Weekly Song Challenge

The final week of April...wild! What’s new from last year? There are vaccines which, I hope, people are getting, slowly but shirley. Aside from that, I bet we love taking advantage of some excitement by going to the grocery store...ooohhhh. Ok, enough of that, it is another week for music over at Jingle, Jangle, Jungle and these are her 3 themes:

Song About An Ex

A Song Beginning With The Letter X

A Song By XTC

1. YOU'RE SO VAIN- CARLY SIMON- 1972

This is a very famous song sung by a vixenish gal named Carly Simon who has been playing it coy for decades about who this song is about. She has said it is not about her husband James Taylor but kept it coy forever. Now, part of the song is about Warren Beatty but she claims only a sentence or 2 where he claimed it is the whole song(kind of proves her point doesn't it). The other men, well, we just don't know and that's OK because we have all been with someone where this song fits like a glove and, I think, it doesn't really matter if it is a man or a woman. I always liked this song...

2. XANADU-SUNG BY OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN WITH ELO-1980

I love ELO and they penned the music to this flick, Xanadu, with the title song being the same word. I actually went to see this Disco inferno, in all the wrong places, back in 1980, not because of Olivia or Disco but it co-starred the great Gene Kelly. The movie is now a cult favourite and I will watch it again but I know it's not a good flick by any means. When I was watching this up on the big screen I wondered what kind of Kool-Aid Gene Kelly was drinking when he signed on to be in this film. This movie uses the same character name as he was called in Covergirl, a far superior film.  Anyways, the song is catchy in that Disco sucks kind of way:)

3. MAKING PLANS FOR NIGEL BY XTC-1979

When I saw the band's name, I thought Who?? I had to look this one up to just figure out if I even knew their songs but when I saw the title of this song, I knew I had heard it. It is an odd ditty that I really like listening to. I am certain some of you can tell me more about this band and I will look forward to listening to what everyone else chooses.

Have a fab day!!

  1. Hi, Birgit!

How are you, dear friend? This is by far the toughest song challenge to date, x-traordinarily so. You did a great job with your selections. I imagine many other participants also picked "Xanadu" as their "X" song because choices are so limited. Like you I wonder what veteran hoofer Gene Kelly was thinking when he signed on to appear in that discofied movie musical. To me, Xanadu, Roller Boogie and other genre films are cringeworthy, hard to watch, and the music hard to digest. Disco really did suck... at least most of it.

Here are my picks in the Song Challenge:

SONG ABOUT AN EX: "Use Ta Be My Girl" by The O'Jays. This 1978 single spent 5 weeks at #1 on the R&B chart and went top 5 pop.

SONG BEGINNING WITH X: "X-Temperaneous Boogie" by singer/pianist Camille Howard & Her Trio, a single that made a run at the top 5 on the R&B chart in the spring of 1948.

SONG BY XTC: "Life Begins At The Hop," a song that references the 1950s rock & roll classic "At The Hop" by Danny And The Juniors. The XTC single approached the UK top 50 in the spring of 1979.

If you're interested, dear friend, today is the final day of my current post at Shady's Place. I hope you can find time to stop in and check it out. Have a good one and I'll see you tamale "At The Movies!"

  2. Wow. I would have been lost. Never even heard of XTC. I did Google Carly and apparently she did an interview and said it was Beatty. I had always heard it was Mick Jagger, but wrong again.

  3. Birgit,

The only song title to instantly come to mind for the letter X is Xanadu so I'd probably have to dig up something else because I know that would get picked. I'm not sure about the other two prompts, though. I would've only been 13 when I had an ex and I'm totally unfamiliar with XTC's songs. I enjoyed your picks, though. :)

  4. I would have said Xanadu by Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Titch, but unfortunately I just looked it up and it’s actually called The Legend of Xanadu. I don’t know any other songs by XTC so it would have to be Nigel too. And nobody does songs about exes better than Roy Orbison. Start with It’s Over and work from there!
