The First Post...Letter A

I am going simple this year and  this means..hopefully quick posts. I am talking Movies this year and, for the most part, they will be newer films which is rare for me😃. I actually asked my hubby and my friends for their favourite films So let’s get on with it.

APOLLO 13-1995

True story about 3 spacemen who are doing aok until...oopsy! “Houston, we have a problem.”

Stars Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon and the Late Bill Paxton as the 3 astronauts who are not having a good time and Ed Harris, Gary Sinese and Kathleen Quinlan round out the cast. Harris and Quinlan were nominated for Oscars and it won for Best Sound and editing. It was up for Best Picture but didn’t win(Braveheart won).

Tense, well-acted, intelligent film with many events that took place shown in the film. Ron Howard directed the film with his mom, dad and brother, Clint, all in the film. Well worth seeing

  1. Good choice. My ex worked on the design of the Saturn V propulsion system, so I learned a lot about space missions.

  2. Hi, Birgit!

The starter's pistol has fired "and they're off!" I called my bookie and bet the family nest egg on you to finish the A To Z race and win by a nose. :)

Apollo 13 is one of my favorite films. Mrs. Shady loves it, too. Hanks is her favorite actor and I have always admired actress Kathleen Quinlan. Ron Howard kept it real. He did a great job of building tension throughout the film without relying on suspenseful music and other such devices.

Have a great A To Z run, dear friend Birgit!

  4. One of my favourite movies. It always surprised me that although I lived through the event and know how it turned out, every time I see it I am sitting on the edge of my seat with tension. Good start Birgit.

  6. I actually saw this one right after it came out. The gentleman I went with and I kept saying we couldn't believe it was a true story, but of course we knew it was. It was also a great way for me to appreciate my true profession: human factors. Placing a round square hole in a round peg was such an accomplishment. OK, a bit of license there, but you know what I mean, cause you saw the flick, too. Great first start and so glad it was one I had actually seen!

  12. I think I'm going to like this theme. I usually prefer movies "based on a true story" so I am a fan of this film. It's been a while since I've seen this, but since I have a copy on DVD I'll be watching it again eventually.

  15. I love this movie. Saw it in the theater. (Have you seen that meme about Tom Hanks? It asks why anyone would go on a trip with him and shows all the bad things that happen. Apollo 13. Sully. Cast Away. You get the picture.)

  16. Birgit,

"Apollo 11" is an edge-of-your-seat thriller. Tom Hanks does an pAwesome job in it. Welcome to another year of A2Zing!

  17. I am so useless at watching films, because I hate the cinema - all those other people in close proximity! But now there is Netflix... so I am getting to see more. I shall take note of this list to find them!

  18. I didn't see this one, either. I'd rather watch some of the documentaries about the fake Moon landings than watch a fake Hollywood movie about a fake trip to the Moon.

  19. This was an on-the-edge movie for me, even though I was pretty sure it would have a happy ending. I thought it was well paced, excellent actors & enjoyed it very much, even though it is not really 'my type' of movie. I'm more the old fashioned love story ones! TFS

  20. I watched this years ago and I remember it being boring. I did like the acting though.

  21. Well, here I am, catching up on four days' worth of A to Z posts, from seven or eight different bloggers!

Anyway, I have yet to see this film, believe it or not. And I'm old enough to clearly remember when it happened for real. I didn't know Ron Howard's mom acted as well, although I'm very familiar with Rance and Clint Howard's work. (I really enjoyed Rance Howard's small role in Ed Wood.
