Thursday Movie Picks-Famous Person with a Non-Famous Person Romance

I found this one a bit tough because my brain kept going to that flick, "Nodding Off", oops I meant "Notting Hill". Ok, It's not that bad, it has its charm except when she talks about a girl meeting a boy blah blah... I finally came up with 3, that I don't believe I used before, for this theme, that was selected by Wandering Through the Shelves. Here are my 3...

1. ARSENIC AND OLD LACE-1944

I love this movie where a famous writer, claiming that marriage is for ninkompoops (or is that nimkampoops?) is marrying the girl next door. He avoids the press wanting a big scoop as they venture back home to pack and spend their honeymoon at Niagara Falls (Hey, I know they can get a great deal at the Rendezvous motel, an actual motel!). Poor Mortimer Brewster, played by Cary Grant, finds out his dear sweet aunts kill old men and have their nutty loon of a brother, who thinks he is Teddy Roosevelt, dig another grave for a yellow fever victim. Crazier still, Mortimer's brother, the nasty Raymond Massey, decides to pay a visit with his sidekick (Peter Lorre) since he is trying to hide from the police. Mortimer forgets all about his wife since he must deal with all these bodies. A very funny, black comedy that makes me laugh every time I watch it. The 2 old aunts just about steal the picture. I love that Raymond Massey's character is compared to Boris Karloff who played Massey's part on Broadway.

2. PLAY MISTY FOR ME-1971

Client Eastwood made his directorial debut with this classic nutjob after famous person  movie. Clint plays a disc jockey with a loyal group of followers, one being the fruitcake Jessica Walter(who passed away last March) who calls and asks for him to play the song "Misty". They end up meeting and like all good men, he takes her to bed and they get all misty. He thinks, that is that and see ya around baby, but he has no clue what is in store. He messed with the wrong gal especially when she buys him white shoes. You know she's gotta be nutso ipso facto when she buys someone white shoes, like WTF? This is quite an intense thriller about "love" and the sad thing is that this happens for real. How many famous people have been stalked, hurt or even killed because of a person with major delusions. If you want to know more, just read about Rebecca Schaeffer who died from her injuries at 22 years old or Theresa Saldana who survived her attack.

3. AMERICA'S SWEETHEARTS-2001

Let me start off with saying, this is a dumb movie. Ok, we got that out of the way, plus it stars John Cusack who can be annoying for some reason but so can any of the stars in this movie and there are a lot-Julia Roberts, Catherine Zeta Jones, Christopher Walken, Billy Crystal, Stanley Tucci (whom I love). John and Catherine are famous, married movie stars who have made many successful films together but now they are heading for divorce. Billy Crystal wants them back together, just for now, to make sure her latest film, from director Christopher, will be a hit. They decide to go along with the charade even though Catherine's boytoy, played by Hank Azaria, is not happy about it. In the mix is Julia who plays Catherine's sister and her gal Friday. Of course, it has been found that John likes Julia and vice versa but issues come into play. I can watch this more than "Nodding Off" for some reason (it must be that speech that Julia says about a girl meeting a boy...zzzz) even though this is more of a mess despite the cast. If it's on TV and you want to just sit back and not think, this is a good movie to watch. I like Christopher Walken in this movie.

Which 3 films can you think of?

Happy Birthday Mom!

  1. Hi, Birgit!

I'm thinking about your dear mother today as you observe the anniversary of her birth. Bless you, dear friend! It was sweet of you to include that video at the end with the singing of the birthday song. You might have gone with the clip of MM jumping out of a cake and crooning "Happy birthday, Mr. President" to JFK. Yes? No? :)

I watched Arsenic many years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Several players are favorites including Cary Grant, Peter Lorre (the guy who strangles women with their own hair), and Priscilla Lane, youngest of the singing/acting Lane Sisters. I saw all of their movies.

I saw Play Misty For Me in 1971 upon its release. I have always been a fan of stalkerish characters, and Jessica Walter (who made a comeback on TV in Arrested Development) did a fine job fleshing out the role. Buying white shoes for a man after a steamy one night stand is better than boiling his daughter's bunny rabbit in a kettle on the stove, the malicious M.O. used by Glenn Close-Encounters of the Unkind. Yessum, I am still bitter about the stalking and killing of budding starlet Rebecca Schaeffer all those years ago. I remember the incident well.

