Valentine's Day

I ....can't think of anything snarky because I am thinking about my mom whom I loved deeply and miss her since her passing January 15th. When I was young, I remember coming for dinner, my mom had lit candles and, on each of our plates, was a heart shaped box filled with chocolates. She made a special meal for all of us to enjoy. She did this most years and it always filled me warmth, love...and chocolate. This Valentine's Day is for my mom and I am filled with love today as corny as that sounds.  Back in September, my cousin Dieter, came for a visit to see his Tante Fiti (Say as Feetee). I asked her what she used to sing to her nephew and she started to sing. Here it is and I hope it is not upside down...

at her funeral, We played 2 songs that we thought my mom would love to have for her day. One is done by Andre Rieu whom she called "her boyfriend". The other song was at the end of the ceremony-The Battle Hymn of the Republic was very close to her heart and it is sung by John McDermott whom we saw in concert and loved him as well. If you care to listen...here are the 2..

I Dreamed a Dream

So this is the whole CD I bought and we decided on track 5 so just scroll through until you get to the right one....about 22 min. into it. She loved this guy and he is excellent...we saw him twice

The second song, The Battle Hymn of the Republic, we asked everyone to stay and listen as this song was very close to our mom's heart.

So, to everyone, Happy Valentine's Day...hope it is wonderful no matter what.

  1. I couldn't get it to play, but I'm glad you recorded it. Just hold those special Valentines memories dear.

  2. "Battle Hymn of the Republic" is just tremendous. Your Mom had good taste.

I think the romantic aspect of Valentine's Day is overplayed. There are so many different kinds of love, and why limit the celebration to just the one kind? And to just one day?

  4. The first few holidays after a loss like yours are so difficult. It was that way with my mom's passing. The first Christmas (five days after she died), the first Mother's Day, her birthday, etc.

My thoughts are with you, Birgit.

  5. Your mom would've loved the service you gave her. That's the way to go. Over the Rainbow was the Mama's favorite, so I asked for it to be played. We walked her coffin out of the church to Joy, Joy, Joy. Big corny mushy hugs to you, Birgit.

  6. Keeping such memories close is the way to be as you think about her today and remember the great times with each holiday.

  7. Dear Birgit,

I am returning to blogging at the end of this week after a month absence. I selected your site for my first stop as I make the rounds and slowly get back into the swing. It is very sweet of you to share your mother's favorite music with us and to remember her this Valentine's Day. This is a lovely post. You are a fine daughter.

Take good care of yourself, dear friend BB.

  8. Hi Birgit - I too sadly couldn't get it to play ... but can see them both. Love the Republic Battle Hymn ... so glad you feel at peace ... and your mother went with songs she loved. All the best - and with thoughts - Hilary

  11. Thank you for your recent comment, Birgit. I have just gone back to January 15th to catch up with you. I'm sorry I didn't know about your beloved Mom and I send you my belated sympathies. How blessed you were to have her as your Mom until her dementia and then how blessed she was to have you afterwards when you became the parent. So many folks never know a mother's love, so treasure those memories and hold them close to help you through the terrible grief. Well, "through" is not an appropriate word, as one never does get "through" it, but certainly it will help on those very blue days.

I was wondering if you would mind adding a "Follow By Email" (or is it subscribe by email?) gadget to your sidebar? I have such a long blog roll now that I just cannot keep up that way any longer. When I subscribe to a blog via the "follow by email" button where you fill in your email address, all that blog's posts will arrive in my inbox when they are published (or within a coupla days). That doesn't guarantee I will comment on all of them, but at least I see them that way! Plus, yes, okay, I'm slowing waaaaay down!! Sending lots of hugs, Darnell

ps Please email me if you do add it so then I can come over and put my email in. Thank you! darnell dot knauss at gee mail dot com.

  15. I'm sure this was a difficult day for you, but you have some lovely memories. Speaking as a Mom, I can tell you this: she would want you to remember all the happy memories she provided for you, and let closure come into your heart. As long as you remember all the love she surrounded you with, she will still be there with you...forever! Take care, and TFS a lovely tribute to your sweet Mom.
