here. This is a take on the Cinderella story and makes it more realistic. Her father marries, but shortly after croaks as fathers do in fairy tales. This leaves her daughter with her not so nice step mom played by the great Angelica Huston. Drew can stand up for herself and along the way befriends not only the prince but Leonardo Da Vinci. I enjoyed this film immensely.

So there ya go! These are my three. Now let's hope I can download pictures in the near future or that volcano that has erupted will be caused by my screaming.

I am a bad girl-I had to download them here at work-I hate that!

  1. Ever After is a terrific pick! It is a wonderful re-imagining of the story and both Drew and Anjelica Huston do great work, as well as Judy Parfitt and Timothy West as the King and Queen.

Yours, Mine and Ours is turning up all over the place today as it should, thank goodness everyone is choosing the original, that remake is total crap. It is a pleasant lightweight movie, I remember my mom, sister and I along with a couple of neighborhood kids piling into the station wagon and going to see it the first time at the local drive-in.

I picked With Six...too! It's hokey now but I still love it, and I agree about Doris's hair!

Here are mine for the week:

The Brady Bunch Movie (1995)-Taking the quintessential 70's blended sitcom family and transporting them to the 90's but keeping them firmly locked in their time is a perfect way of updating the material and this is a goofy and fun picture.

With Six You Get Eggroll (1968)-Widow Doris Day who has three young sons and widower Brian Keith a teenage daughter, played by a very young Barbara Hershey, fall for each other and decide to marry but run into problems when the kids resist making any concessions. Light, pleasant farce was Doris’s feature film swan song.

Tomorrow, the World! (1944)-A young German boy who has been recently orphaned comes to America to live with his spinster aunt (Agnes Moorehead), widowed uncle (Fredric March), the uncle’s teenage daughter and his future wife (Betty Field). Problems arise when it turns out he is a Hitler youth thoroughly indoctrinated in Nazi propaganda. While the family tries to make a home for him and basically deprogram him he resists and goes out of his way to be cruel to his uncle's fiancĂ©e, a Jewess, and does everything possible to tear the family apart. The film can be somewhat pat at times but it does try and tackle a complex subject.

    1. I had a feeling Yours, Mine and Ours would be everywhere. I am shocked at myself(senility moment) that I forgot about Pan's Labyrinth and The Sound Of Music (although I giggle at Christopher Plummer calling it the Sound of Mucus). Glad you pick With 6 because that is just a fun film. I have never heard of that last film and now I must see it!! I wonder if the kid ever wakes up or does he start wearing a mustache??

  3. Oh noooo, you've got Windows 10 downloaded!!!! I've heard the horror stories and have blocked the Windows Updates download feature on my computer.

I saw Yours, Mine and Ours when I was a kid and remember finding it hysterical..Lucille Ball was, in my opinion, one of the best comedic actors ever to be born. I've never seen the remake though.

Ever After was fantastic and I agree with you, it was one of Drews best performances. Actually it was after seeing her in that role that I began to realize that she had real substance as an actress and started following her career.

    1. If it would have been my choice, I would not have downloaded it but my hubby was all excited and now i have this problem-Grrrrrrr Lucille Ball is a great comedian. Drew was great and shows she can do better work than she has done

  7. Blah to windows 10, I ignored that stupid download thing. I'll wait until it actually works and they have all the kinks fixed.

Seen the last two at my zoo, Yours mine and ours was fun. Ever After was much better than the crap Drew does with Adam Sandler.

    1. Yes I hate this but my hubby wants it on so now we have this stupid thing. Thankfully my ex will be coming over to fix the issues soon. I didn't mind The Wedding Singer or 40 Dates but they are fun things not showing her true acting chops.

I haven't seen any of these, but the one I've wanted to get around to is 'With Six You Get Eggroll'. Just the title alone grabs my interest.

  10. My Resident IT Consultant, aka husband, also downloaded Windows 10. In many ways I like it better than the horrible 8 but it won't upload the pictures from my iPad so we have the same problem. Windows seems to want us all to use One Drive which I am resisting So I hope RITC can find another solution. Fortunately I had already transferred all my Orkney / Shetland pics so can keep happily blogging until he does so.

  11. Hi, BB! I saw the first two movies when they hit the theaters in the late 60s. Actually, as I recall, I watched them at drive-in theaters whilst dating the future Mrs. Shady #1. Another movie that comes to mind that I remember seeing with her, another late 60s flick with a catchy three word title, was the Jerry Lewis comedy Hook, Line & Sinker (1969) with Peter Lawford and Anne Francis. Most of the movies I saw in the late 60s were at drive-ins. I love Doris Day movies and have seen every one of them. I also loved George Carlin.