I haven't seen America's Sweethearts, and I don't intend to add it to my list. Based on the trailer, it looks too much like a typical formula Hollywood comedy date movie. Besides, I don't like Julia Roberts very much, ever since she was a guest on Howard Stern's show and acted like a smug b-tch. However her brother Eric is one of my favorites. Like you, I dig Stanley Tucci. Mrs. Shady and I are currently watching his performances as a doctor in the cast of ER during the 2007-2008 season. Christopher Walken is always a hoot, but I think Billy Crystal is overexposed.

I would once again name the Marilyn Monroe musical comedy Let's Make Love as an example of this theme. Yves Montand plays a world famous business tycoon who owns half the world and has more $$$ than God. MM plays a struggling singer in an off-off-off-off-off Broadway musical comedy revue. In the production, MM sings the Cole Porter song "My Heart (and my you-know-what) Belongs to Daddy" (a real stretch for her). To make a long story short, Montand's character is dazzled by the unknown blonde beauty and pursues her. She plays hard to get (a real stretch for her). You can guess the rest.

Thank you for the morning entertainment, dear friend BB. I read your reply to my comment on yesterday's post and very much appreciate it. Keep warm, drink toddies, watch movies and have a wonderful weekend!

    1. I think my mom would pass on MM crooning to her. I am glad you like Arsenic with Grant and the wonderful Pricilla Lane.
I think a bunny is a boiling pot is worse than a man getting white shoes but it is a recipe--Haeffenpfeffer..remember Bugs?
No biggie to skip Sweethearts which is typical romance formula. I had to go to youtube and watch Julia on the Howard Stern show. You know, I got a totally different impression of her. I dislike Howard Stern and would have told him off when he got very personal about when Roberts lost her virginity. That was so rude but, then again, that is Stern's schtick and i just never would have appeared on his show. To me, Julia just looked very uncomfortable and then, after being repeatedly interrupted, she was losing her patience. I think if I was there, you would have thought I was a stuck up bitch.
Have you seen Stanley Tucci's wine and food experience on CNN? It's a great show where he travels around Italy experiencing the local foods and wine. Lucky guy.
Let's Make Love is a good movie which I haven't seen in years. I know she and Montand had an affair during that time. His wife, Simone Signoret was nonplussed about it because she knew he would come back to her.
      Wishing you a lovely weekend!

  2. Stanley Tucci rocks.
You did good coming up with three. All I can think of is a movie that's definitely not a romance although the two stars have a romance - The Fifth Element with famous Bruce Willis and newcomer Milla Jovovich.

    1. He does rock. I like your take on the theme...I am not a fan of the movie but it is excellent about someone famous with a newcomer.

  3. Hi Birgit - yes Stanley Tucci does rock, as Alex says, and who you admire. Great ideas for us ... I pass - but love having the selections - cheers Hilary

  4. Hi Birgit!

I'll join in the chorus of praise for Stanley Tucci! LOVE him! Such an interesting actor and whenever I've seen him interviewed he comes across as an intelligent and funny man.

To your picks. Arsenic and Old Lace is an old reliable but I think this is the best iteration. Cary is wonderfully exasperated, the aunts do practically walk off with the film and Massey and Lorre make a great team. And of course my beloved Priscilla Lane as the flummoxed bride to be. I've seen a stage version as well as TV versions with Helen Hayes and Lillian Gish as the sisters (Bob Crane was in Cary's part) and another with Mildred Natwick and Dorothy Stickney (with Tony Randall) and the material is durable but none have the snap of this.

Play Misty for Me is both wonderfully entertaining and deeply disturbing. Jessica Walter :-( tears it up and completely steals the film.

Ugh America's Sweethearts! What a rank piece of manipulative trash. I liked John Cusack so much when he was young but he's gotten ever more oily and insufferable with the years.

I too thought of Notting Hill but I wasn't much of a fan. Rhys Ifans was by far the best part of it though.

My other thought was all the various versions of A Star is Born though Esther/Vicki doesn't say unknown for long so it might not qualify. The Judy version is the ultimate, followed by Janet Gaynor's, than the Gaga one and sadly the dreadful Babs version is dead last.

