Skipping Thursday Movie Picks-Have Nuttin!

Over at Wandering Through The Shelves, they have the TV Edition and one is to pick 3 shows that are non-English. hence my look above..OK that really is not me but the same expression was on my face.  I think I popped a few brain cells to boot and I need to keep them since I drowned quite a few in my drinking youth days.

I decided to talk about a film...yup one since I do watch many in a month I knew I could give my 2 cents worth. So the film I chose is....

THE GREATEST SHOWMAN-2017

STARS-Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams, Zac Efron, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Keala Settle, Sam Humphrey.
Director-Michael Gracey
Writers-Jenny Bicks, Bill Condon
Oscar Nomination-Best Song-"This is Me" by Benj Pasek & Justin Paul

This is about the life of P.T. Barnum of "Never give a sucker an even break" fame. We see him as a small boy to a down on his luck, every man loved by a woman who gave up her fortune to be with him and have a few kids to boot. Poor, but with a vision, he starts a museum about weird oddities with little success until he brings in real life oddities or, as they were called in the day, Freaks starting with Tom Thumb and the Bearded Lady. Before he knows it, he is rolling in the mulah but he is still considered low brow so he fetches the beautiful, talented opera singer from Europe, Jenny Lind to appeal to the cultured but losing sight of his family-both his wife and kids and his family of "oddities".

This is an excellent film and should have been up for Best Picture instead of Shape of Water which won and Dunkirk(blecchhh-I'll get heat for that:)) because it has more depth than those 2 films and it is better directed. The music is stellar which is why I have no idea why it was not nominated for best Score, plus Art Direction and Costumes. Shape of Water was nominated in both areas and I just don't get it. So what if "Shape of Water" was filmed and shown in greens and has a under water, icky look. This film is much better in both areas. The singing is superb but I will say that the director and cameraman should learn from what Fred Astaire insisted on...to film the musical number in full length. It is always distracting to get into a dance number only for the camera angle to change to a close up of their feet or face or just another angle. Please keep the shot where it should be. I know Arlee Bird loves this film which made me finally watch it and I am glad I did. If you care to listen I have the song, "This Is Me" that I think, should have won the Oscar up against "Remember Me" from Coco that did win. You choose which song should have won and before you listen, do you recall either because I can remember the song from The Greatest Stuntman but can't remember the song...hahahaaa.."Remember Me"... I don't! Take a listen...

now the Oscar winner...

Unless you dislike musicals (Shady), I recommend this film and Hugh is always nice on the eyes.

  1. Hi, Birgit!

Thanks for the shout out, dear friend! To be completely accurate, I DO like musicals with singing zombies. :)

Mrs. Shady and I have been wanting to watch The Greatest Showman for some time now, and your review seals the deal. Regarding cutaways in musical numbers, I tend to agree that in the modern, post-MTV era, directors have been reluctant to let a performance unfold without multiple edits and camera angles because they fear audiences will get bored. The circus fascinates Mrs. S and me I we have visited many times the nearby John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota which includes a Circus Museum.

Enjoy the rest of your week and weekend, dear friend BB!

    1. That type of museum always intrigues me and the Ripley one in Niagara Falls is better than one thinks. You are right about trying to keep the kids’ attention but what a shame

  2. I'm not much into musicals although at some point my wife will want to watch it just for Hugh Jackman.
I do think the song from Coco was worthy of a win though.
Foreign television shows - the only current one I can think of that I've watched is Dark, a German series.

    1. Someone chose Dark but I haven’t even heard of it. I enjoyed this movie and thinkmthe song was better than Coco

  3. This was a hard week for TMP. I stand by that Rewrite The Stars is a better song than This Is Me from The Greatest Showman. I wish it would've been Oscar nominated.

  5. I grew up in Stratford, Connecticut, which is the town next to Bridgeport. Bridgeport pays quite a bit of homage to PT Barnum and holds an annual "Barnum Festival" which includes a circus (at least they used to...I hope they still do...I'm in Pennsylvania now, you know). Quite a local [dead] celebrity.

    1. A lot of the celebrities are dead ones. Political correctness is so huge today that Barnum would never make it...he would be on reality tv

Didn't see The Greatest Showman but love Hugh Jackman. Did you see Eddie the Eagle? If not, highly recommend it.

  7. When I was in high school, I did a biographical report on PT Barnum. And I still haven't seen this movie. It is on my DVR however. It's been sitting there for months. Eventually I'll get to watching this.

  8. I've not seen this film, although I do like Hugh Jackman, such a gorgeous looking man. Not all that keen on musicals, love the old Roger and Hammerstein ones of decades ago.
I have seen Dunkirk, and as a film, I much preferred the original one. Kate x

  9. Closest I can come to non-English TV shows is Jane the Virgin when her grandmother speaks Spanish. I have to make sure I am watching the screen so I can read the subtitles.

  10. No clue for this one either. But I did just recently watch the Greatest Showman and it was very good indeed.

  11. I loved Coco but I can't say the Greatest Showman was one of my favorites. But I do agree, Hugh J is always worth looking at. But we all have our own tastes which is a good thing. Happy almost Friday. hugs-Erika

  13. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Glad to hear someone whose opinion about this film matches mine. I know there are many of us who feel this way, but I'm floored by those who are so vociferously against this film. I've read some of their reasoning and I find them to be absurd.

I refuse to watch Shape of Water, but I did enjoy Dunkirk and Coco. However neither of these films uplifted me like Greatest Showman and rarely will I repeatedly watch a film like I did the Barnum inspired musical.

Now I'll have to go back through your comments to hear some other thoughts on the film.

Glad you saw the film, enjoyed it, and shared your review on your blog.

  14. Heavens, Birgit. I've only HEARD of Greatest Showman, but never even saw the trailer until now. I wanted to see Dunkirk, but it hasn't made it to TV yet.

One of the reasons I was so enamored with Law and Order was the long single takes they used. Some of them were as much as two minutes without cutting to a different shot. The directors knew how to get the most out of a scene with a single take, that's for sure.

  18. Birgit,

I've heard great things about this film and it certainly was a spring board for super song, This Is Me. I'd like to see the movie but I sorta fell out of love with mewsicals and really have to be in the right mindset. That being said, if it ever shows on Netflix I will give it a try. :)

I hope y'all will find time to check out my Little Mermaid Art Sketch series beginning with ARIEL on Curious as a Cathy!!

  20. If the topic had been movies that were non-English, it would be a lot easier.

  21. I'd have trouble dredging up three non-English tv shows too.
I used to love old Hollywood musicals, but I stopped watching them when I married a 'musical-hater'. Unless I spot this on a film list when I'm flying, I doubt if I'll ever see it.

  22. Hey Birgit.
I haven't seen your P.T. Barnum movie "The Greatest Showman." I have watched "The Shape of water." but wasn't impressed. Not quite sure why this movie won the Oscars award, didn't seem very good to me.
Yes I do watch Musicals but mostly on stage live. My son sings in stage productions at the Arts-cape Theater.
    Blessings my friend, Geoff.