Thanks for the memories, dear friend Birgit!

    1. I think I have seen that Jerry Lewis film. I enjoy Doris Day and love her with Rock Hudson. I consider George Carlin one of the most intelligent men ever to have been on this Earth. He amazes me with his knowledge of the English language. I remember going to the drive-in with my family and enjoyed it. We saw "Tidal Wave"-a bad film but the one before caught my eye more which is "The Last Valley". I also saw "Benji". Actually we have a drive-in near where I live and I think it is about time to go see a movie there.

  12. Great picks! There was a really scary movie called Stepfather, I think? John Travolta found out Vince Vaughn (the stepdad) was abusing his son and went all kickass on him? That's what I recall of it anyway!

    1. I don't think I know this film but it sounds good actually since Vince Vaughn usually plays comedy now.

  14. I knew Yours Mine and Ours would show up a lot today when I choose it as one of my picks last week(scheduled posting) but I still opted to include it.
I didn't care for Ever After, something just didn't click with me during that viewing.
Haven't seen With Six You Get Eggroll but I'm now intrigued. Gotta admit though, thats a strange title

    1. Yup that film showed up a lot and why I forgot about Pan's Labyrinth and The Sound of Music is beyond me. Oh bummer you didn't care for Ever After but that's what makes movies great-one person's like is anothers' WTF?? The title of the film is just what one of the kids say when they all go to a Chinese Restaurant.

  16. Interesting topic! I haven't seen any of your films. I'm actually a little surprised I can't think of more examples. Such a central fairy tale theme, after all.

When a Man Loves a Woman comes to mind, though alcoholism is the more important theme. I don't suppose the Brady movies count.

    1. Oh yes the Brady movies count! So does Pan's Labyrinth and The Sound of Music both films I forgot about until I saw them on other people's blogs:)

    2. Gee whiz - Sound of Music, of course! Once again, I feel like I'm missing something obvious...

  17. I've seen all the movies mentioned and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised with Ever After. It just didn't seem like a good vehicle for Drew Barrymore - but I loved it!

That's why I'll watch a movie and give it a shot even if I don't think it will be good. You just never know.

  19. Yay! I've seen all 3 movies. Ever After is my favorite of all Cinderella movies. Ella (was that her name? Can't remember) was bad-ass as Cinderella ought to be. I suppose she stuck it out with the stepmom & sisters because her parents stuff was in the house. Otherwise I thought Ella would've left long time ago.

  21. I am so glad now that I didn't download Windows 10. I'll continue to click on the X when the Free Windows 10 ad comes up. I'd choose Stepmom for your movie category.

  22. Those updates can be frustrating until you figure out what's going on. I got an Apple a while back and my frustration level has decreased dramatically.
We just subscribed to Netflix and we now have access to a lot of movies now. I think I'm really going to enjoy the service.

  23. I'm a huge Doris Day fan. Even awful hairstyles or ho-hum movies can stop me from loving her and that melting-chocolate voice. Lucy is almost as much of a fave. I don't care what she's in - she makes it shine! Drew Barrymore is pretty great too, though I only really like her in her comic roles. I've seen all these movie think you chose very well. Good luck with computer problems and have a great weekend! :)

    1. Oh Doris was always great and I loved her in quite a few films. I adore Lucy even when she played Mame. Drew is great in comedy and excellent in this role but I can drop the Charlie's Angels. I like the campy TV show much better.

  24. From what I understand about the Doris Day movie is that that was her last romantic comedy film (or last film, I forget which). Definitely a nice charming little film.

Same goes for the Henry Fonda/Lucille Ball film. The remake was garbage I think, because Hollywood nowadays to change a time period on a remake so that it pass their political limitus test.

BTW, there is no way in you know where that you will every get me to voluntarily use Windows 10.

  25. I've seen all three movies and of the three, liked "Ever After" the best. Remakes of old movies usually suck big-time! :P Case in point would be "Sabrina".
Windows 7 works great for me, so I'm not likely to change at this point. Too many people have had problems switching to Windows 10. Hope you get yours sorted out, Birgit.

  27. I have seen all of these three and like these enough to watch a few times. Ever After is probably my favorite of the three because I watched that one when it came out in the theaters, and I liked that the Cinderella in this one was not simply a damsel in distress. Actually, I purchased the movie for five dollars at Target back in 2005 when they were selling a bundle of DVDs called the Drew Barrymore collection. It also came with Fever Pitch

  30. I haven't seen Everafter... and I've just noticed a trend. We hardly ever watch current movies. Why is that? To busy or couldn't be bothered? Seen Eggroll and YMO. They weren't life changing but thoroughly enjoyable. I remember prolonged kissing scene in Eggroll and the extra large dog! Memories...