    1. I was very close in picking the Star Is Born film versions and, I agree, the Judy Garland version is the best.
I also agree with you that Rhys stole the film. He was the one that made me laugh in the film.
Jessica Walter's death was a surprise for me and still saddens me.
I have not seen the other versions even though I heard about them. I am trying to get my head wrapped around Bob Crane in the Grant part. I love Priscilla Lane because she always seemed to add more to the film she was in.
I laighed when you spoke about John Cusack because he does look oily or maybe its the Grecian formula #5 he has in his hair. He is someone I wish I could trip while he walks by me...I won't do that but I can dream.
Have you been watching the Stabley Tucci Travel show where he explores food and wine in Italy? I wish I could do that job:)

  5. This is another category that eludes me. I've only seen Play Misty in your picks, but it's been a while. I'd have to think more than I've thought already to come up with something and I'm not sure that I would think of one. But I'm sure I've seen something that would qualify--it's just to coming to me.

  6. Hi Birgit, I have seen and enjoyed all of your selections here. We recently re-watched Play Misty For Me. Roberta Flack's song (The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face) playing during the love scene is my favourite moment. ♥ Hugh Grant has a few of these movies. ☺ Two that came to mind first are Love, Actually and Music & Lyrics

    1. P.S. Yes, Stanley Tucci absolutely rocks! 👌

    2. Stanley does rock! He needs to star in a mature love story, not a sappy one like the Hugh Grant ones. He could star with Isabella Rossellini. I do like that Roberta Flack song too. Hugh did make a few of these films and you picked 2 popular ones that are popular this week.

    3. I can picture Stanley Tucci with Isabella Rossellini! Great idea for a love story, Birgit. ☺

  7. Woowee, that scene from Play Misty For Me is a doozy, Birgit. Yikes. I remember learning about Rebecca Shaeffer's shooting - unbelievably sad.

On a different note, I love your contribution to the hate fest. I'm wondering if you'll please return to shave down some words (needs to be 25 or less)? Please. XX

  8. I had forgotten the setup of Arsenic and Old Lace. I mean, I remember the murders... Funny film.

I haven't seen Play Misty for Me, but I have heard of it. I'll get around to seeing it eventually.

I liked America's Sweethearts. Of course, I haven't seen it since it came out, but I enjoyed it the one time I saw it. I recall Julia Roberts knitting over the in corner through it, which appealed to me.

Rebecca Shaeffer was pretty close to my age when she died. Which just tells you how much of her life was stolen from her. Very sad.

    1. I want to re-watch Play Misty and to soon. I am not a big fan of America's Sweethearts but have watched it on TV. Rebecca was close to my age too since I was in my 20's and it brought to light how dangerous it can be for a famous entertainer.

  9. I always thought there was a touch of the Max Brothers in "America's Sweethearts." And there were some very funny lines, like Julia Roberts, about whom the big thing was how much weight she had lost, being at the all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet, eating some incredible amount of food, and Billy Crystal comes up and says "So this is where they moved the buffet." And the editing job Christopher Walken did on the film: pure genius.

  11. I have no idea but I have seen your first two picks. I was just looking at Stanley Tucci's cookbook yesterday at Costco, but for $22 I'll pass. Waiting for his series to start up again on CNN.

  13. I've never seen Play Misty for Me, and from what you wrote, it seems so unlike Clint Eastwood as there can be. I guess he has a wide range of films. He is talented. Hope the week is going well. Hugs-Erika

  14. I have heard of Misty, but not the other two. I guess I don't quite get the category, either. It may be why I'm in a fog today and most of this week, too. You are certainly doing a lot better than I am this week.

    1. I understand being in a fog. I would just look at Hugh Grant movies-PM of England falls in love with his aide. Famous songwriter falls for someone who can write music. Hugh is a famous Rockefeller type jerk who falls for his aide (Sandra Bullock).

  15. Happy belated to your mom!

I can't think of anything for this one. The only one of yours I've seen is Arsenic which I find difficult to watch. Sometimes films are TOO zany.

  16. Birgit,

I came over last week and left a comment but it's not showing up. Hmmm, I'm confused. You may want to check your spam folder. Of your three movies the only one I've seen is "American Sweethearts". I think we watched it last Valentine's Day. I'm thinking we thought it was an okay film. Over the weekend, we watched "The Proposal" again. That was a lot of fun. It's such a hilarious film. Betty White just cracked me up with her lines that she delivered perfectly. Happy Valentine's Day, my sweet friend!

Glad you had a good Valentine's Day.
