Thursday Movie Picks-TV Edition-Non English TV Shows

I don't know any...I really don't except I recall watching Bonanza in German...that was fun. Does that count?? I also saw Friends in Italian...No?? Oh well...Let's see what everyone else has chosen over at Wandering Through The Shelves.

There is no reason...I just love Benny Hill and if I could find that clip of Benny Hill playing all the parts of the Ponderosa gang and speaking in German, I would have put this in:)

  1. Hi, Birgit!

This category has me scratching my head, too, but I enjoyed the clip of Benny Hill. I watched his TV series for years. It surprises me how many millennials never heard of the English funnyman and his wacky show. Can you believe he's dead and gone more than 25 years now? Mrs. Shady and I enjoy many different British comedies. English humor cleanses the palate.

Have a great day and a fine weekend, dear friend BB!

  2. How about this? I was watching 'Grantchester' Sunday night and had a horrible time trying to understand one of the characters. Some of the English accents are like a foreign language to me.

  3. One of my brothers watched Benny Hill. I was too young for it at the time.

  5. LOL I did this a couple of years ago when the theme was films from Southeast Asia. I had nothing.

I didn't really have anything this week either, I used dubs.

  8. I likewise I'm taking a pass this week. I've seen plenty of foreign films but outside an occasional telenova episode zip as far as foreign language series.

The Benny Hill clip is fun.

  11. I once saw a great routine on Saturday Night Live where (the real) Jerry Lewis was supposedly in France, watching his part in The King of Comedy, a part Lewis played "straight," being dubbed by a French actor who was using Lewis' typically over-the-top goofy-sounding comedy voice for the voice-over. Pretty funny.

  12. I just remembered that I have the Chinese series "Empresses in the Palace" in my Amazon watchlist. I've only seen the first episode, but I got confused cause all the young women looked the same to me. Obviously, I am reading the subtitles.

  13. I barely watch movies that weren't originally in English. Although, my roommate just finished a Spanish soap that she was enjoying. Way over the top.

  14. That is a tough category. Years ago, when were still in the courting stage, I watched a bit of a Spanish TV soap opera because the Husband was into it even though he didn't understand what was going on.

  15. The only foreign show I watched was the original Iron Chef.

  16. Now you know how I feel every time I visit on Thursday. Like it's a foreign language! I remember watching a Korean series on Hulu back when it was free. It was a great show with subtitles I could easily follow. At least you tried and that's what is important! Have a super week and welcome home.

  18. I hail from England and I have some of the same problems as Denise, being unable to understand some of the heavy accents. Once I used to imitate them now I don't understand them, so I think that could be a valid fill in for a foreign language.

  19. Yeah, I didn't have anything, either.

  20. When we lived in Latin America there were wonderful novellas on Netflix, extremely well-written stories with great acting, too. They were in Spanish with Spanish subtitles, which I found a really fun way to practice Spanish and improve my fluency.

  23. I was on a German ship coming to the US one year, and I remember seeing a John Wayne flick. I've never quite recovered from John leveling a gun and saying something like "Put your hands up" in German or from the German-speaking Indians.

  24. Hi, Birgit! The BH was funny. I've sometimes seen non-English news shows while traveling, and it's always interesting to try and figure out what the anchors are talking about. My favorite non-English movie is the 1991 "Raise the Red Lantern." It was Chinese and visually stunning. The story was chilling, especially if you are a woman. I will never forget it. Have a good one!

  27. I always liked Hoss Cartwright and thought he was a tough cookie. Speaking German, you don't dare mess with him.

    Keep a smile, Birgit.
