Thursday Movie Picks-Movies with Long Titles

You won’t see Dr. Strangelove or Eternal Sunshine here because....I have not seen these movies yet...yup, me bad. Wandering through the Shelves came up with this clever theme and I had to think(and look up) to find 3 films I have seen. I have seen many others but I pick the 3 below...

1. THOSE MAGNIFICENT MEN IN THEIR FLYING MACHINES; OR, HOW I FLEW FROM LONDON TO PARIS IN 25 HOURS AND 11 MINUTES-1965

Well, that’s a mouthful but this is one funny movie starring Stuart Whitman as an American who decides to travel to England to join the race. You meet a variety of nut bars from other countries from the great Gert Frobe (Goldfinger from James Bond of the same name) as a Prussian nut to the equally great Terry-Thomas as the evil nemesis. It is very funny, light entertaining film...worth a look for sure and based on an actual race.

2. THE FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS OR PARDON ME BUT YOUR TEETH ARE IN MY NECK-1967

This movie was picked by one of the other film nuts last week and, even though I have not seen this since I was a kid, it fit this challenge. This is a Roman Polanski film in which he co-stars with his future wife, Sharon Tate (who was killed by the Manson family). Polanski plays the assistant to an elderly Van Helsing type character who is out to kill the head vampire in Transylvania. The old guy needs a lot of help since he is quite shaky on his feet. A young bosomy damsel (played by Tate) is kidnapped by the vampire to be offered up as a sacrifice to the annual vampire feast. This, seriously, has some scary moments in it but it is also quite funny especially the head vampire's gay vampire brother. It's quite a fun British film and you know Polanski must love the Roger Corman movies.

3.  THOSE DARING YOUNG MEN IN THE JAUNTY JALOPIES- 1969

This is almost a sequel to the first  film I chose and it even has Terry -Thomas in it as the grandson of the evil dude he played in the first movie. Gert Frobe plays, once again, a German nut who, along with his partner are thieves. The Italians are represented as well as the Americans, this time, by Tony Curtis. They are all in a race across Europe heading to Monte Carlo to win the trophy and you know hi-jinks ensues. It is another funny, frolicsome film that you can't help but enjoy.

Which 3 would you choose?

  1. I've not seen the middle one, but very familiar with the other two.
I'll just go with a classic - Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.

  2. Hi, Birgit!

I have seen film #3 - the Terry Thomas "vehicle" Jalopies.

I was immediately drawn to the announcer's voice on that Mag Men trailer. They don't make 'em like that any more. I never saw Gert Frobe in any film other than Goldfinger and, for that reason alone, I'd like to give Mag Men and JJ a try.

BOND: Do you expect me to talk?
GOLDFINGER: No, Mr. Bond... I expect you to DIE.

I don't know if I could watch Vamp Killers because it brings me down whenever I see young and beautiful actress Sharon Tate and remember the terrible fate that awaited her.

The plot of JJ, a race across Europe to win a trophy, seems inspired by the 1963 Terry Thomas film It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World which also co-starred Jimmy Durante (who sings the JJ theme).

I can recommend one long title film: Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb starring Peter Sellers in multiple (and very memorable) roles.

Thank you very much, dear friend BB!

    1. Dr. Strangelove will be popular( I made a boo boo and this theme is for this coming week.). You are right because I look at Sharon Tate and have this huge sense of sadness. I love Terry Thomas and his character from Jalopies was the inspiration for this cartoon with a gap toothed villain and his dog. I recall seeing that cartoon but can’t recall their names. Mad, mad etc...I used before so I chose another

    2. Dick Dastardly was the character. He appeared in Wacky Races and its spin-off, Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines.

    1. I have to see the second film of Beasts and we have all of the Downton Abbey series and love it. Do you know there is a film coming out in September with all the cast? I hope they don’t kill anyone else off.

  5. I think you have the prelim list, I had 2018 Releases for my movie pick today! But still, I love long titles. I haven't seen any of these though.

  6. I've seen all three of these, the first and third many years ago, and enjoyed them all. One long-titled film I always wanted to see was Can Heironymus Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe and Find True Happiness?

  7. This is a fun theme, Birgit! ☺ I have seen all three. Always loved Terry Thomas, with his mustache and gap-toothed smile! One long movie title that comes to mind is "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb", starring Peter Sellers (1964). Have a good weekend!

    1. Terry Thomas is a favourite of mine. I still have to see Dr. Strangelove

  8. I have not seen any of these, but I've heard of the first one. And of course Sharon Tate.

I do have a long title recommendation for you. I have not seen it, but several students have touted it to me. It's called Don't Be a Menace to South Central while Drinking your Juice in the Hood. It's a parody of the Boyz in the Hood genre.

  9. BIRGIT ~

The only two movies with long-ish titles that I really enjoy, which came to my mind, were...

    1) 'If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium'
That's not an extre-eee-mely long title, but it's longer than average, and I really enjoy this movie. It's just plain "fun".

    2) 'Dr. Strangelove: Or... bibbidi-bobbidi-boo'
It's already been mentioned a few times, but it would definitely be on my list, too. It's a genuine political parody classic that I own on DVD.

I think I may have seen the first movie you mentioned, but it was ages ago (in my youth) and I can't really recall even the first thing about it now.

  10. I guess you can tell I've never seen any of these, but I always visit because I love your irreverent synopses. They always make me laugh, especially when you mention "nut-bars."

  11. Well, I have seen "Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love The Bomb," and if you haven't seen it, find it and watch it. It's hilarious.

Another is Lina Wertmuller's "Swept Away by an Unusual Destiny in the Blue Sea of August," usually just called "Swept Away." It's a good mid-'70's social statement movie.

    1. I taped it and still have to see it which is shame on me. I actually have seen Swept Away which is a good film and commentary on politics

  12. Until I read Tony Curtis, I wasn't sure if I saw the 3rd movie. I definitely saw the first, but the credits are the the only thing that I recall. The movie is impressed on my memory because I saw it on Thanksgiving with the brother and cousins, as well as it was the first movie I saw as a teenager.

The long movie title I think of is The Assassination of Jessie James by the Coward Robert Ford

  18. Saw the first one and think I saw the third one. Not a movie buff though. Always loved Terry Thomas.

  19. Birgit,

I have not heard of any of these films. The first feature looks like something we might find entertaining to watch and maybe the second one, as well. I'm not sure about your third pick, though. This movie theme is a strange one and certainly doesn't instantly make any titles standout, so I asked Google. One article I skimmed across, one title caught my eye, THE ADVENTURES OF BUCKAROO BANZAI ACROSS THE 8TH DIMENSION. We saw this many moons ago. :)

  20. I haven't even heard of any of these, but what amazing titles!

  21. Good job on actually coming up the titles you did. I think I've seen all of these--at least I've heard of them.

Nothing is coming to me at the moment. I have a hard enough time coming up with titles let alone long titles.

  23. Flying Machines looks like fun and typical of the comedy/humor in the 60s.

    YOU have an excellent evening.

  24. The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain (Hugh Grant); The 100 Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared (Swedish film); and Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (Keira Knightley and Steve Carell).
