Wandering Through The Shelves: TV Edition-2018 Freshmen Series

I believe I am back on track! This is the final Thursday in January and the final day for this month! I can't believe it but it is and so time never stops. This is all about the new shows that debuted last year and I am old school so I have nothing from Netflix, Crave, Hulu, Doolu or Spoodoo...Poop-Poop-Pee-Doo. Check out Wandering Through The Shelves and see what everyone else has picked. The 3 I have chosen are all from the regular old 3 networks so here we go...

1. NEW AMSTERDAM

How I wish hospitals were truly like this where someone cares and spends the time to figure out what is wrong with you. To be honest I would love to see a real doctor's show...maybe a dark comedy where you see how horrible the cleaning staff washes down everything, the nurses talk about their trips not bothering to see if the old person down the hall is ok and the doctors could care less if your issue does not show up on bloodwork. This stars Ryan Eggold (who is in BlacKkKlansman) as the new head of the hospital and starts right off firing a bunch of doctors and basically creating a storm of controversy but endearing himself to some doctors who are glad he is finally running things. My hubby and I both enjoy this show because it feels good, it cares and has some good story lines and no zombies or serial killers as heroes.

2. MANIFEST

A bunch of people on a plane run into some bad turbulence  but finally land only to learn that they landed...5 years later! The center are a brother and sister who find out that their mom has since passed away, the sister's fiancee married her best friend and the brother's son remained 10 whereas his twin sister is 5 years older. Of course there is a conspiracy afloat and you are not sure whom to believe. I am really enjoying this series and hope they can carry this throughout the next seasons. Oh yes, and, so far, no zombies

3. THE COOL KIDS

Yes...I like this show with its sad soundtrack and ok chuckles but for some reason, I enjoy watching this. I think it is because they are finally showing people who are not 25 wearing cool clothes and are big time lawyers or neurosurgeons but are older people in an old folks home. Now this home is a nice one that I could never afford but, aside from that, you get to see what the old coots are up to. It stars Vicki Lawrence, Martin Mull(who is the oldest of the bunch), David Alan Grier and my fav, Leslie Jordan, that short guy with the southern accent who played on Will & Grace. I'm not saying it is the best but it is my guilty pleasure and there are no zombies in this....nope, you don't even see an old person laying there drooling in their cup.

Which 3 would you choose?

  1. I'd definitely pick The Rookie with Nathan Fillion. It's a darn good show.

  2. I can't think of any new shows I am watching other than 'Good Eats Reloaded'. A cooking show. I am watching 'Unspeakable' on the CBC about the contamination of blood products with HIV and Canadian inaction. Makes my skin crawl when governments put dollars above people's lives.

  3. Hi, Birgit!

This one is easy for me. Mrs. Shady and I watch New Amsterdam every week and enjoy it. We almost didn't tune in because, at the start of the season, a critic had it on his list of the worst new shows of the season. He was just plain wrong, because we think it is one of the best shows of any season. Ryan made a big splash on The Blacklist and he is wonderful in his role as a doctor with a big heart who actually puts patients first. If you want to see a real hospital, I recommend the satirical film The Hospital (1971) starring George C. Scott.

I have not seen the other two TV series. I avoid shows with senior citizen casts and therefore I doubt I will give Cool Kids a try. I never liked Golden Girls for the same reason, and if I see Betty White in one more such show I'll scream. However I did like actor Leslie Jordan in American Horror Story: Coven because he played a scary character.

I can easily recommend two new series, beginning with the one I just featured on my blog, the Lifetime/Netflix series You. Mrs. S and I are also sold on The Kids Are Alright, a family sitcom set in the 70s that we agree is funnier than The Goldbergs. The series is lauded by critics but suffers from low ratings and might soon be on the chopping block for cancellation.

Enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend BB!

  4. You are with my hubby about Betty White:). I have only seen clips of the Hospital but it’s one I really want t9 see. I have seen the sitcom based in the 1970’s but, once again, I keep missing it, it is funny

    Hope all is well.

  8. I haven't seen any of these but they all sound interesting. My new show passion is currently "The Rookie". Nathan Fillion has surpassed his "Castle" persona.

  10. I haven't seen any of these shows but I can imagine the hospital in New Amsterdam is nothing like real life. If only!

  11. If only real life were like New Amsterdam. Maybe then things would get cured and found out way faster. But nope, lazy a-holes say it is "normal" and that is that.

  13. I do love Manifest. I haven't watched the other two, but I am aware of them. My three would include Manifest and God Friended Me. I don't think there's another that occurs to me right now (and dinner's just about ready, so I'd better get off the computer...).

  15. I like your idea of a real(ity) doctor's show. That might take the form of horror, though. Ignorance is bliss sometimes, I'm thinking.

    Cheers and well wishes, Birgit.

  16. I've been following Manifest faithfully from the beginning. In some ways I've found it kind of frustrating and that main guy (the one with the boy) I find quite likable and am annoyed by his overly dramatic wife and sister. I find myself shouting at the TV for them to shut up when they start getting too annoying for me.

Haven't seen those other shows you've mentioned. I have been a regular viewer of God Friended Me (kind of unique, entertaining, and feel-good). I can't think of any other shows I've been watching this year other than old reruns on METV.

  17. I'll have to check out New Amsterdam. I like authentic medical shows. Since I type medical reports, I catch a lot of "mistakes" that medical shows incorporate in the script, so a "real" one would be a good one to see.

  18. Birgit,

We want to see 'Manifest'. It looks interesting. We thought about streaming it directly from the NBC app but we hate putting up with the commericals. We still may do it while all episodes are still available. Thanks for the review of your favorite new series.

  19. New Amsterdam is the only I've heard of as it just aired here and they advertised it on TV all day long. I missed it but I don't think I'll catch up because I already watch 2 medical dramas and it's enough for me haha

  20. Since tv is my medium of choice, I was surprised I had only seen Manifest of the three you mentioned. It's starting to get a bit weird, but I guess I like weird.

I would also recommend The Rookie. I love Nathan Fillian's serious side. It shows what a great actor he is. He has perfect timing with his remarks, too.

My third favorite is God Friended Me. Somehow I didn't think I would like it because of the title, but it caught me by surprise.

  22. I liked reading your perspective on these series. I haven't seen any of them, but they sound fun, particularly "The Cool Kids." I hope I will get a chance to watch some of it!

  23. Other than the true crime documentary shows I find on YouTube, I don't watch TV, so I'm at a loss with this one.

I'm sure you picked solid choices.

  24. re: New Amsterdam. When you get doctors, nurses and caregivers that truly care, it's huge.
Thinking of you and hope things level out soon.

  25. I've seen a little of New Amsterdam, a little on the boring side for me so I've dropped it.

I haven't seen Manifest, but the plot interests me. Unfortunately it's not showing here, hoping Netflix brings it over eventually.
