Did anyone watch the Oscars this past Sunday? Obviously, I did and found it very entertaining. I enjoyed Jimmy Kimmel, I enjoyed the Ken song where you could see that Ryan Gosling enjoyed himself and some of the speeches were great ( not the people who, deservedly, won Godzilla, that speech was horrid because he couldn’t read the acceptance speech). The fashions were, well, many just seem stupid and the after party get ups were created by hookers are us. Some were gross and so, so classless.
Anyway, this time I am choosing the year 1966 and went with best score and this was when one still had Best Original Score and Best musical score Adaptation but I’m just doing Score this time around. I am choosing the one I think should have won, the one that did win and one that was nominated. Let me know what you think or if you would have chosen something completely different.
1. THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY BY ENNIO MORRICONE
Believe it or not, this was not even nominated and I choose this score as the score that should have won. Ennio Morricone was in his best form here with almost every piece of music iconic. I love this theme but my favourite is the gold theme when Eli Wallach is running through the cemetery trying to find the plot where the gold is buried. This is, to me, the one that should have won.
2. BORN FREE BY JOHN BARRY
I do love this music and it resonates with me because of the meaning of the song and, I am glad it won but Ennio should have taken it. That being said, I am glad it won.
3. HAWAII BY ELMER BERNSTEIN
This was a sweeping epic that stars Julie Andrews, Richard Harris and Max Von Sydow but, I find it a slog of a film to be honest. I haven’t watched it in years so maybe I should give it another go but…maybe later. I don’t mind the soundtrack which was composed by Elmer Bernstein.
So, do you agree with me or would you choose another soundtrack or do you agree with the Oscar pick?
Can't go wrong with a score from a Clint Eastwood film. I can understand why Born Free won though.
ReplyDeleteThe Oscars became too much political nonsense so I don't watch anymore. Pleased to hear Oppenheimer won a lot of awards and that Godzilla Minus One got best special effects.
There was one guy that made a political speech but, overall, it was a good Oscars. I love Born Free which won but The Good should have been there

DeleteReferencing back to your earworm post those first two most definitely are just that. Born Free even more than Good, Bad and Ugly which might explain its win. Once the Academy members heard it they just couldn't get it out of their heads! It's a decent song though I think the first is more iconic now.
ReplyDeleteAs far as Hawaii goes I agree it was a challenge to sit through. It had some good things in it but a tighter edit would have made it a better film. If I ever endeavor to re-watch it I'm determined to spot The Divine Miss M in her screen bow as a extra!

DeleteOh yes, those first 2 are earworms for sure. Do you know what? My brother watched a show with Marvin Hamlisch on and he played the first bars of Born Free and then he played it backwards and it is the beginning of Star Wars! Holy smokes! I have to watch that. Would the Good be your choice for that year or would you agree with the Academy or would you have gone with something different?

DeleteEnnio Morricone was a newer composer then, right? We know him now, but then he wouldn't have been appreciated by the old-skewing Academy. They've always been fuddy-duddies.

I've never seen Hawaii (the movie nor the state) and doubt I ever will.
[My all-time favorite movie musical score came 5 years earlier with Henry Mancini's 'Breakfast At Tiffany's'. That's one of my 10 most frequently played compact discs.]

For the first time in a long time, I watched the Oscars, but not live. I record everything so I can fast forward through the commercials. It's also great to fast forward through the boring bits. ☺ Jimmy Kimmel was a good host and not too controversial. Loved Ryan Gosling and all the Kens! And the song itself wasn't bad either. I actually liked it better than the Billy Eilish song which won.

Have you see the movie? Meh...I hated the ending as no woman likes to go to that. I found it annoying. How did you like the gowns? I lo Ed Michelle Yeoh in the 2 tone silver. She getting backlash and I don't get why. Ariana Grande looked like she brought her down comforter with her.
Too bad about Morricone, but I'm sure he was laughing all the way to the bank! Yeah, the Godzilla speech was pretty bad. I haven't seen the Barbie movie and don't really care to - it looks pretty stupid to me. The one bright spot is that our own Simu Liu plays one of the Kens. I will probably watch it at some point, just out of curiosity. Yes, I loved Michelle Yeoh's elegant outfit. Can't imagine why she would get any backlash for it! Ariana Grande look like a giant pink marshmallow. Hahaha! Zendaya's dress was stunning and I thought Billy Eilish looked terrible. Vogue Best Dressed Stars

ReplyDeleteAs far as the Oscars or the Academy Awards or People's Choice or Grammy's or whatever, why must we have so, so many award shows to highlight the same cluster of folks? Wait, is it because of that cutie patootie talent extraordinaire, Ryan Gosling? I'd be much happier with a Ryan Gosling show every other week instead of all the awards shows. He's NOT just Ken.

Morricone is definitely a composer better appreciated in retrospect than in the moment. He won two Oscars but should have won at least two more: this one and my goodness, 1991 for Cinema Paradiso. He was nominated in '91, but for Bugsy. That one didn't win either.
