Thursday Movie Picks-Love Triangles

We have seen films about love triangles and heard about such things in the news but have you ever been part of one? Have I ever been part of one? I'm not telling (I bet neither are you), but great books have been written about such romances and films have been made as well. Check out what the other people have chosen over at Wandering Through The Shelves.

By the way, I haven't been on much lately because my hubby wants his computer back after 5 years (or is it 6). We got the router re-programmed and ....my husband could not reconnect back on the internet! I don't know what he did but my ex came over this eve and my ex even tried, to no avail, so they added an extra cable so I could be on this tonight(Tuesday). I bought an I-Pad! Yahoooo!!!!!! Of course I can't use it because I need a router with a password so I can connect which we don't have because my hubby forgot the password and never marked it down which resulted in trying to reprogram it which still did not work...breathe...... Tomorrow(Wednesday) my hubby will buy a router, I will tell him what password to use and hopefully I will be up and running!! Sorry for the lengthy spiel. Onward to my 3 picks

1. THE PHILADELPHIA STORY-1940

This is a great comedy simply put. It starts off with the demise of a marriage-Cary Grant to the haughty Kate Hepburn which you see in the span of 30 seconds. You already know they are a match in more ways than one. A while later-couple a couple of years or  a few months, she is engaged and ready to marry a well established man. Since her family is well to do and often in the society pages, 2 reporters come to showcase the wedding. One of those reporters is played by my favourite actor, Jimmy Stewart. You get to meet her entire family who are all a bit nutty. Cary Grant is back, of course, giving Kate much conflagration(great word eh?). Of course, her fiancee is not amused by her ex hanging around and neither the fiancee or her ex are happy that Stewart's character is now falling for Kate as well. The great party the night before the wedding leads to all types of hi jinks including a late night skinny dip. Who will tame this Haughty gal? Watch the movie:)

2. DUEL IN THE SUN-1946

Or should it be called Lust in the Dust:) This is one crazy, nutty film that I love! I am actually surprised this film was made with all the censor boards going nuts. A gentle man takes in a young beautiful woman as his daughter even though she may be of Native American blood. When he dies, she is sent to live with his former flame played by the great Lilian Gish and her family. Her husband doesn't like it one bit but their 2 boys do...can we say Cain and Abel? OK it's not them but there is the good son played by the under-rated actor Joseph Cotton and the bad boy played by...Gregory Peck! The good guy treats her like a lady with respect while bad boy lusts after her like his hormones are on overdrive. Which will she choose? Hmmmmmmm

3. BANDITS-2001

I could have picked so many films but this is an under-rated gem. This is also a newer film (again for me). These 2 men, one cool and calm while the other a nervous hypochondriac but who is always polite, break out of prison and the two become bandits, although very nice bandits. They end up taking a hostage played by the wonderful Cate Blanchett who proceeds to drive them nuts! They are not sure what to do with her but soon they both fall for her and she for them. All three get into a mess of trouble especially when her twit husband realizes she doesn't want to go back. Do they get caught? Whom does she choose?

Which 3 would you pick?

  2. I still need to see all of these. I remember when Bandits just came and went. No one made much fuss about it so I didn't seek it out.

By the way, there is much irony that in a post about love triangles you tell of your ex coming by to fix something your husband screwed up.

  3. OMG! More Philadelphia Story love!!!

Love Bandits. Such a fun little flick. I have it chosen for another week coming up soon.

I purposefully avoided Duel in the Sun because I loathe Jennifer Jones with a passion.

  4. haven't ever seen the second one. Seen the first a long time ago on tv and seen Bandits too, definitely wasn't bad indeed. Hopefully your computer woes are all fixed.

Glad you got an iPad! In a month, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it. Hope you got the router and are using the iPad now.

  8. Hi, dear Birgit!

In my younger, wilder days I was involved in a love OCTAGON. :) There was much conflagration. :)

I'm sorry your computer/hubby problems continue. Please remember to tell us your password so that we can all help you remember it. :)

I honestly have not seen any of these films, but I like the actors in each one - Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart, Joseph Cotten, Greg Peck, Billy Bob and Bruce Willis. Mrs. Shady and I recently visited family members in another state. They love Bruce Willis and during our stay we were we were treated (subjected) to a Bruce Willis movie marathon. I must admit that I developed a taste for his action adventure films.

Thanks for the reviews, dear friend BB!

  9. The first time I saw Bandits, I laughed so hard. That was such a great movie and never disappointing no matter how many times we watched it. Just thinking about it puts a smile on my face :)

Glad to hear you got an iPad. It can be so frustrating with passwords for routers. We have learned to write them down and keep the paper close by the computer Right now we have it taped to inside our kitchen cupboard right by the computers :)

  10. The Philadelphia Story is such a classic. I wish we had gotten more Cary Grant - Katharine Hepburn pairings, they had such great chemistry both here and in Bringing Up Baby. Of course, the cast she wanted (Gable and Tracy) would have been great, too, but it's hard to imagine anyone else in those roles. I love it so much.

