Latin One More Time

Harley can pout like most people can and here he is trying to win an Oscar. I thought Harley needed another blog look because he has not been here for a bit. He has nothing to do with Latin music but I don't care. I'm joining in the free style, this week, Monday Music Moves Me.

1. BARCELONA NIGHTS BY OTTMAR LIEBERT-1990

This is from his CD, "Nouveau Flamenco" which I bought as soon as I heard this song. This guy is a German who loves the Spanish sound and is now a monk. Strange but gifted.

2. GRAVITY BY JESSE COOK-1996

This man is an award winning Canadian who is an expert with the guitar like Ottmar and others but he is just superlative.

3. LA COPA DE LA VIDA SUNG BY RICKY MARTIN-1998

Ricky Martin wowed the Grammy awards when he sang there and he wowed me to. Strange, as this was one of the very few times I watched this show. He was from the boy group, Menudo, and i knew him when he was on my soap, "General Hospital". This song became the official Fifa World Cup song when it was held in France.

What other Latin or Flamenco type songs can you think of?

  1. Hi Birgit!

My timing couldn't have been better, dear friend, seeing as how I returned to the blog scene just in time to see an updated pic of my good buddy Harley. At first glance, I thought it was a candid of Ernest Borgnine.

I see that you are participating in the 4M (Monday's Music Moves Me) blog hop. Our friend Cathy posts her entry on Sunday and you post yours on Wednesday. Any day but Monday, right? :)

Your timing is also great because Latin tune #1, "Barcelona Nights," coincides with an exciting Netflix series that Mrs. Shady and I are watching. In fact, we just watched another episode last night. The show... Who Is Erin Carter?... is a British thriller about Erin Carter, a British school teacher living and working in Barcelona, Spain. The series stars a terrific Swedish actress by the name of Evin Ahmad. Erin Carter is action-packed and fun to watch and Mrs. S and I highly recommend it. While I'm on the subject, I would also like to recommend Whit Stillman's romantic comedy-drama film Barcelona. Set in Barcelona, Spain, the 1994 movie is part of the director's notable "Doomed Bourgeois in Love" trilogy along with two of my all-time favorites Metropolitan (1990) and The Last Days of Disco (1998), the latter starring the wonderful Chloë Sevigny who recently had a prominent role in another series I have been telling you about Feud: (Truman) Capote vs. The Swans.

This is my first day breaking in a brand new set of headphones and I am loving "Gravity." The lively tune dances in my head, bringing pure joy as I try to wake up with my morning coffee.

Coincidentally, I recently saw Ricky Martin on The View, the show airing in the waiting room of the medical center where Mrs. Shady went to have a routine procedure performed. Ricky and the panel talked about his 1999 hit song "Livin' la Vida Loca" as he marked the 25th anniversary of its release. On the show, they also discussed Ricky's role in the main cast of the period comedy drama miniseries Palm Royale and aired the following scene featuring Ricky and comedy legend Carol Burnett:

I remember Ricky making a splash as a member of the Puerto Rican boy band Menudo. By the way, did Luke, Laura, Scorpio, Holly, Blackie and Frisco ever find the elusive Ice Princess?

Thanks for the musical treats, dear friend Birgit. Have a wonderful day, give my buddy Harley hugs and smooches and I'll be back to see you again tomorrow, sitting in the balcony-- "At The Movies!"

  4. I like that kind of music but I don't seek it out, either. Ricky Martin's selection reminded me a lot of Living the Vida Loca.

  5. I was kind of an Ottmar Liebert fan, then just kind of lost interest.

Acoustic Alchemy does this type of music sometimes. Listen to "Lazeez" from "Against the Grain" or the first half of "Red Dust And Spanish Lace" from the album of the same name. Paco de Lucia is a tremendous flamenco player; Laurindo Almeida is another player, though he's more a classical/jazz type.

  6. I love Latin music. I have a Gato Barbieri CD that is super. Sergio Mendez, Astrude Gilberto, Santana, Carlos Jobim. My kind of sounds.

  7. Believe it or not, I've heard of Ottmar. We were gifted one of his CDs for Christmas many years ago which I love. I loved the introduction to Jesse Cook. He's very good. I'm going to check out more of his music on YT. Ricky Martin is marvelous. I love his latin pop vibe. I apologize for being so late to make it over. Harley is cute as always. Have a boogietastic week, Birgit! xo
