Thursday Movie Picks: Women Revenge Films

Revenge! There are actually quite a few movies about this theme, hell, Charles Bronson created a whole series of movies about this.  I decided on comedies because there is just too much sniping out there. I will find it interesting what Wandering Through The Shelves will choose on her theme blog...here are my 3...

1. 9 TO 5- 1980

I have to re-watch this movie because it is very funny. I remember thinking Jane Fonda would be the hard ass gal, but she played the exact opposite. She, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton all play employees to this lousy bastard of a boss who thinks women should bring him coffee and let him touch their ass plus more, you know, Trump. ( sorry, couldn't help myself). They finally have enough and decide to teach him a lesson with hilarious results. I love the daydreams/dreams they have and how Dolly hog-tied him... she was very funny. It's so worth watching.

2. THE FIRST WIVES CLUB-1996

This film also has 3 women who were college friends with another woman but all went their separate ways. When the one commits suicide, the 3 reunite and realize they all are dealing with jerks for husbands. They decide to start this club and wish to create some "pain" on their ex's. I love what they say about the new young wife of one of the ex's because it's played by Sarah Jessica Parker. I know, I'm mean. Oh and Goldie Hawn plays an aging movie star who gets botoxed with huge fish lips....sort of  what she looks like now.

3. THE OTHER WOMAN- 2014

One day, I wasn't feeling well and came across this flick. I saw it starred Cameron Diaz which meant it might stink, but I was pleasantly surprised and laughed out loud. Leslie Munn is very funny in this and Kate Upton is surprisingly not bad. Diaz plays a lawyer happily involved with a good looking man who seems too good to be true and is. When Munn visits Diaz, Diaz is horrified to learn he is married to Munn who plays this goofy wife who did all she could for her husband. She pleads with Diaz to get back at her ex and they finally decide to work together and travel to the Bahamas(I think) to see what he is up to. They find out he has a 3rd gal in Kate Upton and bring her into the fold. I watched this when my best friend was divorcing her narcissistic husband and saw so many similarities because I know her ex has money stashed away on that same island. This movie is about friendships just like the other 2 and some scenes just made me laugh out loud. I loved the scene when his wife decides to give him a very upset stomach or was that the stiff nipples? Kudos to the very good looking actor(Nikolaj Koster-Waldau) to play this character.

What 3 movies can you come up with?

  1. Hi, Birgit!

I need to hurry thru my comment this morning because we already had a brief outage from Nicole, a hurricane that moved ashore early this morning and is heading toward my neighborhood, with the worst of its winds and rain expected here around 9 am. The wind is already howling and gusting outside my window as I write this. There's a good chance I will lose power again and this time for a longer stretch. Therefore, please understand if you visit my blog today, leave a comment and get no reply. It means that I have no internet service.

The stories in these three films are all presented from a woman's/women's P.O.V. and primarily intended for a female audience. I have watched films #1 and 2, but not #3. 9 To 5 is my favorite of the three, a delightful job of casting that brings together Dolly, Jane and Lily plus the great comedic actor Dabney Coleman, who was an ideal choice for the role of the Trumpian boss. Dabney will soon be age 91. Jane will soon be 85. Lily is 83, and Dolly will soon be 77. Time marches on! Elizabeth Wilson, who did a great job in the role of Ben's (Dustin Hoffman's) mom in Mike Nichols' The Graduate, reached age 94 before she passed away in 2015.

First Wives Club boasts another great female cast with Diane, Goldie and Bette plus, as a bonus, Maggie Smith, already a highly-regarded veteran actress who went on to become famous in the 21st century in the role of Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham, in the hit TV series Downton Abbey.

I have not watched many Cameron Diaz movies, I'm not sure why, but I would have to say that The Other Woman goes on my "maybe" list.

The only female revenge flick I can think of at this hour is Carrie (1976) starring Sissy Spacek, along with the Carrie sequels produced in more recent years.