Haven't seen the other two, but one of these days I must see Duel in the Sun - I've heard so much about it and it sounds just delicious!

    1. The Philadelphia Story is a great film and I can't picture this film with the other men either. I love Bringing Up Baby and Holiday but still have to see Scarlett Street. Duel In The Sun is a fun flick and quite wonky especially seeing Peck as a bad boy.

  11. 'BANDITS' sounds like one I'd really enjoy. I pretty much have always dug watching Bruce Willis anyway, beginning with the absolutely brilliant 'Moonlighting'.

I've seen your first two and would definitely have to go with 'The Philadelphia Story' - that's a good one!

Would 'Heaven Can Wait' count as a 3-way? Two related men in love with the same woman. If so, that would be my #1 choice.

  12. You should never let your husband touch anything electronic, he apparently doesn't possess the gift with them!

I never would have expected Philadelphia Story to be the title of the week! It's a terrific film though, the main trio and Ruth Hussey get the lion's share of the attention but Virginia Weidler as sly sister Dinah would have walked off with the picture if the leads hadn't been so strong, she's brilliant.

Duel in the Sun, UGH! I sat in slack jawed wonder that so much time and money had been lavished on something so dumb. The cinematography, Bickford and Lillian Gish are good but the rest is wretched. Peck is miscast and Jones is hopelessly out of her depth. Did anyone ever benefit more from a marriage than she? Lust in the Dust is right.

It's been years since I've seen Bandits and I don't remember a great deal but I do recall enough to know it's a good fit for the week.

So many choices like always and this week it stymied me a bit but I finally managed to come up with three that aren't classics but pleasant films nonetheless.

This Means War (2012)-Two CIA secret agents (Chris Pine & Tom Hardy) best friends and roommates go all out in their competition when they discover they have fallen for the same woman (Reese Witherspoon). The three actors work hard to buoy this with their personality and charisma. One problem: Tom Hardy and Chris Pine’s chemistry with each other is much stronger than either share with Reese. The director's roots in music videos are painfully obvious and he does nothing to smooth out the many kinks in the borderline creepy plot.

Keeping the Faith (2000)-A triangle with a twist. Two men-a priest and a rabbi (Edward Norton & Ben Stiller), friends since childhood, fall for the same woman (Jenna Elfman). She is likewise a friend from their youth newly returned to town. The various conflicts the situation presents make up the bulk of the film.

Some Kind of Wonderful (1987)-Working class high schooler Keith (Eric Stoltz) longs to date the most popular girl in school Amanda Jones (Lea Thompson) and his best friend, the tomboyish Watts (Mary Stuart Masterton), tries to help at first. Once he makes the date though she realizes she’s jealous. Add in that Amanda’s ex-boyfriend, jackass rich boy Hardy (Craig Sheffer), resents being replaced by someone he sees as inferior and plots revenge. All the pieces are now in place for a big showdown. If the plot sounds somewhat familiar it’s because this was written by the prolific king of 80’s teen angst John Hughes. Good performances all around.

    1. Lust in the Dust is quite the wonky film. JJ did benefit from being with Selznick for sure because she is quite the lacklustre actress but that's why I like this movie becuase all seem so out of place. I have not seen the films you picked but I am marking them down because I value your opinion

    2. Thanks for the compliment. I have to warn you that This Means War isn't that good of a film but Chris Pine and Tom Hardy really work well together. I'd love to see them reteam in a better vehicle.

  15. I love Bandits. I've never taken to The Philadelphia Story, which is odd as I like all the actors and I'm a fan of the era. But that movie--meh. Haven't seen the third. I might have to check it out.

There was a movie that popped in my head when I was reading the post, but now I've lost it. I'm sure it'll occur to me later.

  16. I've got to see Duel in the Sun and Bandits. The combination of Cate, Billy Bob, and Bruce in the same film is enough for me to think weird. I like the magic of Kate Hepburn and Gary Grant together in Philadephia Story and the other two, too.

Hope you like your iPad and you can do all that you want to do with it.

  23. Having read the comments, I see that Joel and I watch many of the same films. I was thinking of This Means War as I read your post. He's right in all that he says about that one. It's not a "great" film, but it is very funny (and enjoyable). I love Some Kind of Wonderful. Another John Hughes gem that explores the love triangle is Pretty In Pink. (Seems like I remember reading somewhere that the original story had her with Duckie at the end, but the previewing audience didn't like that outcome and they rewrote it.)

My favorite TV triangle actually happened on General Hospital back in the 90s. Sonny. Brenda. Jax. I loved it because even I couldn't decide who I wanted her to be with... like Brenda I loved them both! This little clip is from an ABC Special about the most unforgettable couples. This was the only "threesome" on the special. The actual BSJ stuff begins at the 1 minute mark.

  26. The concept of the love triangle makes for a great story. The first one that came to my mind was in the musical Cabaret. There's the great scene where the 3 parties are dancing together and the way they are shown looking at each other from one to the next says so much without any words spoken.

Another film is Day of the Locust though that one might be more of a case of one woman leading more than one on and using whomever she can to get ahead. A sad but intense film.