Thanks for the morning entertainment and education, dear friend BB. I hope to be able to stay online today, but again, mother nature might have other ideas. Enjoy the rest of your week and I'll see you when I see you!

    1. I have been thinking about you and hope you and your wife are ok after this latest hurricane. I have had my friend from Vancouver over so just very busy that way.
I am glad you enjoyed my choices and hope you give this Diaz version a try because the one that steals the show is Leslie Mann as the cheated wife.

  2. Saw your first two choices. Might have to check out The Other Woman. The first movie that popped into my mind when I saw the subject was Fatal Attraction, but that is likely cause it was the answer in a crossword I did yesterday.

    1. Fatal Attraction is a great choice! It created quite the stir back in the day with many men thinking twice than to take that chance.

  3. Nice picks!

Love 9 to 5 and the fact that it was the beginning of a lifelong friendship for its three leads, all awesome women. Dabney Coleman is at his smarmy best and the scene where the clueless Jane says she does "M&M's" never fails to crack me up.

1st Wives isn't quite as big a favorite but the three stars have a great time with their roles and it is a satisfying wish fulfillment fantasy.

I felt the same way when I sat down to watch The Other Woman, Cameron Diaz has made a lot of crap movies, but it turned out to be painless and pleasant enough. I don't have any desire to watch it again but it was okay that once.

I know there is one great old woman's revenge movie that is just tantalizingly beyond my grasp today but I did think of these three.

In reverse order the first would be 1998's Cousin Bette with Jessica Lange as the woman betrayed who sets out to ruin her relatives when one of them steals her man.

1974's Foxy Brown's (Pam Grier) undercover cop boyfriend is killed by gangsters and Foxy goes on the warpath teaming with vigilantes to exact her revenge on the villains who killed her man!

In 1939's Within the Law innocent Ruth Hussey is framed for a crime she didn't commit and spends her prison sentence learning how to work "within the law" to run cons that will punish the people she holds responsible. Tidy B is a remake of a 1930 Joan Crawford movie named "Paid".

    1. I'm glad you like my 3 picks and how right you are about the 3 leads from 9 to 5. I can re-watch the Other Woman quite easily...It's one of those flicks I can always watch. I have not seen any of your picks. I am interested in Cousin Bette and would love to see the Ruth Hussey film. Didn't Joan Crawford make a film called "A Woman's Face" and was that about revenge? Is that the one you were thinking about?

  4. I haven't seen The Other Woman, but I love your first 2 picks--especially 9 to 5. Dolly is a delight in that movie. It's great when the women take over and make their corporate world so much better. My choice first and foremost is Promising Young Woman. I love that movie. It's very dark, and I tend to like dark, quirky movies. I'm also a Carey Mulligan fan. I also like The Brave One, starring Jodie Foster. She's out walking with her boyfriend when he's brutally murdered. Her character takes a methodical approach to seeking revenge. Then there's Hard Candy, starring Elliot Page back when he was Ellen. She's a 14 year old who traps and tortures a man she suspects of being a sexual predator. Great topic!

    Love,
    Janie

  11. I remember all three and enjoyed them! Nice idea to stick with comedies. Loved your funny quip about Goldie's lips. Talk about life imitating art! ☺ The only female revenge movies that come to mind are bloody ones - Carrie and Kill Bill (I and II)

  13. My sincere apologies for the very late visit. My internet has been offline for well over a day. Between blogger not allowing me to leave comments and the internet, I am really stressed out.

I have seen the first one and I fell in love with it. I loved Dolly Parton in that film. Your synopses are always fun to read and the comment on Goldie Hawn was a hoot.

  14. I remember seeing 9 to 5 in a theatre with my friend Wendy. I love the theme song too and still. First Wives Club is another winner. I never heard of the third. I agree - Cameron Dias - ugh. But I'm glad it's a good movie in spite of that boring blonde dim wit.
    Love ya.
